Wellies for Big Calves

soupforbrains · 03/04/2018 16:21

Please help me,

I really need some wellies and have been trying to buy some since October but everywhere I've looked has either been out of stock in my size (5) or not had any I could get my legs into. I'm starting to go a bit insane.

I have VERY muscular calves and so struggle to get wellies on most of the time, but I really need some. I prefer not to buy online as I can't try them on but if someone could tell me a brand which caters for super-massive-calves then I would maybe give it a go.

any suggestions?

p.s. I can't afford Hunters.

Simply Be have boots and wellies in multiple calf widths so even though there online you should get a good idea if they will fit before ordering. Simply be are a subsidiary of JD Williams so there's also Viva LA Diva, Crazy Clearance, Fashion world etc etc who will all have slightly different designs or sizes available so it's worth checking all of their sites. Evans do larger calf widths too if you want to stay on the high street and even though we're coming out of usual wellie season because of festivals there should be new stock for summer. Good luck finding some xx

Wellies for Big Calves

Soup I've just measured round the top of one of the Dunlops and they are 16.5 inches, BUT they don't come up to the widest part of my calves, which are the same size as yours (left calf) and bigger than yours due to swelling (right calf). I find when I put them on I am able to tuck the bottoms of my trousers into them if needed. HTH.

My Jileon ones are full-length and can fit up to 53 cm calf, which is nearly 21 inches. They have a gusset with a strap and clip on each side, but the clips on the inner side do tend to knock against each other when walking, making the clips come undone - I may resort to Gaffa tape.

Missingthesea · 03/04/2018 21:16

Forgot to say the Dunlops are taller at the front than the back. they are 11 inches tall at the front and 10 inches at the back.

HeyMicky · 03/04/2018 21:19

Another vote for Ilse Jacobson. They lace up to accommodate my giant calves and are very comfy to wear, too

Shadow01 · 03/04/2018 21:40

Mountain Warehouse do wider leg wellies.

soupforbrains · 03/04/2018 22:11

Thank you everyone and especially @Missingthesea

I will look first at Jileon and then at some other options.

Dunlop all the way

Jon66 · 03/04/2018 23:16

I have the same problem and wear Ariats. They are expensive but have lasted for years and I ride and muck out in them. I also have a pair of Dubarry country boots which are waterproof and I just hose the muck off. More stylish.

MmeButtox · 04/04/2018 00:53

The only part of me that's athletic is my calves a d I'm short so the muscular bit is way too low for a normal welly. I bought short Hunters and was so comfy. Maybe look for a sale? To me they were worth it.

bluebells1 · 04/04/2018 07:31

Muckboots are the only ones that fit comfortably around my ginormous calves

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 04/04/2018 07:43

I had Jileon ones once and the quality was crap. They disintegrated in the garage over the winter.

I now have 3/4 length lace up hunters and they are great. Have lasted 10 years. If you can find some in the sale somewhere that's what I would do.

wibblywobblyfish · 04/04/2018 07:53

I have jileon wellies as I have enormous calfs. I also have the Dunlop half calf ones too.

The heels on the jileon wellies are hollow and it's very spongy and noticeable when you are walking on pavement. Not so bad when you get onto softer ground. Also the clips catch against each other and ping open when you are walking.

Dunlop ones aren't a great fit on me and they get all bunched at the top as they reach my calves. For £8 I'm not too upset though

Missingthesea · 04/04/2018 21:28

Goodness wibblywobblyfish, I didn't know the Jileon heels were hollow! I've only worn them in the garden so far.

OP i can't remember if you said you'd already looked there but i also came across the Wide welly Shop.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 04/04/2018 23:25

Dickies. Cheap and cheerful and slightly shorter so room for wider calves.

wonderwoman1981 · 05/04/2018 10:56

I have big calves and my hunter wellies are adjustable at the top - so they fit any width.

soupforbrains · 06/04/2018 15:36

OK, so,

Joules are out of stock of size 5 in all their styles

Dickies don't come up quite wide enough, (I've just had a long exchange with their sales team who have kindly been measuring wellies for me) I'm sad because I thought they looked like they would meet my budget requirements too.

I can't afford Hunters, and the ones I've tried in the past weren't wide enough anyway. even Jileon or Wide Welly co would really be stretching my budget to be honest.

I'm off to check Dunlop now, any other suggestions I've missed?

Dunlop and Decathlon both have products listed online which look ok and are within my price range but neither lists any measurements for the boots beyond height. Can anyone give me any clues re-models?

OP posts:
SluttyButty · 06/04/2018 16:03

Some of the Decathlon ones are quite a generous size round the calf.

SluttyButty · 06/04/2018 16:04

I can measure my Decathlon ones and tell you the name, two ticks.

SluttyButty · 06/04/2018 16:11

Ive got the solognac reinforced 500 wellies and roughly on the inside top of the calf is 16 &1/4".

stoplickingthetelly · 06/04/2018 16:26

You need Jillion wellies. They're fab and come in a variety of width fittings.

eggncress · 06/04/2018 16:31

I have this problem too. I got my wellies from an animal feed/ agricultural supplies store where I could try them on. Quite non- descript, green and unfancy but they are super comfy and keep my feet dry. They also come up to just under the knee. Not sure of the brand name.

eggncress · 06/04/2018 16:32

I think they are men’s but I wasn’t concerned about that.

soupforbrains · 06/04/2018 16:53

@eggncress what size shoe do you take?

I've looked at a few unisex/mens types which would do the trick calf wise but they all started at size 7....

Thank you @SluttyButty that's really helpful, is the top of the boot the widest part? my calves are 18 inches around so unless thy are wider lower down but taper at the top I don't think they're a go-er, they were the ones I was looking at online though so REALLY helpful advice thank you!

eggncress · 09/04/2018 13:52

@soupforbrains I’m size 6 shoe size but usually get 7 in wellies meaning I can wear snuggly thick socks Smile
