Do people really notice fingernails?

I’ll admit it, I’m lazy as fuck about my nails. They’re clean and trimmed and sometimes buffed, but that’s about it.

Manicures here are expensive, and I’m rough on my hands so they don’t last anyway. That’s my excuse for not bothering!

I can honestly say I barely notice people’s fingernails. Is it just me, and most people are noticing that I don’t make the effort? Blush

I notice other people's nails

I love short but strong nails in a nice colour...

Sadly mine are tiny, uneven and split and rip like paper....

I give myself a quick mani every week, but I just despair at their hopelessness.

I can never open a can with them, for example. I need to ask someone to open a drinks can for me, do it myself and rip off half my nail.... or use a knife.Confused

Nail Envy (aptly named!) helps a bit

Anyway, I do notice people's nails. Everyone has nicer nails than me...

men LOVE longer painted nails. Obvious reasons

I notice nails. I bite mine terribly and I always notice other nail biters. I also notice gorgeous nails. That said, think PPs are right - the extremes get noticed, but the normal get forgotten - my neighbour was over for coffee today and I'm racking my brains to think what her nails were like but just can't remember. Guessing clean and tidy but unremarkable?

windchimesabotage · 05/04/2018 00:25

I bite mine..... never had a manicure in my life. Never done anything to them except paint them a bright colour now and then for fun. They are in terrible condition but clean.
I have noticed that most other women do a lot with their nails but personally I think as long as someones nails are clean it doesnt matter.

The only thing that does get to me is long nails on men that dont appear deliberate.... for some reason it makes me really shudder. (doesnt make me shudder if its part of a specific look iyswim like they have painted nails and/or embracing that sort of thing on purpose)

mathanxiety · 05/04/2018 06:17

I only notice severely bitten nails, and yy to long nails on men..

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 05/04/2018 06:26

I only really notice either really manky nails or fancy ones. Mine don’t grow well so I keep them quite short and low maintenance, usually just a bit of clear polish. I hate the feeling of false nails so I don’t do it.

goose1964 · 05/04/2018 06:53

I only notice them if they're wrong. So if they are ragged, not looking at mine😂 or if they are ridiculously long or a funny shape.

Fairylea · 05/04/2018 07:30

I notice the extremely bad or the extremely long. Anything in between I don’t notice at all. More than anything I can’t stand dirty fingernails.

Gingefringe · 05/04/2018 08:32

I always notice fingernails - probably because I look after mine.
Short nails either in strong colours or pale look good.
I hate those long false talons in coffin shapes.

I keep mine fairly short and coat with OPI Nail Envy in clear or slightly tinted - since I started using this they've been really strong and hardly split. It's fairly expensive but you can sometimes pick up a bargain on eBay.

BusterGonad · 05/04/2018 08:40

I always notice fingernails, I'm sorry to say but I hate short bitten ragged nails. I think they look disgusting and are so unhygienic. I'm not keen on big false things either but at least they are not constantly in the owners mouth being chewed!

GrannyGrissle · 05/04/2018 08:44

I would notice overdone 'nail art', fashion 'shapes' of nails and long thick looking talons much more than bitten/raggy looking ones. I always think of the latter as complete germ factories and i tend to view their owners' as grot bags in disguise to be honest. Grin

A lot of 6th form have ridiculously long nails. I notice, cos I wonder how the hell they're going to be able to write for 3 hours at speed!

funmummy48 · 05/04/2018 08:54

I only notice nails if they're dirty, ragged or have chipped nail varnish. I work with a lovely group of ladies and am in the minority in that I don't get my nails "done" regularly. It doesn't bother me as it's not something that's important to me. I paint them myself for a special night out or if I'm on holiday. I think it's a bit like the eyebrow thing....you're either into it or you're not. (That doesn't mean that I'm an un-stylish, sack wearing frump though. Just so you know....)
