Do people really notice fingernails?

I’ll admit it, I’m lazy as fuck about my nails. They’re clean and trimmed and sometimes buffed, but that’s about it.

Manicures here are expensive, and I’m rough on my hands so they don’t last anyway. That’s my excuse for not bothering!

I can honestly say I barely notice people’s fingernails. Is it just me, and most people are noticing that I don’t make the effort? Blush

I tend to because I always have mine done. always have long coffin shaped acrylics with colours/ glitter/ designs on, I go for something different every time. Do I care if other people think they're awful or tacky? No.

akitas2 · 03/04/2018 20:44

I notice dirty nails or chipped polish, also if someone has had a lovely manicure. Or if their gel/shellac is growing out. Doesn't bother me though, I just notice these things. Unkempt/dirty/long toenails though - unless said person has a medical reason for neglecting them - then they should have their shoes welded to their feet! Just in case they come off and I can see them! Filth! 🤣

agentdaisy · 03/04/2018 20:51

Like pp I tend to notice nails if they're at either extreme. Nicely manicured nails with colour catch my eye because I like how it looks.

Filthy, ragged, bitten nails look awful, chipped or messy coloured polish and overly long nails don't look great either.

Clean, filed/trimmed nails I wouldn't overly notice and on the occasion I do they look fine and imo don't make you look any less 'groomed'.

I have mid length nails and swing between having clear polish and coloured polish depending on where I'm going and how much time I have. Clear polish is much quicker to apply than coloured as you slightly imperfect clear polish isn't noticeable.

agentdaisy · 03/04/2018 20:54

I have to agree re toenails. I absolutely hate the warmer months when the sandals and flip flops come out, along with seeing the grubby feet and manky nails that are suddenly on show. Makes me cringe 🤢

DairyisClosed · 03/04/2018 20:57

Only if the are dirty, fake or, painted some horrible colour/pattern.

Caroline680 · 03/04/2018 20:57

men LOVE longer painted nails. Obvious reasons

CallarMorvern · 03/04/2018 20:57

Yes, but like others have said, only in the extremes. Horribly dirty, nicotine stained or super long ( I always wonder how people manage normal life with talons).
Have also noticed how many (US) TV actresses have very short natural coloured nails when working.

DairyisClosed · 03/04/2018 20:58

Oh and the word 'groomed' makes me think of horses or show dogs. Never listen to someone who tells you that you need to look more 'groomed'.

Not convinced, they make my OH and my Dad cringe!

LiteraryDevil · 03/04/2018 21:01

My ex had disgusting long toe nails and couldn't understand my problem with them. I'd dread his feet coming over to my side of the bed at night (my stbexh once cut my leg with his ragged long toe nail and I'm now very wary). One time I asked him if I could cut them as they were making me feel twitchy and he agreed. The smell from the gunk under them was revolting. Bizarrely his fingernails were bitten to the quick and he'd chewed off half the skin on his fingertips too.

DuchessMinnie · 03/04/2018 21:04

I have never had a manicure or false nails. Actually I work in hospitals so short and clean is essential so anything else would be a waste. I think low maintenance is fine but I am biased.

MrsMarigold · 03/04/2018 21:16

I think the word groomed is misleading, how can you give them a good scrub with a nail brush if you are worried about chipping your manicure? Yuck! I'd rather be clean, I just try to keep them all the same length.

Also I'm obsessed with feet, the number of women with "glam" toenails but unhealthy feet grosses me out, mine get scrubbed, pumiced and moisturized daily. I rarely paint them but go barefoot at every opportunity.

MamaMilkMachine · 03/04/2018 21:27

People do notice....some people do anyway. I insisted on painting my fingernails and toenails before my due date so they would be done for hospital. My OH was all like 'do you really think when your in labour anyone is going to notice your nails' half way through contractions the midwife said oooh your nails look lovely Grin

Vitalogy · 03/04/2018 21:35

I take notice of a man's nails, I like them very short and clean. The shortness is the main thing though, ingrained dirt due to manual work, I wouldn't hold that against them if that was the case though. Freaks me out a bit a man with long nails.

Thistlebelle · 03/04/2018 21:50

I have to say Caroline my DH doesn’t like very long nails either.

LemonysSnicket · 03/04/2018 21:51

I’m a biter and nobody ever notices really. If chipped paint or dirty ragged nails are gross and noticeable. Anything else is fine.

halfwitpicker · 03/04/2018 22:13

Yes people notice.

happymummy12345 · 04/04/2018 09:11

For everyone that's said how do people manage with long nails? It's really easy once you're used to it

Springnowplease · 04/04/2018 09:50

I've had long nails since my teens. I manage fine. I grow my own because I don't like fakes. They look naff.

SukiTheDog · 04/04/2018 17:28

I keep mine short (and therefore mostly, clean) and have been known to do a bit of clear polish. It’s rare, though.

On others, I notice nicely painted nails but know I’d never have the patience for the upkeep. I don’t know how people can spend hours in those fumed filled false nail salons though. Can’t be good for the employees working in them, either.

Thistlebelle · 04/04/2018 18:04

Really Happy?

I find as soon as my fingernails get a little bit longer than usual they are a complete pain in the neck.

I occasionally have to file them down to get my contacts out safely! Grin

Eolian · 04/04/2018 18:17

It is not 'lazy as fuck' to have normal, unadorned nails! The only nails I notice are those weird, bulbous-looking gel ones. Short, blunt, painted nails look nice imo, but they're hardly an everyday essential. Mine chip within a day or two on the very rare occasion I do them.

Cellardoor23 · 04/04/2018 20:04

I don't notice. Unless they're dirty, e.g. dirt underneath the finger nails or nicotine stains, chipped etc.

rightknockered · 04/04/2018 21:54

I keep mine short, sometimes painted, sometimes not. I'm amazed at how people manage with long nails, I find them very impractical, but suppose its what you're used to.

rightknockered · 04/04/2018 21:54

I do notice other people's nails, men and women.
