OK have taken the plunge and ordered link{http://www.kew-online.com/kewwebshop/shopdetail.aspx?season=0701&sty_num=6019&sty_qual=111\this dress}
Now is it going to make me look like a dwarf in a nightie? Am 43, 5'5", size 12 with big norks.
I so want a maxi dress this summer but don't want to be a laughing stock. Oh and would you wear one of these just out and about on school run and stuff or would it look over the top? Having a style crisis here as you can maybe tell?

purplemonkeydishwasher · 08/05/2007 11:20

which one?

puddle · 08/05/2007 11:24

I'm not sure height is an issue it's more your shape.

You need to balance out the amount of swishy fabric on the bottom with a more fitted, strappy and flesh revealing top half. So good for people with toned upper bodies and arms, and pear shapes!

RosaLuxembourg · 08/05/2007 11:25

OH FGS lost the ability to do links now this dress

Well my upper arms are getting more toned as my aerobic class has a scary upper body routine with weights that seems to be making a difference. Am hourglass shape (big bum, big norks) - and don't like my legs much but like my waist and norks.

It's a lovely dress and I think you can get away with wearing it during the day - though whenever I hear the term "maxi dress" I think of my mum in the 70s going to "dinner dances" and "chicken suppers"

Enid · 08/05/2007 11:41

hmmm

I have been quite intrigued by maxi dresses

but I was at a christening on sunday and an old friend of mine was wearing one

she is 5 10, size 12, always looks fabby

she looked bizarre (and quite fat)

cardy · 08/05/2007 11:48

I like it and was wondering about a maxi dress myself. I have the same issie as you - when would I wear it, on holiday? going out for lunch on a warm sunny day...these things don't happen that often. A waste of money?

puddle · 08/05/2007 11:50

You sound a good shape for them Rosa. Small waist good.

I would look like a galleon.

KTeePee · 08/05/2007 11:51

I actually have a maxi dress which I bought several years ago (obviously a trend-setter, me ) but it's still hanging in my wardrobe with the labels on.... that's partly because it is quite figure hugging and although I am not fat I, 3 children have taken their toll... but also lack of opportunities to wear it - mine is definitely only for evening wear.

Gobbledigook · 08/05/2007 11:53

OMG, I LOVE that dress. Oh god, it's £54 - help!! LOVE IT!

I'd wear it to go out actually.

cardy · 08/05/2007 12:01

Just looked at the Tipshop websire, not much there. I say get this one RL

RosaLuxembourg · 08/05/2007 12:49

I had a good look around before finding this one and the problem is most summer dresses in general have spaghetti straps which are useless for those of us who need to wear substantial bras. My 34DD norks need a lot of help to stay hoisted above waist level these days.

I really like this maxi dress and i think that it looks great becuase it has slightly thicker straps and slightly more difinition around the midriff area which is essential with your hour glass figure.
Am personally debating maxi dress at present, and think i would buy this one if i did go for it
it also doesn't look too ott

DarrellRivers · 08/05/2007 12:52

sorry re bad bad spelling

SoupDragon · 08/05/2007 12:54

Please explain to me exactly what a Maxi Dress is.

DarrellRivers · 08/05/2007 12:55

long dress down to ground but for everyday wear rather than nightime
usually spaghetti straps and fitted to bust but loose from bust line (so might look a little like tent on short people)
think margo leadbetter

SoupDragon · 08/05/2007 13:11

"think margo leadbetter"

I'd rather not!

Ta.

princessmel · 08/05/2007 13:13

If I wore that dress I'd feel to dressed up to go to school etc. I like it though. I've not got a maxi dress. I don't think I 'do' long dresses/skirts.

DarrellRivers · 08/05/2007 13:50

margo is my style guru

RosaLuxembourg · 08/05/2007 14:13

I wore a Boden rose print fifties-style dress and pale pink cardi on the school run on Friday. DD2 asked me why I was wearing such a nice dress just to pick her up from school! But I now believe that you might as well wear the nice stuff all the time and not leave it hanging in the wardrobe.
