Does anyone else have too many coats?

I've done it again - popped into a charity shop in my lunch hour and come out with a beautiful slouchy dark grey harris tweed jacket. It is absolutely gorgeous and a bargain at £25 but I don't need another coat! I can resist any other form of clothing - bags and shoes leave me cold - but when I see a lovely coat that fits and is a bargain then I simply have to have it. Please tell me I'm not alone in my coat obsession.

I too have many coats.

I have two long down coats (one Uniqlo, one Berghaus), a short packable Craghoppers puffer, a Seasalt long waterproof, a Uniqlo Blocktech parka, a long burgundy wool blend smart coat (New Look), a Sainsbury's khaki military style smart coat, a faux shearing Lakeland jacket, a Jack Wolfskin waterproof, a Berghaus packable waterproof, a La Redoute leather jacket and a fabric kneelength coat from H&M. Some of these are quite, quite old. I also have a Nike stormfit coat which I adore but am too fat to get in now.

I have recently donated or recycled a few other coats too.

Is there a Coataholics Anonymous? I might need to join it.

Floisme · 08/02/2018 18:55

The last time I counted, I gave up at 17. I've bought at least one more since then. That's coats - I've no idea how many jackets. They're nearly all second hand or vintage so I feel no guilt whatsoever. I love how you can be wearing some old piece of crap, stick one on top top and you're done. My Harris tweed overcoat (also a charity shop find) is fabulous - stylish, toasty and surprisingly rain repellent. They used to climb Everest in them.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 08/02/2018 19:23

Lots of coats, jackets, bags, shoes and boots here. As a pp said I could have all of the above for years and years so they're all mini investments (she lies to make herself feel better).

peanutbutter310 · 08/02/2018 19:30

I have a full double wardrobe crammed full of coats, can't face an actual count as then I'd have to stop adding to them! I do buy 'investment' coats though, so the collection has built gradually over many years.

Blondielongie · 08/02/2018 20:50

What? You can't have too many coats OP. Come on!!

I want a big slouchy wool one with dropped shoulders in navy next.

SoFancy · 08/02/2018 22:15

Yes. And I don’t live any of them. Finding The Perfect Coat is my holy grail. Instead, I have about 25 ‘just alrght’ Coats and probably only regularly wear 4 or 5 of them.

It’s a problem!

SoFancy · 08/02/2018 22:15

Live = love

Strongbeatsskinny · 08/02/2018 22:17

I’ve not a clue how many coats I actually own. It’s a lot can’t resist a nice coat most are sale bargains all worn don’t think any still have tags on.

HuckfromScandal · 08/02/2018 22:25

9!!!,
Ffs, that’s not even enough to call a collection 😂😂😂
I have a whole wardrobe dedicated to coats.
One for every occasion.
I would say at least 20.
But most of them are classical, and I have been the same size since I was 19, so some of them are very very old.

NC4Now · 08/02/2018 22:34

I simultaneously have too many and not enough coats.

It's one of life's greatest conundrums...

ScreamingValenta · 08/02/2018 22:39

Yes! I gave 10 to charity last year, but still seem to have about 20 left. That's not even counting leather jackets Sad. Some of them are more than 20 years old, though, and only intermittently fit me.

applesandpears33 · 08/02/2018 22:52

14 coats I think. I may have missed one or two out. I've also got an embarrassing number of tweed jackets - about 11 I think. They are all lovely but it is too many as we don't have enough space to store them in our small house. I'm going to try and force myself to wear out some of the coats and jackets I've got before buying any more. I can see that I'll wear out a winter coat by April but it could take a lot longer to wear out any of the tweed jackets.

JaceLancs · 08/02/2018 23:23

I love a coat - if you include non suit type jackets such as biker style I probably have at least 30 - some are older than my oldest child (26)
I have 4 identical wool raglan sleeve 3/4 length coats from jaeger in different colours
3 furs, various padded casual coats, 3 leather jackets, tweed, velvet, suede

JaceLancs · 08/02/2018 23:23

I sold a lot on eBay due to dieting or it would have been 50+

disneydatknee · 08/02/2018 23:45

DH always moans that I have too many coats. I have a rain coat. A warm puffy coat. A stylish, long coat that I only wear when not casually dressed. A light jacket/coat for spring. A leather jacket that I love but am not confident enough to wear with anything I own as it’s too stylish to go with anything else I own. And several others. I would agree that I have too many coats. But coats are always a good investment! I’m not a shoes or bags kind of gal. Coats are good. English weather means we need one for every occasion.

bingohandjob · 09/02/2018 05:50

Yep, I've got about a dozen for every variation of weather but as I walk everywhere I'm pretty happy with my collection! I've also built them up over the years and have got the best I could so they'll last ages,I reckon ie proper waterproof, really warm, lightweight but proper waterproof for spring/summer showers etc.

twoseven · 09/02/2018 06:14

Diamonddealeroncemore · 09/02/2018 14:29

I’m another coataholic. Mostly because I’m too fat for half of them but they were expensive or they’re gorgeous (or both!) so I won’t get rid of them. And a lot are ‘going out’ coats and jackets so I don’t get to wear them often.

leedy · 09/02/2018 16:02

Greetings my fellow coataholics!

My litany of shame/pride:

  • Olive green warm quilted parka
  • Black smart raincoat
  • Grey less smart more parka-ish raincoat
  • Green lighter more parka-ish raincoat
  • Olive green rain jacket
  • Very light packable beige rain mac
  • Lurid green rain jacket for hiking, possibly visible from space
  • Navy down puffy coat that makes me look like the Michelin man but I love because is super toasty
  • Navy tweed wool cocoon coat
  • Green tweed coat
  • Cream fake fur jacket
  • Grey wool pea coat
  • Olive moleskin pea coat
  • Green wool tailored coat
  • Pink wool tailored coat
  • Denim jacket
  • Other denim jacket
  • Green short jacket
  • Grey leather biker jacket
  • Black leather jacket
  • Green leather jacket

I now realize that I am not just a coataholic, I am a green coataholic.

leedy · 09/02/2018 16:07

I'm not even going there with cross-body bags.

LuxuryMilk · 09/02/2018 16:11

Fuck knows how many I’ve got. My sister buys clothes all the time, then gets bored and offloads them on to me.
I honestly must have at least 15 Blush
