🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Happy Snail Year, Bring Spoons!

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

JANUARY 2018: Thread 11! Shock we're getting old. A recap of The Snailies categories for those still meaning to get round to them:

🐌🐌 THE SNAILIES 2017 🐌🐌

Wink The Well Hello There - newest and latest find that gets your motor running

Angry The Flusher- money spent on this product would have been better put to use by flushing it down the toilet

Halo The Jack & Rose- the product you’ll never let go of because there’s plenty of fucking space for the two of you on that piece of wood. Damn you, James Cameron, for breaking my poor little tween heart.

Biscuit The LTB- it all seemed so promising, everything was going so great, then they turned out to be a narcissist gaslighting bastard

Envy The Child Prodigy- that one product that’s annoyingly good and isn’t afraid to be smug about it

Smile The Worker Bee- never the centre of attention but has been steadily chugging along like no other

Hmm The Troll- the one where you repeatedly asked, ‘Is this doing anything?’, but continued to use it anyway…

Confused The Flabbergaster- that one product or technique that wasn’t really supposed to be used like that or delivered well beyond your non-existent expectations

Blush The Sinner- oh, admit it because we’re all guilty of it, what did you do or use that wasn’t all that sensible like take an acid bath and had the disastrous results you really knew to expect

Bo glad to hear you probably would have recommended the cc cream too, I like having your approval 😊.
I'm getting on very well with the bha so far, I'm using it every 3rd night and have had no problems, in fact I'm enjoying everything in my routine at the moment and my skin seems happy with the products.

Tsmummy08 · 04/02/2018 20:51

Need to catch up but wanted to answer JDSTER - At the moment I'm using the Retirides (Spanish Retin-A) 1%, just moved up from the 0.5%

userallusedup · 04/02/2018 20:54

I really hope you like the cc cream Mint I’ll feel responsible if you don’t!

I’m not syncing with anyone’s cycle as mine is all over the place (peri menopause) I haven’t had a period since before Christmas and I am not complaining about that. Just a bit annoying as I never know when I might get one, they are typically very light but I still need to cart supplies round with me all the time ‘just in case’.

userallusedup · 04/02/2018 20:58

Just seen your post TSmummy did you buy that in Spain? One of my friends is going soon and was on about buying some, she offered to bring me some back too but I’m wary. I’m still thinking of seeing a derm to get a prescription but the prices are putting me off, as well as the minefield of trying to find a good one.

yongnian · 04/02/2018 21:08

Haha just catching up with the cycle chat - literally a day or 2 after I posted here for the first time in so long, my period unexpectedly turned up a week early! So I'm claiming synchronisation of epic proportions!! Grin. I also have a cystic spot of similar proportions, which I haven't had for ages and a stinking migraine beforehand which I also haven't had for ages. Must have been the short cycle.
Nothing else useful to add.
Interested to hear about properties of spearmint though....

JDSTER · 04/02/2018 21:24

Thanks Bo. The skin graze was immediate following the eyebrow waxing. Very minor and all gone now but I’ll need to think about just threading from now on. No they’re not dry and you’re right about general lack of collagen being a probable culprit Sad. It’s odd because some days they seem like the eyelid has lost some definition and other days (today for example) it’s not particularly obvious. I had a facial yesterday (Carita) with a lot of massage (therapist wears gloves and some sort of current passes through them- I can certainly feel it!) so maybe that has dispersed a bit of fluid that I was holding in the face.

In other news Dr Sam has a YouTube video out on ‘layering skincare’ which is a good reminder of the most important actives to use and when. She advocates building up to daily retinoid/retinol use to get “the most bang for your buck”. Nothing groundbreaking but a good video I thought.

mintmagnummm · 04/02/2018 21:39

Don't worry user I won't hold you responsible if I don't like it lol, I'm just grateful for the recommendations and you never know until you try! Fingers crossed it will be 'the one'

botemp · 04/02/2018 23:01

I know I get shouty caps about it, and really would prefer people don't go it alone but I know you're a responsible sort, JDSTER, but are you thinking of picking up some contraband on your upcoming holiday?

As a next step, legalities aside, I don't see it as a bad move, for your concerns it seems a better choice than the Differin.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 04/02/2018 23:17

Thanks Olli. Looking forward to trying it. Haven't had any new facial skin products for a while.

mintmagnummm · 05/02/2018 10:34

Got my cc cream woo hoo lol, now I can't wait for tomorrow morning to try it!! I'm mega impressed with the packaging, it came in a lovely white box which I will definitely keep.

EnidButton · 05/02/2018 15:16

Really pissed off woth Mimi Holliday. They won't answer emails and their phone goes dead after 'transferring your call'. No voicemail, no human being, nothing. They took £170 out of my account over a week ago with nothing despatched. Wtf.

mintmagnummm · 05/02/2018 15:41

What is mimi holiday Enid? Did you actually place an order with them?

Pupsiecola · 05/02/2018 16:04

Anyone familiar with Masumi?

botemp · 05/02/2018 17:51

How annoying Enid Angry. I had actually been considering an order but there wasn't much left in my size in the sale.

Never heard of Masumi, Pupsie.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 05/02/2018 17:54

Knickers Mint! Grin Well, fancy bras and knickers.

I've finally got through bo and have asked to cancel my order. Pretty disappointed but it's been a week and the lack of communication soured it.

mintmagnummm · 05/02/2018 18:08

Can anyone recommend a nice facial oil to go under my eucerin urea face cream a few evenings a week? Just trying to up the hydration. I'm using the Vichy 89 in the am but wanted something for the pm

botemp · 05/02/2018 18:14

I'd just use the Vichy at night as well, mint. And if using an oil just on top of it, rice bran oil may be the most harmless, I know you never got on with Jojoba.

We're the same size aren't we, Enid? I got a lovely set from Stella McCartney, btw, it's mostly silk (something like 91%) there's a few on the Outnet at the moment I think, they're quite tight in the band so size up.

Also, my predictive powers when it comes to myself are quite shit. It's day one.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 05/02/2018 18:26

🧐

I ordered a 30ff and then various knickers and a really nice black robe. Argh it was all so nice too. Poor customer service/communication is my pet peeve though so...

Tbf when I eventually spoke to someone she was very polite and apologetic.

mintmagnummm · 05/02/2018 18:47

I'm not a lover of single oils bo. May try the Vichy in pm too or might just keep it as it is and only use my eucerin in pm. I'm having an indecisive moment, can you tell 😂

JDSTER · 05/02/2018 19:05

I wasn’t planning contraband actually Bo. I’m probably too responsible and would prefer to see a derm and have it prescribed. I’d love to see Dr Sam. I dont want any old derm, I want one that loves skincare so you get the full package to discuss a routine etc. I’m not sure how long the wait list is to see her Hmm

mintmagnummm · 05/02/2018 19:10

Why does my skin break out post period? (Also pre and during) but I notice more whiteheads and spots just as I come off 🤔

EnidButton · 05/02/2018 19:14

Do your eating or sleeping habits change whilst on your period Mint?

botemp · 05/02/2018 19:39

I'd wager a few months, maybe? Dr. Emma seems a good second choice and likely a shorter waiting list.

Mint, you mentioned being highly irregular, might be down to that as your cycle isn't as predictive and hormone levels will be all over the place.

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 05/02/2018 20:54

Enid not particularly no, I always crave chocolate and rubbish Grin

Maybe bo who knows 🙄
