Which brands do you think are overrated?

I think Dior and Chanel are.

Dior foundation was rubbish and my Chanel lipstick has no staying power and ends up everywhere.

What brands do you think are overrated?

Origins
Dermalogica

ihatethecold · 03/10/2017 15:53

Mac. So overrated.

coffeekittens · 03/10/2017 15:55

Clinique skin care and foundation leaves my skin a flaky, oily, itchy and patchy mess.

Charlotte Tilbury definately.

99% of what you receive in a birchbox is pure crap.

Tangle teezers aswell, home bargains do one that does exactly the same but for less than £2.

SquirrelPlantedBeech · 03/10/2017 16:19

Charlotte Tilbury. I do like the packaging though. Blush

raspberrysuicide · 03/10/2017 16:26

Clinique foundation is awful and their lip gloss is sticky and horrible but their mascara is the best one I've ever had.
I'm not keen on Mac personally.

Lottapianos · 03/10/2017 16:31

'I honestly think that almost without exception (foundation being one ) if you can find the shades and textures you like in Rimmel, L'Oreal, Revlon etc, they quality is as good as premium brands'

Totally agree. My Essence, Maybelline and Revlon lipsticks are loads better than what I have tried from YSL or Charlotte Tilbury. And MAC lipsticks - the range of colours and formulas are amazing but every single one I tried was ridiculously drying.

My Rimmel foundation (Match Perfection) is fabulous. Better than Laura Mercier Candleglow and a quarter of the price. More expensive definitely doesn't always mean better. I have a load of Boots points saved up and keep considering investing in a Chanel lipstick or something but I have heard such very mixed reviews.......

laramara · 03/10/2017 16:31

Clarins eye shadows, just shocking!
Dior make up honestly is fab, eye shadows really brilliant, Chanel foundation blushers too, agree nail polish hugely disappointing though.
Benefit brow products very pricey, I find Maybelline equivalent just as effective and a fraction of the price.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 03/10/2017 16:36

Agree about Channel. Have had two lipliners that were just scratchy, when you sharpen then (with their sharpener) it just seems to leave a lot of the woody-bit so you have to scratch your lips to get the damn stuff on! Also, the lids broke remarkably quickly, and they have now changed them, so it must have been an issue. Also Moulton Brown. Reasonable shower gel, but not exciting. Their candles and fragrance don't have that much fragrance IMO, and for that price, I expect them to have a bit more.

Flatbum · 03/10/2017 17:03

Hate hate hate hate hate Jo Malone products for skincare etc. Just love the smell and their candles. Hate clinique and i also as a PP has said bought the 3 step and my skin was worse than ever afterwards and has never properly recovered!!

Flatbum · 03/10/2017 17:06

OH i forgot and dermalogica makeup is horrendous

PollyPerky · 03/10/2017 17:11

Is it really fair though to say things like 'Clinique foundation is awful'. Maybe it's just not right for your skin?

I used to use Clinique foundation because at the time it was the only one around that wasn't perfumed and I had terrible eczema. In the end I ditched it because they discontinued pale shades. I adored their Repairwear - the first sort, not what they have now.

Pricy brands- you are paying for the staff, their concessions in stores, the packaging, the advertising, the whole 'lifestyle' thing of buying a premium brand.

SelmaAndJubjub · 03/10/2017 17:14

YY to Molton Brown, Spongebob. I don't get the love for it at all.

BusterGonad · 03/10/2017 17:30

I love Chanel's rouge velvet mat lipsticks, they are gorgeous, I'm not over excited by Mac, I love my Dior star foundation but some of their eyeshadow palettes can be hit and miss, Lancôme lipsticks are also great. Smashbox mat lipsticks are beautiful but do flake and dry out after a few hours.
I can put up with certain annoyances in the name of beauty but my biggest hate is when make up has no pigment. I really really hate it when eyeshadows look gorgeous in the palette but the colour just goes blurgh on your face!

BusterGonad · 03/10/2017 17:31

Nails Inc nail polishes never dry for me, they always get dented or smudged! Angry

Vintagebeads · 03/10/2017 17:47

Bourjois foundation healthy mix is better on me than ysl touche eclait foundation.I just couldn't see any difference.Except the cost.

thethoughtfox · 03/10/2017 17:56

Diptyque. Spent a lot of money on a fancy Christmas candle last year. Boxes and boxes and fabulous tissue paper and you couldn't smell it unless you were standing holding it under your nose. The irony is, the cheaper one that I have from John Lewis that sat near it, smelled much stronger than it and is wasn't even lit.

I don't think you can write off a brand as over-rated because one product didn't work for you.

The reason there are so many products on the market is because not everything suits, or works for everyone.

Agree 'which' is correct!

BusterGonad · 03/10/2017 19:23

I get frustrated when people say touché éclat is a rubbish concealer, it's NOT a concealer that's why!!!!

Ktown · 03/10/2017 21:24

Chanel eyeshadows are crap and their face powders are talc-y and aren't great.
Nail polishes are rubbish.
Lovely lovely packaging.

BusterGonad · 03/10/2017 21:35

I disagree KTown Chanel eyeshadows are great, you've just got to know how to work them. I have about 5 Chanel quids and 2 limited edition palettes, only one was disappointing but I think it was suppose to give a wash of colour and I like full on colours.

Vintagebeads · 04/10/2017 09:54

Buster,
I was talking about touche eclait foundation which is hugely expensive and no better than what's is superdrug.
But the also dupe in Aldi of the pen highlighter/concealer is also no better than the ysl original.
I can't imagine why any one would get frustrated because someone prefers one product over another, and yes I am well aware its not a concealer.

Ididnthearanything · 04/10/2017 10:34

Another vote for Molton Brown. Expensive, harsh, fancy-coloured, well marketed, cheap-ingredient soap. Rubbish. Their body lotions are not much better.

karalime · 04/10/2017 10:41

Another one for Mac.

Foundations too yellow, chalky and made me break out.

Mineralize skin finish is nice but the crap design means most of it ends up in the sink before it gets on your face. Rimmel is just as good.

Lipsticks are nice but no better than ones half the price.

BusterGonad · 05/10/2017 16:48

Vintage I didn't mean you. Noooo....I mean I often read on here about people saying the highlighter is rubbish as a concealer NOT the foundation!
