Is year 3 too old to be wearing velcro shoes?

My son loves kickers for his school shoes. He's had a pair a year since he started school. Thing is he's going into year three now and has asked for laces for the first time but the velcro ones are cheaper. Would it be awful to just get him those? Would it be babyish?

Mine refused velcro since year two even on trainers. Mine are quite stubborn and would just not wear them so it would be waste of money.
How much cheaper are they?

Mellington · 27/08/2017 09:46

Can he tie laces?

NancyJoan · 27/08/2017 09:47

My DS is yr 4, he's still got Velcro shoes ( he has tiny feet so most school shoes in his size are velcro). Much quicker for changes at school,

But, good for your DS to choose his own, I suppose.

Flumplet · 27/08/2017 09:55

Oh god I didn't even realise this is a thing... ds is 6 and only really wears Velcro shoes Confused

zozozoo · 27/08/2017 09:57

He can tie laces just fine. So the low ones are about a fiver more and the high ones twelve so I'm just being a cheapskate really. Just wondered what the consensus was :)

What age is year 3? Is that around 7ish? (I'm not in England, so get a bit mixed up with school years on here sometimes)

I see loads of boys at my kids school who are much older than that but still wear velcro shoes. I think velcro is fine, in that it's not ridiculous. But if he feels strongly that he wants laces, I would let him have them.

2014newme · 27/08/2017 10:00

For a fiver is it worth making him wear shoes he doesn't like.

zozozoo · 27/08/2017 10:49

No of course not 2014 but it depends on how strongly he cares. While I can afford it i'm not rich so if I can save a fiver here or there I will.

My ds is 10 and had Velcro shoes. They have to change shoes several times a day (have to wear indoor shoes at school) so its faster to have Velcro rather than laces

CarolinePenvenen · 27/08/2017 10:54

Just asked dd1 (going into year 5) and she says all of the boys wear velcro shoes. And she’s chosen velcro straps as opposed to buckles so it doesn’t seem to be a thing here at all.

Ninjakittysmells · 27/08/2017 10:59

Ds school actively asks parents to keep children in Velcro shoes as they swop to wellies / PE kit etc numerous times a day and need to be able to do it themselves.

Frazzled2207 · 27/08/2017 11:01

I couldn't do laces until high school Confused.

titchy · 27/08/2017 11:11

Velcro quite common at secondary, so yes of course it's ok for year 3..

ShesNoNormanPace · 27/08/2017 11:14

DS2 is going into yr6 and wearing velcro. Mind you DS1 is going into year 9 and chose velcro shoes yesterday Hmm so perhaps my kids are atypical. His trainers and football boots etc are all laces, he just finds that shoe more comfy.

SuzukiLi · 27/08/2017 11:15

My 22 year old brother wears Velcro shoes because he can't tie laces Grin

CockPisssPartridge · 27/08/2017 11:16

Mine have Velcro shoes and they're YR5 and YR3

Afreshstartplease · 27/08/2017 11:16

My older 3 all have velcro kickers for school, eldest is going into year 5

ASauvingnonADay · 27/08/2017 11:17

Lots of our Y7 and 8 boys (11-13) still in Velcro shoes!

CycleHire · 27/08/2017 11:20

Oh crikey. I hope not. Son going into yr 3 and still has Velcro shoes. I don't think he could manage to tie laces.

DS is about to go into Year 3. He is determinedly teaching himself how to tie laces after some parental coaching, but he will definitely be going back to school with velcro this term.

gingerbeerd · 27/08/2017 11:26

I would say it's on the cusp. If he's not going through shoes quickly I'd say go for laces, but if you're not expecting that they'll last awfully long and he doesn't mind too much I'd go for it. I think I might be in the minority though (might also be an Australian slight culture difference?)

MimsyBorogroves · 27/08/2017 11:30

Mine's going into y5 with Velcro. He can't get the hang of laces.

StrumpersPlunkett · 27/08/2017 11:32

Yr 6 here Velcro.
Older ds stopped for yr 8

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 27/08/2017 13:31

Dd is 9 and going into Y5 and has asked specifically for Velcro shoes as it means less time faffing about with laces at playtime.

What does your DS say about the matter?
