Is year 3 too old to be wearing velcro shoes?

My son loves kickers for his school shoes. He's had a pair a year since he started school. Thing is he's going into year three now and has asked for laces for the first time but the velcro ones are cheaper. Would it be awful to just get him those? Would it be babyish?

Velcro all the way at primary. Only stops at secondary. Maybe.

My Y4 child was one of only two kids in her class with laces last year - everyone else had Velcro (including all the boys). So I would think it would be fine.

Y3 teacher here. They nearly all have Velcro. And the ones that don't often can't do them up. He certainly won't be the only one with Velcro shoes.

My son was at secondary school when he was finally "encouraged" to stop wearing Velcro shoes and he certainly wasn't the only one. He can tie shoelaces although still does 'bunny ears' (I blame DH who taught him that way 😀). The only reason he wanted Velcro was because he was too damn lazy to keep tying his laces! He's now in 6th form and has to wear a business suit. He has suddenly realised you can buy slip on shoes and now wants a pair because he is still too damn lazy to tie up his laces!

No need to worry in Year 3 Op!

Yr 7 ds has slip on school shoes this year but that's because we couldn't find any Velcro sized 6

Yr 6 ds has Velcro shoes

I love that this is in style andbeauty, firmly marking it as an aesthetic decision for a 7yo, rather than a practical/ frugal enquiry...

No laces until secondary school here. They can tie them but speed is of the essence when getting changed at primary.

My nephew is 11 and has been wearing Velcro shoes this past year for school

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/08/2017 17:34

Dses had Velcro then slip ons, not a lace to be seen in this house.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 27/08/2017 17:36

Ds1 wore Velcro until year 8, ds2 has just got lace ups now, about to go in to year 9.

Dh (57) wears Velcro shoesGrin

Both my older boys had Velcro until senior school. DS3 is Y2 and I expect he'll be the same. They could both tie laces by Y3 and tied their trainers and rugby boots at the weekend but stuck with Velcro at sch until Y7. I think most boys did.

Thanks guys we went for the velcro in the end as he was happy with that. And according to you lot it's not at all weird :D

I totally misread your op and thought you had a three year old who could tie their own laces, I was equally impressed and alarmed by how far away from that my 3 eye ar old is Grin
Glad he is happy
