Wide legged trousers for wedding (guest)?

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 12/08/2017 12:14

We've been invited to a wedding (or at least, we've been told we're going to be - it's a few months away) and I'm already stressing about what to wear. To explain: as well as being a bit overweight (14-16) I can't wear dresses, skirts or high heels due to a medical condition that makes my legs and feet swell, so I live in wide legged trousers, brogues and boys' trainers.

I'm lucky that wide-leg trousers are back at the moment - the fashion for skinnies has been a nightmare - but the ones I've seen so far have mainly been nasty polyester suiting material and I think maybe that along with colours available (black, navy) have made them look more like workwear than wedding guest. A few years ago I wore cream linen wide-legs with cream brogues and a silk top to a summer wedding so I think I'm looking for a winter equivalent, although I think this wedding is more formal than that was. Maybe even a trouser suit, again as long as it doesn't look like I'm going to a meeting rather than a wedding. Not sure what exactly I'm after other than that but think I'll know it when I see it, iykwim, and would very much appreciate suggestions of where to start looking as I don't shop often and stick with the same casual clothing shops in the main.

Budget wise, probably up to £80-90 for the trousers, more for a suit of course, up to £80 for the shoes too unless I could wear them a lot afterwards. Not averse to secondhand or online only, as long as it can be returned and refunded if it doesn't work when I try it on. Thank you!

When I was bigger than I am now, I wore wide leg silk type trousers to a wedding together with a very naice long silk jacket. I had a number of compliments (all genuine I think) on the jacket. Sadly it's massive on me now.

Worth keeping an eye on Finery London. They do quite a few very nice (and sometimes very odd!) wide leg trousers and the last two a/w seasons they've done a gorgeous pair of velvet ones. Burgundy last year and antique gold the year before. Google 'Finery velvet trousers' and check the image tab, the first few pictures are them.

I have exactly the same issue OP (Lipoedema/Lymphoedema?), although am also a short arse, so finding wide legged trousers that are 12 inches too long isn't easy. I've been looking at Indian style clothing lately - some of it can look really smart. I'm a bit of a hippy though, so might not be to your taste.Grin

You could look at the autumn winter stuff in Cos for wide legged trousers and a coordinated top or jacket

IreneDunne · 12/08/2017 13:50

I agree with PP about Finery.

Also try Massimo Dutti (some more unusual colours) and Uterque.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 12/08/2017 14:06

Yes @SignoraStronza, lymphoedema. It's rubbish isn't it? My legs were once my best feature Sad but now stay hidden at all times, and I've had to chuck out countless pairs of shoes as my feet no longer fit.

I agree with the suggestion of looking at Indian clothing. A salwar chemise can be made with wide trousers and a long top.

Something like this

Thanks for suggestions of Finery, Massimo Dutti and Uterque (all new to me). Cos - whenever I've looked online I've thought they look like clothes that only 6 ft size 0 models could look good in, but I've seen it mentioned enough to suspect I may be mistaken!

I think ive worn a skirt/dress half a dozen times so i have always worn trousers to weddings i did wear sliky wide leg once and being under 5ft they were a big mistake imo i looked ridiculous Blush

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 12/08/2017 14:12

Not sure I could carry off an Indian outfit, tbh. Gorgeous fabrics and colours though.

Uniqlo currently have some lovely wide leg trousers, including velvet.

Yewtown · 12/08/2017 14:27

How about something like this www.phase-eight.com/fcp/product/phase-eight/jumpsuits/tia-sleeveless-jumpsuit/204341731 with a jacket

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 12/08/2017 14:37

Hmm. The uniqlo velour ones are elasticated waist so not sure if they would be formal enough for wedding wear. There was a pair if wide leg trousers that looked promising but they're polyester.

I've also taken a look at Massimo Dutti and Finery and think they're too high end fashion for a late 40s podgy size 14. I don't need to be edgy, just well turned out for once.

I hate clothes shopping.

I got some v good quality wide legged trousers from the Jaeger sale. Their outlet site is also v good.

And I did indeed wear them to a wedding, with a fitted crepe top

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 12/08/2017 14:39

@Yewtown that jumpsuit is very lovely (and I do like red) but wouldn't it have to be worn with high heels? Could it be styled with flat shoes?

Out2pasture · 12/08/2017 14:52

Jacques Verte does palazzo pants with coordinated tops.

CWG17 · 12/08/2017 14:53

How about a wide-legged jumpsuit?

fluffiphlox · 12/08/2017 16:19

A jumpsuit is a good way to go if you're tall enough.

Yewtown · 12/08/2017 16:25

I think it could work with pointed flats in black patent or a metallic colour. Something like this could work www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/womens-shoes-boots/flats/ar842-blk/womens-black-slipper-shoe

AdelicaArundel · 12/08/2017 17:30

OP if you search for the Whistles Autumn 2017 campaign on their website, there are several "looks" that might work?

There's quite a bit of velvet, and a bootiful port wine coloured velvet trousers suit.
Worth a look, even if only for inspiration?

TheCatsWhiskers · 12/08/2017 18:06

How about Jacques Vert?

livefrommysofa · 12/08/2017 18:21

There's loads of palazzo pants out there.

I love my Phase 8 jumpsuits - have one in black and one in aubergine. They are sooooo comfy.
Reminds me of going to a friends wedding in a February. Wore.a tight fitting dress to the day and took the jumpsuit for the eve in case I wanted to change.
Did change and then was in the loos when the bride (good friend) came in. She was so uncomfortable in her dress she was in tears so she tried on the jumpsuit and it fitted. So another friend when back to my room and got my dress and the bride wore the jumpsuit all night lol

Lucked · 13/08/2017 00:41

these red Marella trousers are very weddingy but not left in a 14 so order quick to try on. Marella have a few pairs of wide leg trousers on the HOF website

LK Bennett in a lovely green.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 13/08/2017 08:46

@Lucked those red trousers are a lovely shape but £90 for polyester? Jacques vert also polyester central. Also my mum is likely to be sporting Jacques Vert.

I feel like I'm being very negative here. I'm feeling very negative. I think I'm coming to the conclusion (again) is the reason I don't shop is because I hate 95% of the clothes in the shops and the other 5% I can't afford (Jaeger and Whistles and Poetry and Toast all way beyond budget.)

This is why most of my wardrobe comes from eBay.
