Hello!

So I have just about run out of all my make up as have been on maternity leave and wanting to save money haven't bought anything. Plus to be honest I haven't wanted to wear make up that much anyway.

That being said I'm heading back to work soon and would love to get a full make up kit together. I've been saving up so have a little money put aside for new clothes, make up etc so would love to hear your recommendations!

I'm particularly interested in:

Primer (for pores/oiliness)
Foundation
Mascara
Lip products
Powders

What do you think is worth buying?

Thanks in advance Grin

Kiko mascara in the gold tube is the nuts. Their brushes are lovely too. Mac longwear foundation is my current fave, and the rimmel primers are ace. Collection powder is supposed to be good, not tried it myself yet. Primark foundations are getting a lot of good reviews on here just now. Lips-wise you can't do better for a nude lip than the charlotte tilbury pillow talk pencil and bitchperfect lipstick. Smashbox have exciting lip stuff and also nyx lip stuff is good. Happy shopping xx

Ooh thank you! That's great. Lots of ideas xx

Foundation really depends on a lot of different factors - how long it want it to last, what kind of finish you'd like (dewy, matte), your skin type. I use Armani Luminous Silk.

Mascara - Urban decay Perversion.

Powder - rimmel stay matte does the job tbh! I'm not much into powder. I prefer using fixing/setting sprays, specifically Mac fix+ and Urban decay all nighter.

Primer - never found one I absolutely love. Catrice do a nice one. No idea what the name is but it's in clear and black packaging.

Mac/Nars for lip products. I'm very fussy about shades, so need to be able to try them first.

AnnieOH1 · 30/07/2017 12:51

Wilkos primer in a pink tube tested well on Shop Well for Less; its comparable to Mich higher end products I've used previously.

Mascara - I've used stuff like they're real to no real effect. However Essence, a german brand stocked by Wilkos does some amazing mascaras. They work for me put it that way. I used to love the original coupe d'theatre by boujois but since changing formulation it's never worked for me since.

Make Up Revolution at Superdrug has some brilliant dupes, and a setting spray that's easily comparable to Urban Decay.

The best powder (again tried many but now stick with it strictly) Rimmel Stay Matte - not the transparent one.

I've just recently returned to work after ML.

This is what I wear every day after serum and moisturiser:

L'oreal infallible matte foundation (not horribly matte but lasts all day!)
Rimmel wake me up concealer (for odd spots)
Seventeen phwoar paint heavy duty under eye concealer
L'oreal infallible gel crayon in browny crush (more natural at the office)
Maybelline great lash mascara which is great for an everyday look
Benefit gimme brow
Sleek blush rose gold
Rimmel translucent powder

Followed by either

Essence mini sheer lipbalm in chubby berry
Or
Primark sheer shine lip crayon

Although they are sheer, both have a lot of colour to them. They feel nice on my lips and were super cheap!

MrsChopper · 30/07/2017 13:10

Left - primark
Right - essence

Primer - Benefit Porefessional or the No 7 pore minimiser airbrush one
Mascara - Benefit Rollerlash
Eyeshadow - Urban Decay Naked
Blusher - Benefit Dandelion and/or Benetint
Foundation - currently using No 7 but looking to upgrade it
Just bought some Gimmebrow
Powder - don't use but would be interested in recs for a translucent one
Lipstick - red = No 7 longlasting one; otherwise I just tend to use tinted lipbalm from either Korres or Burts Bees

misskelly · 30/07/2017 13:50

I really like Charlotte Tilbury makeup but it is expensive. I just bought the natural face pallet in the online sale reduced from £50 to £30 and it's lovely especially if you have a pale skin tone. It has three eyeshadows, bronzer, highlighter and two blushes so I think it's worth it.

MissAlabamaWhitman · 30/07/2017 13:51

Primer- one heck of a blot by soap &glory
Foundation- Dior capture totale
Eyeshadow-Elizabeth Arden in 'blonde' a sort of metallic nude
Blusher-collection chubby stick, the pink one
Mascara- L'Oréal miss manga
Lipstick -Nivea rose with Rimmel exaggerate liner in 'eastend snob'
Avon glimmerstick eyebrow pencil for brows.

Auldspinster · 30/07/2017 14:16

Kiko long lasting eyeshadow sticks are amazing.

featheryfancy · 30/07/2017 14:26

Primer has absolutely got to be Smashbox for me. Nothing else compares!

PollyPerky · 30/07/2017 14:34

Foundation- Dior Star

Mascara - Lancome Hypnose

Blusher- Bobbi Brown powder blusher

takeyourdog · 30/07/2017 16:08

Foundation - Touché Eclat
Primer - Laura Mercier
Eye liner - Stila
Corrector - Bobbi Brown
Tubing Mascara - Clinique

Still looking for my perfect nude eyeshadow & my lips but better lipstick.

captainfunderpants · 30/07/2017 16:57

Foundation and lip and eye products I always go for Bobbi Brown as my high end choice. I don't use primer usually, but was given a sample of the Bobbi Brown illuminating moisture balm (you can mix it with foundation) and I love it, so might splurge on that next. I also just joined Beauty Pie - you pay a £10 monthly subscription but can buy their products at cost price, so a moisturiser that would be £50 in the shops is around £5 or £7 to members. I've joined for 3 months to see if it's worth it.

elkiedee · 30/07/2017 20:32

Lots of recommendations for Rimmel powder! Might have to have a look.

Just started to wear make up more regularly again after hardly ever using it for about 17 years. Before when I did I mostly used Boots No 7 with a very dark eyeshadow, think Rimmel. (I have quite dark brown eyes).

I've been sent some random make up items to review, and really like Bourjois Volume Reveal Mascara which you can apply in layers - it comes in a triangular tube so doesn't roll away and has a x3 mirror strip on one side of the tube so you can just hold it up to see what you're doing to your eyes - handy if you are short sighted or like me long sighted and need glasses to read and see detail close up! It comes in 4 shades of black though I've just used the one marked "black" - have bought an "ultra black" and will probably get more with my remaining Boots vouchers courtesy of a MN prize draw.

34AQuid · 30/07/2017 22:53

I tart around between mostly cheap stuff and the odd splurge.

My higher end musts are:

Cliniqe Self Sun elf tan
Elemis cleansing balm
YSL lipliner
YSL Touche Eclat
Smashbox Primer

Other than that, I''m happily a cheap arse:

Foundation - Bourjois CC cream. Fantastic light-medium coverage for a 40 yr old with good skin but no longer a luscious spring chicken (obvs).

Mascara - Loreal Telescopic. I like a curved brush that separates and lengthens lashes, though, Depends what you want

Lip products - my YSL lipliner is dry yet creamy and seals my colour in beautifully, so I can use any old cheap colour/balm/gloss. Current fave is Bodyshop lip stain, which is like 'my lip colour but better'.

Powders - I use a cheap Boots translucent powder to set, and Ultraglow for bronzer. Cheap and does the trick.

34AQuid · 30/07/2017 22:53

self tan - elf tan would be odd Grin

LeafyCulprit · 31/07/2017 09:27

Primers- Don't really wear one regularly to be honest but do have some Smashbox Photo Finish and it is lovely.

Mascara- Absolutely has to be Yves Saint Laurent 'Extreme' I think it's called, in a black tube with silver handle. All I get when I'm wearing it (which is every day) is 'Where did you get your lash extensions done, they look so natural'

Concealor- Smashbox colour corrector stick in beige, amazing stuff.

Can't recommend a foundation as I don't wear it.

Lip stain- Again, Smashbox (though can't remember what my one is called) but it just gives a lovely rosey, dewy, bee stung sort of look.

Bronzer- I've tried some of the more expensive ones, but always come back to the Bourjois one in the big, brown 'case'

woodhill · 31/07/2017 09:35

Couldn't see the extreme Ysl one anywhere. Have you a link thanks

user1497695727 · 31/07/2017 09:43

Foundation - urban decay all nighters great for oily skin and a little goes a long way. L'Oréal infallible is a great high street alternative though

Primer- try the L'Oréal matt it's a gel in a transparent tube really good for oily skin

Powder - I find with oily skin the transparent loose powders are great. Mac prep and prime is great but Superdrug have started stocking E.L.F who do a great cheaper alternative

pinkstripe · 31/07/2017 09:58

Foundation: get yourself on the waiting list here: https://www.victoriahealth.com

for The Ordinary Colours. I've got the serum one and it's amazing and only costs £5.70 Smile
Blusher: the little pots from Bourjois.
Mascara: They're Real, Benefit.

bakedbeansandtuna · 31/07/2017 14:06

Erborian BB cream for every day
Armani Foundation for now and again
NARS Orgasm blush in powder form
Mascara - never really impressed with any of them but 2000 calorie Max Factors doesn't seem like I am getting ripped off.
Cleanser - Dermatologica Essential Cleaning Solution
Shampoo/conditioner: I like the milk shake range which I tried after hearing about here!!
Eyeshadow: NYX from Boots, nice and cheap.
Liquid eyeliner: Kiko
Eyebrow powder - Smashbox

I'm still looking for a perfect night time moisturiser though. :)

woodhill · 31/07/2017 17:48
