I don't understand really expensive sunglasses

TinyGang · 15/03/2007 14:01

I mean sunglasses all look pretty much the same to me from a quality pov.

They are usually plastic of some sort, get broken, shoved in bag, sat on and lost under the car seat.

Anything over a tenner is a waste of money isn't it?

unless you have to have prescription sunglasses ggrrrr - then they tend to be a lot more expensive annoyingly!

Psycho · 15/03/2007 14:03

I've always thought this.

And it's nice to have several different pairs for different 'looks'.

can't do this if £100 a time.

but £7.99 from New Look and I'm Jackie O one day, Kate Moss the next!!

Nip · 15/03/2007 14:04

I buy expensive ones but only because normal cheapy ones dont blardy fit! I would LOVE to be able to buy cheapy ones!

DeviousDaffodil · 15/03/2007 14:06

People just buy them, because they have a logo on.
Then thye can say 'Oh yes they are Chanel' or whatever and god forbid you should wear last years style.
Load of bobbins if you ask me thye all come from the same bloody factory.
Loads of fakes on ebay.

TinyGang · 15/03/2007 14:06

Oh yes of course prescription ones are another thing. Annoyingly expensive and still get shoved in handbag/sat on etc

I was looking in the Next book though. Vesace sunglasses for £128??

I'd have thought (don't wear them at all really) that it's worth paying a bit for them (like £20) just to make sure you're getting some fairly good quality lenses, to protect your eyes properly. But maybe even the cheaper ones are OK from this point of view?

TinyGang · 15/03/2007 14:07

I bought some for £3.99 in Wilkinsons and they're really nice. They all look the same to me.

I must mix in the right circles.

No one EVER asks me where my sunglasses came from.

Or maybe it's because they realise they're from New look and don't want to embarass me

MamaG · 15/03/2007 14:08

I'm NOT doing cheapy sunglasses this year. LAst year 3 pairs broke in 3 months.

This year I'm going to get as expensive as i can afford - my sis got some for £120 and have lasted her years

TeeCee · 15/03/2007 14:09

I used to buy expensive deigner sunglasses and then got sick of watching £250 + quid get run over by a car, dropped over cliffs etc etc.

£2 Primark - sorted, AND everyone always says 'ohhh nice glasses where are they from?' when I wear them! Best were my freebie Marie Claire ones, I got loads of comments in them!

foxinsocks · 15/03/2007 14:09

you know you'll sit on them MamaG

Psycho · 15/03/2007 14:09

I have expensive real glasses, and they still break when you sit on them.

maybe your sister is just very careful?

DeviousDaffodil · 15/03/2007 14:10

TC - £250!!!
KEels over at the thought!

newgirl · 15/03/2007 14:10

i guess really cheap ones don;t have the sun protection in them? i tend to spend about 20 quid which tends to have a little leaflet on them saying good for UV this that and the other

TinyGang · 15/03/2007 14:12

I'm good at leaving them in places pubs/restaurants etc.

Take them off, remember not to put them in my bag cos they'll get broken, then leave them behind on the table

TeeCee · 15/03/2007 14:15

Yes Motherhood has seen me go from £250 to £2.50! In those days I was also stick thin, probaly cos I spent all my money on shoes, handbags, shades and other naughties!

dither · 15/03/2007 14:17

a lot of the designer names arent necesartily better lenses - just a name tag.

BUT v good quality lenses are v much worth it.
i have photochromic polarised lenses in a pair of serengeti napoli's and they do look cool, sure, but seriously, the lenses are EONS apart from cheapy ones (i also have lots of cheapy ones coz i am fickle and like to change and cant justify having 10 pairs of v expensive ones)

but one pair, if only for driving - amazing difference.

and b/c you love them so much, you take better care of them.

DeviousDaffodil · 15/03/2007 14:18

Thread hijack - TC just had a peek at your profile - your daughters in the chimney oh my God!!

Aloha · 15/03/2007 14:18

at TC! Yes, I looked down at a waterfall once...bye bye Gucci sunglasses...also once sitting in a little rowing boat on a lake, all romantic, dh says 'look at that!' I swivel head quickly and the action propels beautiful Bulgari sunglasses soaring from my face to land with a delicate plop into the murky waters. I was so, so pissed off.
Have some quite nice Kangol ones atm but from TK Maxx

BettySpaghetti · 15/03/2007 14:19

Have a look at notdesigner.com -they have loads of styles based on all the curent styles and celeb trends for around £10-19. They often have a BOGOF deal on too.

TeeCee · 15/03/2007 14:19

DeviousDaffodil - LOL!!! It was hilarious! I know I should have been cross but it was just so funny! That'll teach us to go upstairs and leave em alone for 5 minutes!

Nip · 15/03/2007 14:20

Does NO ONE else have a problem with sun glasses fitting or is it just me? I have a high bridge on my nose so they often sit too high and look down right ridiculous...

{{{now i'm pondering the thought that your all imagining a right freaky faced nip! LOL!}}}

CODalmighty · 15/03/2007 14:20

CODalmighty · 15/03/2007 14:20
