Epilator - thoughts?

TootsyBella84 · 10/04/2017 09:54

I'm sick of wet shaving my legs with a razor. Recently I've been getting itchy legs and a shaving rash no matter how much I moisturise or whatever!
Anyway, I'm thinking of getting an Epilator.

  1. Is it really, really sore?!
  2. Can you recommend a low budget one that does the job?

Thank you in advance!

Tubby the Lumea is a laser right? Do you think it's worth it? Keen to hear your thoughts!

Tubbyinthehottub · 12/04/2017 15:18

Yes, I think it's worth it. It takes a few months until you notice a difference but now I hardly have any hairs on my legs at all, just a few where I've missed bits. I should really go over these patches again with the Lumea but it's so quick just to razor them off! Knees are a bit harder to get rid of the hairs, maybe because the skin is thicker? Also it works even better on underarms and bikini, I think that's because the hair is a bit thicker/darker.

tatatetelle · 12/04/2017 15:25

That sounds great..! Silly question - please don't judge - but do you not worry at all about any second hand effect of the laser radiation on your skin? Is there a risk?

Tubbyinthehottub · 12/04/2017 15:39

No, hadn't thought about that to be honest! I just try not to look too much at the light as it flashes.

elephantcuddles · 12/04/2017 15:41

I've always been curious about epilators but they terrify me. How long do you go in between doing it? The pain might be worth it if it lasts at least a couple days in between.

elephantcuddles · 12/04/2017 15:43

tatatatelle - I don't think that's a silly question. I wonder the same thing myself and it's why I havent bought a laser hair removal home device.

tatatetelle · 12/04/2017 16:04

Thanks! I've been thinking about laser, especially for the bikini area since it's such a pain and however I do it (wax, epilator, razor) I always gets nasty ingrowths which take weeks to heal...but I'm still nervous about the long term effect of laser on skin (especially in such a sensible area). But maybe I'm overthinking it.

elephant the epilator results last a good couple of weeks, I refresh once a week in the summer when I wear skirts and shorts and dresses every day but my hairs are...persistant shall we say! And honestly the pain isn't that bad, I do underarms and bikini too sometimes, it's not pleasant, but it's totally fine and I can't feel anything when I do the legs anymore. Definitely worth it.

MrsGotobed · 12/04/2017 16:11

I do my legs but am Shock at the thought of armpits and bikini line. Jeez you lot are hard core!

cheeseknight · 12/04/2017 18:03

Elephant as tatatetelle said epilator lasts weeks not days. I too, do mine more in summer when legs are on show often. The overall regrow the is so much less now too that if I do leave it longer (like in winter) there genuinely isn't much regrow that after 6 weeks!

cheeseknight · 12/04/2017 18:03

Oops sorry - namechanged!

OneOfTheGrundys · 12/04/2017 18:06

I love mine. The first go after a long grow is painful but if you keep it regular it's pretty painless. I got the one that came with the smaller one for the tache and I do mine with it now too!!

lindyloo57 · 12/04/2017 21:10

i have one ,its years old ,as above it really hurts at first, but gets better time,

TootsyBella84 · 13/04/2017 13:34

Thanks ladies. I've decided to bite the bullet and have ordered this one from the argos shop on eBay.
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351873445122

It seems a bargain seeing as the same one is £100 in Boots!

I shall update when it arrives x

Good call! Let us know how you get on!

lindyloo57 · 13/04/2017 21:27

sorry,
i mean better over time.

FiveShelties · 13/04/2017 22:23

Not sure whether to say thank you or not, I have just ordered one from Argos on eBay. If you hear any screams of pain, you will know it has arrived Grin

Tibby2016 · 13/04/2017 22:35

I have a silk epil and it's great. Painful at first but you get used to it. only thing that I have found is I have ingrown hairs a few weeks later does anyone else get this? Although I do love pulling them out Grin

leighdinglady · 13/04/2017 22:52

People on here are obviously made of sterner stuff than me! I found it agony. I made the mistake of doing my bikini line - f**k me that hurt! Eye watering.

Plus it gave me ingrowing hairs

TootsyBella84 · 13/04/2017 23:08

Five we can scream a harmony together 😂

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/04/2017 23:53

I use one (very elderly cheapie QVC one) on my legs, I put a towel on the floor ans just waft it up/down/round and round (I think you're meant to do a circular movement)

Its ok, I can watch TV or drink coffee Grin while I do it.
Feels like a prickling sensation not painful.

FiveShelties · 18/04/2017 22:41

Tootsy has your torture equipment arrived? Mine arrived this morning, not been brave enough to take it out of the box yet, not that I am a coward or anything! I think I may need lots of Wine and Gin

I must say the box looks immaculate, I thought it would be all battered as it was so cheap.

TootsyBella84 · 18/04/2017 22:48

I'm slightly jealous crazy because mine hasn't arrived yet! I'm hoping it comes tomorrow then. Yay glad to hear it's in good nick. Eek I hope it's not awful 😂

OP posts:
FiveShelties · 18/04/2017 22:52

If they are awful, we could put them on eBay as a BOGOF, only one (well two) careful owners Grin

userofthiswebsite · 18/04/2017 23:00

I bought one about 8 years back, a wet and dry one, Braun I think.
Gave up using it because, as with waxing, I hate waiting for the hair to grow long enough to be removed again.
Also whilst fine for underarm and legs, getting rid of all your 'personal hair' I found really tricky because the epilator doesn't work that well on areas that aren't taut skin if that makes sense. At least with a razor you can deal with all the hair in a space of 5 mins even if it does have to be done frequently.

TootsyBella84 · 19/04/2017 14:18

Genius idea Five Grin

Still no sign of my torture equipment today. Just checked tracking and I've no idea where it currently is. So much for 48 hour delivery service!
