Birkenstocks

They're so ugly but I love mine. Are they really awful or sort of fashionable now? Mine are the sandal type, at least 8 years old, and mainly used around the house but I see a few youngsters looking good in them. Opinions?

Not a fan of those Dorothy style ones either!

I think you have to embrace a Birkies fugliness. As a PP says - they aren't pretty shoes, they look best when they're not trying to stand in for pretty.

thriftynow · 08/04/2017 12:18

I love mine. I have three pairs, Gizeh, Mayari and Madrid. I wear them constantly in the summer months.

And after years of my daughter condemning them as granny sandals, she has seen the light and has a pair of Arizonas!

dalek · 08/04/2017 12:26

hoddtastic - your post made me laugh - there I was all smug that I had some pretty Birkies and along you come with your piercing post GrinGrinGrin

boolifooli · 08/04/2017 12:30

My feet or my Birkies do not smell. I have pretty feet with no hard skin, toe jam or crusty heels at all.

So why ruin what god's given you by making your feet look ugly?

ElspethFlashman · 08/04/2017 12:31

I think dalek if you're going to go Birkenstock you have to go FULL Birkenstock.

Those look like ugly Clark's shoes. You wouldn't know they were Birkenstocks and that's the problem.

I have a pair of the mules (Boston?) by the back door for quick trips to shed/washing line. So handy. However they are ones I wouldn't wear further than the corner shop as they're proper Shrek shoes.

boolifooli · 08/04/2017 12:32

My eyes! They're literally bleeding after opening the link for the Dorothys. Too much ugly in one sandal.

dalek · 08/04/2017 12:34

I do have proper ones as well - gold gizeh and some flowery ones as well but am expanding my collection.

My daughter - 16 - hates ALL my birkenstocks - good - means she won't steal them - she steals all my boots and sparkly sandals.

The sun is out - we need to all embrace all of the Birkenstock family

KatieScarlett · 08/04/2017 12:37

I have the Boston mules too. Looks like footwear for cartoon characters. Those I only wear under cover of darkness in case the ACME bomb gets me.

TheOriginalChatelaine · 08/04/2017 12:50

Looking at the Birlenstock website I see there is no size 4. I'm a size 4. Should I go down to 3.5 or up to 4.5. I'm a true 4 for shoes.

ElspethFlashman · 08/04/2017 12:52

God don't size up, they'll be paddles.

TheOriginalChatelaine · 08/04/2017 14:49

Thank you. I've ordered 3.5. Was just having a wobble!! Some ate reduced to £15 on their website.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 08/04/2017 15:16

I would size up!

TheOriginalChatelaine · 08/04/2017 16:03

I'll let you know!

Love them!
I've got the 3 strap salina, Madrid x2 and into my 4th pair of gizehs.
I'd love to find a plaited pair of yara ones.

deaddeadgood · 08/04/2017 17:11

Oo oo. Love the Molinas too.
I have a problem Grin

mrsBeverleygoldberg · 08/04/2017 18:10

I need special insoles from the hospital. Footbed sandals do a similar job so I have to wear them. Not pretty but comfy and my feet don't hurt.

WorknameJimEllis · 08/04/2017 18:13

The saltwater sandals look like something an old dear with massive bunions would wear

KatieScarlett · 08/04/2017 18:17

I see your old favourites AF and I raise you mine Grin

Two pairs here but consider a third! April to October without fail Grin

opinionatedfreak · 08/04/2017 21:21

Mephisto Helen's here, I currently have four colours but there is always room for more.

If you want ugly I raise you my teva sandals!

I do have Birkenstocks at work. In Apple green. Lots of people covet them I have to hide them in my locker when they aren't on my feet.

happypoobum · 08/04/2017 21:23

They rip my feet to shreds Sad

lalaloopyhead · 08/04/2017 21:27

I had 3 pairs, white, patent red and patent black - all Madrid I think. I only really like the ones that have just one strap across. I had started to feel there were a bit ugly last year but it has been so nice to get them out again! They are not the most stylish of footwear lets face it, but my god they are comfy and the white ones are on their fourth summer now and show no sign of wear.

Tanaqui · 09/04/2017 06:46

I'm glad to see some others finding the saltwaters not to their taste- they look like old lady shoes to me! It must depend on age- I had my first birkies in 1990 and I've loved them ever since- that must mean that younger people will see them as middle aged shoes (as I am now!), just like I think the saltwater look
Like what grannies wore in the 70s!
