How do you feel about yourself with and without makeup?

I've worn makeup since I was 13 and I don't feel like 'me' without it . I sometimes feel like 2 different pp tbh as I'd never go out ( except to pop to the local shops, go swimming etc) without it .I am quite pale with blotchy skin, prone to redness and think I look ill without it. However, with well applied make up I can look pretty good!

Wearing make up hasn't harmed my skin as I've always taken it off at night, moisturised etc but my idea of hell would be to be put in a situation where I couldn't wear it as I'd feel ugly and unconfident.

Wondered how other pp feel about their looks with/without make up ?

It may sound strange but I don't wear makeup even though I love experimenting with it at home. I'm very unfortunate with my looks, so I feel ridiculous going out wearing makeup/dressing up as I feel paranoid that people will assume I think I look good when I don't!! Instead I don't wear it and wear plain clothes so I don't stand out. I give off the impression that I'm not fussed about beauty although deep down I love it
I probably haven't explained myself well, sorry if it wasn't clear. Basically, I don't wear makeup because I still look awkward/ugly
I do have very sensitive acne prone skin anyway so I guess it's good that I don't bother

PollyPerky · 03/04/2017 10:34

I look completely different with and without make up.
My skin is good but I'm very pale with purple under eye circles as my skin is translucent. I'm fair so my features have little impact without make up.
I'd never go out with no make up - I could get away with no foundation if I used a good concealer under the eyes, and some blusher.
Most days I do full war paint- foundation, concealer, blusher, eye pencil, eye shadow, mascara and lippie.
I just look ill with no make up and an envious of women with darker and more rosy skin tones who look fine with no make up.

BoboChic · 03/04/2017 10:38

I wear very little make up and tend to wear less as I get older. However, I pay great attention to the state of my skin, my eyelashes are always dyed, my hair is cut/coloured to a very high standard and I always colour/gel my eyebrows: my base look is not entirely au naturel. I wear bronzing powder, a little bronze eyeshadow, a slick of black mascara and some lip liner/lipstick fpr everyday.

Bluntness100 · 03/04/2017 10:52

Basically, I don't wear makeup because I still look awkward/ugly

I'm sure that's not true. Don't be so hard on yourself. No one is ugly, go to a make up counter and have a demonstration. No one, but no one, looks at a woman who wears make up and thinks " oh she's wearing that becasye she thinks she looks good".

Makeup done well should enhance, your skin, your eyes, your lips. I wear the full works, but it really is more skin type colours. For example I recently bought a red lipstick and simply can't wear it, I'm so used to having a nude coloured lip that it just seemed clown like on me, and so noticeable, simply because it was so different.

I went to a lunch party a week ago. I was one of the two eldest in a group of 15 or so. The two of us looked far, far better than the other 13 who were aged between 42 and 48 and trying far too hard to hold onto their lost youth. There comes a time when Rock Chic, heavy make up and long hair is a look that needs to be binned entirely.

sunnytoday · 03/04/2017 10:58

I feel much better without it. Never really been taught how to apply it so it never quite works.

Highmaintenancefemalestuff · 03/04/2017 11:08

I hate how I look with/without. I have redness and acne scarring so cover with foundation everyday, even if I'm not leaving the house. Im embarrassed to say I even wear it when swimming and do everything possible to avoid getting my face wet.
I have yet to find a foundation that suits my skin (it all either looks like it cracks, goes shiny and melt off or rubbish coverage) whenever I run out I buy a different one to try. I'm also crap at doing makeup and only have a full face for special occasions, but I would never go a day without foundation. The one and only time I did everyone commented on how Ill and tired I looked.

usefultoken · 03/04/2017 11:16

I don't really like make up, not really into the polished look, but I do wear foundation daily, and feel it makes a big difference. I can go without if necessary but think I look tired, and just not as pretty. I think the shadows and red areas on my face make a big difference, and the foundation evens it all out, but I still feel like me.
When I was younger I didn't wear any make up.
On a special occasion I might wear some eye liner and a bit of lip gloss, and feel super sexy and glam! I don't feel the need for that daily though!

usefultoken · 03/04/2017 11:18

Oh yes, and everyone thinks I don't wear any makeup, but if I leave off the foundation I will get people asking if I'm OK/I look tired.

InglouriousBasterd · 03/04/2017 11:20

I call it polishing the turd 💩 I look shattered without it.

stevie69 · 03/04/2017 11:34

I don't use makeup. I feel fine without it. I possibly look better with but, as I don't have to look at myself, I'm not concerned about that Blush

HelenaGWells · 03/04/2017 11:35

I don't wear make up and I never have. I feel self conscious in it. I've had my makeup done professionally a couple of times but it just isn't me. I feel awkward and weird. I don't feel like myself.

reallyanotherone · 03/04/2017 11:41

I always read these threads with interest.

The language used- I look tired and ill without it, I look better with it, feel self conscious without, make up enhances...

Then I wonder why men don't wear make up? Do they not look tired and ill without it? look better with it? Wouldn't it just even out the skin tone, a slick of mascara enhance lashes?

I wear more now I'm older. Used to be just mascara and lipstick but these days i look exhausted and miserable unless I do my whole face. I wear too much but it looks better than none.

millifiori · 03/04/2017 12:03

reallyanotherone men aren't ignored or mistreated if they look old and tired. Society 'allows' men to look old and tired. I don't like it, but I'd rather spend five minutes in the morning scrubbing up so I'm wlel treated. And to be fair to men, if they don't shave or regularly trim their facial hair, and keep their hair well cut they get treated like wasters. Whereas we can have long untrimmed hair and no one minds. It's just a different regime expected of them.

Chelsea26 · 03/04/2017 12:04

Me too really

Basically men look fine without make up because we are socially conditioned to accept flaws in male skin.

KikiDeliversCakes · 03/04/2017 12:04

I don't often wear make up. I'm fine about myself without it.

On the few occasions that I'll put on make up, it'll be just a light base, eyebrows, eyeliner and mascara - in my mind I don't look so different made up vs natural, maybe just a bit more "smooth".

However, as Bobo describes herself, I also have a good haircut, take care of my skin, will do my brows most days and might have a slick of lipstick on even without doing a full face. And I'm quite particular about how I dress. So I guess my focus is less just on my face / make up and more on the overall appearance.

KikiDeliversCakes · 03/04/2017 12:06

Also, I have daughters and I don't want to raise them to believe that they are only "presentable" to the world if they have a full face of make up on...

elQuintoConyo · 03/04/2017 12:08

When I'm watching tv and there's a dead body- Bones or CSI or somesuch- i often sigh and think 'i'd love to look as healthy as that without make up'.

I walk the dog barefaced, but ut is early morning in the woods and I hardly ever see anyone. Otherwise I have a bit of foundation on and some lippy to leave the house. I have given up on mascara as it is always always always clumpy as fuck.

Anyone else have invisible and/or blue lips?

PeachyImpeachment · 03/04/2017 12:09

People ask if I am OK without makeup on Hmm

elQuintoConyo · 03/04/2017 12:11

IngloriousBasterd you can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter Grin

lazytuesday · 03/04/2017 12:13

i sometimes go to the shop down the road with no makeup on and i never wear makeup if im not leaving the house.
I do like to wear it though, it makes me feel better. I think its the psychological feeling of being 'ready' if you know what i mean? That ive got up got washed and dressed etc etc...... because its part of a routine i sort of feel slightly like i havent prepared myself for the day properly if i havent done it!

I enjoy the ritual probably more than it benefits the way i look!

I sometimes dont wear it on holiday or just wear mascara if its very very hot as it irritates my skin in the heat.

lazytuesday · 03/04/2017 12:17

Ive got this weird thing about earrings as well ... they make me feel like im 'properly dressed' even if ive just thrown some mismatched clothes on off the floor to go to the shop. I think to myself 'everyone will think you planned your outfit if you have earrings on, no one would ever think that someone in earrings was a weirdo'
So i ALWAYS wear earrings outside. Im loops i know!
