How many coats do you have?

Weird question coming into summer but I'm curious!

I have a regular wool type coat, a trench coat, a parka, a dog walking coat & a blazer.

They're all past their best so next year I'm looking to upgrade but I'm wondering how many I actually need.

Schmoochypoos · 22/03/2017 21:19

I've quite a few,

Black smart wool one from Jigsaw
Tan leather bomber jacket
Khaki parka
Helly Hansen waterproof type jacket
Linen jacket
Denim jacket

I am in search of a flattering black leather jacket for spring, and after summer will be on the look out for a warm long coat for the school run.

Doobigetta · 22/03/2017 21:21

I'm glad it isn't just me.

1 Full length tailored wool for work in winter
2 Wool parka for casual winter
3 Blue fur-lined parka for same
4 Cream faux fur for winter evenings
5 Brown faux fur jacket for same
6 White padded ski jacket for really really cold days
7 Navy trench for work in summer
8 Grey leather biker jacket for casual autumn/spring
9 Brown leather bomber with furry collar not worn much any more
10 Denim jacket for summer casual
11 Unstylish waterproof outdoorsy thing for walking and stuff
12 Navy wool peacoat for mid-season with jeans
13 Pink short trench

That's not as many I thought, actually. Blazers don't count as coats.

Chocolateorangegoblin · 22/03/2017 21:24

Two, one is a maternity coat that I'm keeping just incase.
So one that I wear everyday, waterproof north face type sensible coat. That's it! Can't believe people have so many coats!

InvisibleKittenAttack · 22/03/2017 21:29

erm, a few...

  1. blue wool coat
  2. cream wool coat
  3. black long wool coat (this needs replacing)
  4. black thick padded jacket (for deepest winter only)
  5. grey "rainy day" mac
  6. green waterproof
  7. beige trench
  8. blue denim jacket
  9. pink/orange 'walking' waterproof coat
10. turquoise hooded wool coat (but need to get rid, it's not flattering so never wear it) 11. black leather jacket

Feels like there's others, but reckon that's it...

rightknockered · 22/03/2017 22:21

Two leather biker jackets
One green leather blazer
Two denim jackets
one military style khaki jacket
two black blazers
two velvet blazers
tow navy blazers
One long cream wool coat
One long navy coat
One khaki military style coat
Beige trench
Khaki trench
black trench
two waterproof dog walking coats

rightknockered · 22/03/2017 22:23

Oh gosh, two bomber jackets

Judydreamsofhorses · 22/03/2017 22:34

Quite a few:

Black Whistles leather biker
Grey Warehouse leather biker
Navy Oasis 70s style leather blazer
ASOS leopard faux fur
Calf length Whistles faux fur
Short Warehouse teddy faux fur
M&S olive wool peacoat
ASOS orange wool peacoat
Whistles grey tweed wool coat
New Look long grey wool-ish coat
Whistles parka
Topshop green duster coat
New Look long camel trench
Topshop denim jacket
Warehouse boucle boyfriend jacket
Topshop checked duster coat

I tend to buy one each winter/spring and then keep them for years. Some of these are 15 years old. Fortunately we have a massive "coat cupboard" in the hall. (DP has three - a big North Face parka, a smart wool peacoat, and a light summer jacket with a hood.)

BeastofCraggyIsland · 22/03/2017 22:52

Oh lots, but I am obsessed with outdoor clothing, particularly coats. I do wear them - we do a lot of adventure-type travelling, rock climbing, ice climbing, skiing etc. but I could probably get away with about half the number that I actually have. Combined cost somewhere in the region of £3000 Blush Collection stands at:

3 down jackets
2 synthetic belay jackets
2 Gore-Tex Pro shells
3 softshells
2 ski coats (waterproof and insulated)
2 lightweight windstopper/running jackets
1 lightweight waterproof
1 down gilet

None are North Face though Grin I don't rate their gear at all. They're all Arc'teryx, Patagonia, Rab or Mountain Equipment.

Apart from those I have one Barbour jacket, one denim jacket, one smart black wool coat, one heavy, tweed shooting coat, a couple of blazers (black and navy) and one sort of smart quilted bomber jacket type thing from Zara that was an impulse buy and I've worn twice.

Sabsy1 · 22/03/2017 22:55
  1. The north face jacket, for walks when it's freezing cold
  2. Superdry, casual thin jacket
  3. Benneton, simple winter jacket
  4. Next, formal black coat
  5. M&s, formal red coat
  6. Karen millen, luxury formal coat for special occasions
  7. Julian Mcdonald, biker leather jacket
  8. M&s white denim jacket
  9. Long waterproof coat

I actually use all of them for different occasions (depending on temperature) throughout the winter.

JaceLancs · 22/03/2017 22:59

30-40
Includes things like leather jackets but not suit type jackets or blazers

Mrs9C · 22/03/2017 23:56

I used to only have one, a Joules quilted one, which I wore for 3 winters solid, washing it on days I didn't go out. Then for some reason I went out and bought all the jackets over the following year, almost to make up for that 'one' jacket. I now have

  • around 3 coats, 2 are Primark, one is Ness
  • 2 leather jackets, both superdry
  • seasalt rain jacket
  • ness raincoat (useless thing it is as well)
  • 4 blazers, 2 Joules, 2 Ness
  • 2 puffer jackets
  • a didriksons coat for winter beaches/dog walking
  • a coatigan, most recent purchase.

I've probably missed some out, though my original Joules hardly gets a look in. I still only mostly wear one jacket now, a feather down puffer jacket. Going from 1 to 15 was a bit of an unnecessary jump. I still find myself pining after jackets and coats on an ongoing basis!

Mrs9C · 22/03/2017 23:57

Forgot my denim jacket and another Primark coat in that mix, make that 17, and counting... I can see a number of others in my wardrobe that I just haven't worn, must charity shop them.

BestIsWest · 23/03/2017 05:58

I have

Green velvety sixties style coat (my all time favourite coat)
Pea green pea coat.
Light greeny short trench.
Greeny blue velvet jacket (bit of a green thing going on here)
Green parka
Grey parka
Navy quilted jacket
Another quilted jacket
Navy Waterproof
Blue 3 in one waterproof
Black soft shell
Burgundy biker.
Lightweight cream jacket
Linen navy longer biker style jacket
Various blazers

I don't have the perfect coat for commuting at this time of year though which would be somewhere between the grey parka and the trench.

usefultoken · 23/03/2017 06:05
  1. 2 cotton summer/spring type coats, 1 smartish, 1 more casual, It's a bench one I've had for about 15 years and us falling apart. 2 winter ones, 1 smartish wool, and 1 big duvet type thing. Ooh, actually it's 5 as I also have a rain mac.

MirandaWest · 23/03/2017 06:20
  1. Winter coat and summer coat.
silkpyjamasallday · 23/03/2017 07:33

So many, I love coats and just can't resist buying something 'practical' I recently had a cull as so many had not been worn for years, the remaining favourite are :

3 vintage fur coats
Aquascutum camel coat
All saints wool with leather sleeves
Fur trim reclaimed army parka
Isabel marant tweedy coat
Barbour wax shooting jacket
White denim jacket
4 black leather bikers

But reading all your lists has reminded me I need a smart waterproof trench coat...

Floisme · 23/03/2017 07:38

Around 20. About half are vintage and I've had some of them 20-30 years. Coats and jackets are my thing. I love the way you can look like crap then throw one on and feel like Jackie Kennedy. They're the best reason I know for living in the UK.

Knee length Al Pacino leather coat (my favourite at the moment)
2 wool coats
Bad weather coat (Hate it but can't find a replacement - tune in this autumn for next installment)
2 lightweight coats (both vintage - one has a Paris label)
Trenchcoat (useless piece of crap - why they're a classic I will never know)
3 Harris tweed jackets (two of them vintage)
2 knock-off Barbour jackets
Leather bomber jacket
Fake leather biker jacket
Wedding / occasion coat (in a light wool crepe. Best thing Boden ever did - I sometimes keep it on all night)
3 velvet 'opera coats' (vintage)
Fake fur jacket
Denim jacket
There may be a couple more
That's not counting blazers and tailored jackets.

BigGreenOlives · 23/03/2017 07:44

Beargrillthus · 23/03/2017 15:06

I live in a cold place and feel the cold and commute by foot/bike/public transport so about 10-15.

Coat is both needed and "on show" most if the year so makes sense to have some variety and different kinds for different events and outfits ( eg two full length formal ones for nights at the theatre, a Barbour for rain, puffer for walking and commute, and tweedy for everyday errands)

I think I'd cut down if I lived somewhere warmer or drive everywhere. But love em all for now

Aoibhe · 23/03/2017 15:10

Black winter coat
2 light smart knee length
Plum regatta for walking
Several blazers

I recently got rid of white, cream, grey, red. I think they were all from h&m over the years.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 23/03/2017 15:23

a parka type coat - newish for winter wear
a cardigan Anden style from 2006 - spring, summer, autumn

Really thick cream faux fur coat
Leopard faux fur jacket
All saints leather jacket
Distressed denim jacket

Red cropped puffa jacket
Short tweed coat
Long musto rainproof coat/parka
Some hideous khaki puffa coat with fur collar round the hood (my mother made me buy it- it makes me feel really frumpy)

A too small embroidered black cotton jacket
Vintage black Boucle jacket with brass buttons
A real fur coat that was my nanas that I don't wear but can't get rid of
