Honest opinions - is this wedding dress tacky???

I had always imagined getting married in a very simple column dress (well in fact I had never really imagined getting married... but if I had bothered to think it would have been of a very simple dress). However DF proposed when I was 39 weeks pregnant and wants a big white wedding with all the trimmings. As a result I had to go dress shopping 10 weeks after having DD - when I was 1.5 stone overweight. I ended up with this dress as it has a very effective corsett and is structured and holds me in. In retrospect I really regret it as I think the dress is very tacky. I was just distracted by the reappearance of my waist when I tried it on. What do you think? If the consensus is tacky then I may change into a nice normal dress for the reception.

um - it is traditional but not tacky. Not my taste but I wouldn't look at it and say tacky! - if you can carry it off and you like it go for it. If you are not happy change if you can - you are only going to do this once (maybe)

gorgonzolasouffle · 03/03/2007 09:42

I think it looks lovely and not tacky at all.

How thin is the model who is wearing it though? Ridiculous!!

When are you getting married?

MrsBadger · 03/03/2007 09:42

nah, keep it on, though you may want to arrange to loop the train up.
No-one'll bat an eyelid at what you perceive as 'tackiness' - it's a wedding!

oranges · 03/03/2007 09:43

why is that tacky? I think its lovely. Really, really beautiful (though would look better on someone a bit, em, curvier than that model)

gorgonzolasouffle · 03/03/2007 09:44

Altough it isnt tacky, I do agree with DimpledThighs. If you are not 100% happy with it then change it asap.

I changed my mind when I had bought my wedding dress. I bought a huge gold thing and only when I got home did I think maybe i would look like Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I was able to change it for an ivory one and am so glad I did!

Carmenere · 03/03/2007 09:46

I like it, it's not tacky but if you are not happy with it change it.

shonaspurtle · 03/03/2007 09:46

Not tacky at all. You'll look gorgeous I'm sure.

Just keep everything else (accessories etc) really simple maybe?

yomellamoHelly · 03/03/2007 09:46

I think it's beautiful. Keep your jewellery/hair/makeup simple and you'll look fab.
Had quite a similar skirt on my wedding dress to which I had ties fitted (to the under-side) so I could hoik it up out the way for the reception - so no-one would tread on it and so I could dance/move around without tripping up. Was a well-advised alteration, especially since I'm always in jeans and not the most elegant of people.
I wonder if maybe some of your concern is because you're not used to wearing anything like this? In theory you only get married once and you're most likely not ever going to attend the oscars so this is your one chance to wear a dress like this, so enjoy the attention you'll get I say. You just need a baby-sick avoidance strategy in place in advance.
Enjoy your day.

PeachesMcLean · 03/03/2007 09:48

I don't think it's tacky at all. Quite elegant actually.
My only thought was that it doesn't look very comfy - a bit low around the boobs perhaps, but if you can wear it without falling out then there's no problem!

winniepoo · 03/03/2007 09:53

It's beautiful so long as you have the figure to carry it off iykwim! If your a chunky monkey then it might not look so nice!

NuttyMuffins · 03/03/2007 09:55

It is lovely not tacky at all IMO.

FantasticDaisyArtichoke · 03/03/2007 09:55

Thanks for your opinions. It is good to know that everyone did not immediatley scream "yuk" and refuse to reply to someone with such awful taste. I think I am just feeling very sensitive about my looks post baby.

And don't worry - you can all rest assured I am curvier than that model.

I just worry about the detail on it and the size of the train. And it is quite heavy. I guess my normal uniform is skinny trousers/jeans, a shirt and boots - so I feel quite self concious in a dress like that. I am very tempted to buy a nice light dress from somewhere like Reiss or Ghost and wear that in the evening - but can't really afford that as well.

Unfortunately I have no chance to change it as it is already made and the wedding is on May 5th. The shop have made it clear there is no chance of a refund or exchange.

At first I wasn't going to wear a veil or tiara either but I have to admit that when I tried them on in the shop they completed the bride look. What do people think of tiaras?
