Honest opinions - is this wedding dress tacky???

I had always imagined getting married in a very simple column dress (well in fact I had never really imagined getting married... but if I had bothered to think it would have been of a very simple dress). However DF proposed when I was 39 weeks pregnant and wants a big white wedding with all the trimmings. As a result I had to go dress shopping 10 weeks after having DD - when I was 1.5 stone overweight. I ended up with this dress as it has a very effective corsett and is structured and holds me in. In retrospect I really regret it as I think the dress is very tacky. I was just distracted by the reappearance of my waist when I tried it on. What do you think? If the consensus is tacky then I may change into a nice normal dress for the reception.

Actually those corsetty dresses look much better on curves than skinnymalinks - I tried on a few as a small-norked size 10 and I looked ridiculous - all bony and disproportionate.

MrsBadger · 03/03/2007 09:58

tbh with that dress I wouldn't wear either a veil or a tiara - I wore neither but unlike you when I tried them on I saw 'little girl dressing up' not 'complete bride' so I think I just didn't suit them.

Def get a dressmkaer to arrange a way to bustle up the train for the evening though.

codswallop · 03/03/2007 10:00

i hate strapelss dresses
cliched

codswallop · 03/03/2007 10:00

if you haev fat arms or are over a size 12 fdo not attempt

FantasticDaisyArtichoke · 03/03/2007 10:02

Hmmm - thanks Cod. At least that is honest. Have you tried finding a nice dress with sleeves under £1000? I tried and failed.

Thankfully I am finally back to size 12 and I have a wrap to cover my shoulders and arms in the church (and possibly later).

Do I take it you would change for the reception?

shonaspurtle · 03/03/2007 10:05

Awww don't faff about changing for the reception. Seriously, this is all a big deal in your head now but by the time it actually comes to the day you'll be having such a laugh or be all overcome with the occasion you really won't care.

codswallop · 03/03/2007 10:05

i got mine made
imported silk
total cost £120

Cloudhopper · 03/03/2007 10:13

I have to say that I have seen some very large women look amazing in strapless dresses. I would say that they make the most of your hour glass figure. If you are anywhere near a size 12 then you will be absolutely fine.

I think that dress is lovely! And if it looked flattering when you were bigger then it will surely look even better now you have shed some more weight.

Unless you are very rich, I wouldn't be buying another one. It is only a day, and I am sure you could think of better ways to spend a thousand pounds.

SSShakeTheChi · 03/03/2007 10:22

If you're willing to spend the money, get something different you feel more comfortable with for the reception. Why not? You'd be able to wear it again, wouldn't you? I wouldn't like to sit down and eat in a corset or dance in a strapless dress. You'll want to feel relaxed and beautiful and enjoy yourself.

I don't find the dress tacky. I wouldn't have chosen it for myself.

What would you like to have on at the reception?

TinyGang · 03/03/2007 10:24

It's a gorgeous dress - no way is it tacky!

Mine was similar - with sleeves though as it happens. I'd choose it again

Budababe · 03/03/2007 10:28

I think it is lovely - and as you are a 12 it should look great. Would keep everything else really simple though.

It's one day where you deserve to feel like a princess.

fireflyfairy2 · 03/03/2007 10:29

Beautiful dress!!!!

A bit low round the boobs perhaps, but maybe yours isn't like that?

A wrap would be lovely with it too!

FantasticDaisyArtichoke · 03/03/2007 11:32

Thanks for all your reassurance. Sorry I disappeared - DD rolled under the sofa and upset herself...

I might just take a peak in a few nice high street shops for reception outfits that could double as my smart evening wear for the rest of the year. BUT you have made me feel better and I will take on board the advice to keep everything else simple.

Now I am off to the gym to consolidate that size 12 measurement.

I quite like it but it is VERY revealing - personally I would feel a bit exposed. The silk wrap idea is nice though

noddyholder · 03/03/2007 11:56

Gorgeous I love strapless it looks really elegant but you do need good shoulders and boobs

StrangeTown · 03/03/2007 12:02

I'm generally with cod on the sleeve thing, but they are so hard to find...this dress is not tacky, it's a lovely colour, very flattering.
If you do go with the veil, this will also give you some upper arm coverage - you won't feel so generally exposed. You can take it off later when the champagne has kicked in and you couldn't care less.
Tbh, I think lots of people have doubts about the dress and this point, I know I hated mine, but when everything comes together on the day, you'll remember why you loved it in the first place.

codswallop · 03/03/2007 13:28

mine ( admittedly 10 yeas ago) was htis kind of HSAPE very comfy
nto tlalt he crap aroudn the top htogh

codswallop · 03/03/2007 13:28

ooh this FAR More glam imo

codswallop · 03/03/2007 13:32

you dont need her viky pollard hair do though

belgo · 03/03/2007 13:36

It is tacky. It's far too exposed for a wedding.

Prefer the ones codswallop has linked to.

Gobbledigook · 03/03/2007 13:36

Hmmm, I'm with cod - I don't like strapless wedding dresses at all. I also don't like that lace up thing at the back - loads of people go for those and I think they are naff. Also, too much detail on it for me.

But I'm a simple gal - Like simple, plain stuff rather than beads and sequins.

If you've already got it I wouldn't change it - you probably look lovely in it and if you like it that's really all that matters. YOu can't expect everyone to like what you choose so choose what you like!

codswallop · 03/03/2007 13:36

hhm

codswallop · 03/03/2007 13:37
