  • flattering for (and taking advantage of) a large bust - ideally v-neck with a bit of cleavage.
  • suitable for a proper supportive bra to go underneath and be concealed (no spaghetti straps, halternecks and not strapless).
  • ideally strong jewel coloured (emerald green, red, cobalt blue, type colours but open to black or cream if dress is great).
  • budget: anywhere up to £300 but cheaper is better.
  • elegant, classic in style and not trashy (no Gypsy wedding chiffon flounces!)

What do you think of this, as much to give a more detailed steer as anything...

cobalt

Have a look at people like Adrianna Papell or Gina Bacconni via House of Fraser website to start with. I find Coast to small round the bust (I'm a G cup) and if I go up a dress size for that I then find it hangs off my hips! At that sort of price I would be very tempted to find someone to make you a dress to fit you though, tbh - see what style you think suits you and take pictures.

boobyooby · 02/02/2017 17:02

Ooooh, very nice sleepwhenidie .... think I might have to forget the ironing tonight and have a look through :)

sanitygirl · 02/02/2017 17:04

How about this one from Reiss - comes in red or dark blue

I like the colour sleepwhenidie but I wanted something with a neckline that shows off my assets as it were!

How about the Lindy Bop dresses? I wore a black satin one recently to a ball, very flattering round the chest/waist, not pricey at all.

AutumnalLeafs · 02/02/2017 17:21

I'm not a big LindyBop style fan tbh. I think that sort of dress only really suits women who have a forties style look about them if you know what I mean. Bright red lipstick which isn't my style.

Plus the flared skirt would make me look enormous!

Have you tried Saint Bustier? Loads of stuff there designed to be flattering for busty women.

AutumnalLeafs · 02/02/2017 17:34

Thanks jessplus - no I'd not heard of them and have checked them out! Great find but nothing for what I'm looking for now - dresses are not evening-y enough. I will definitely get stuff from them in future though - really flattering cuts there.

What size are you?

This is in the sale in size 6,8,12 or 16.

AutumnalLeafs · 02/02/2017 17:47

Very variable Prof.

Generally a 14 - 16 for the bust but sometimes a 12 on the bottom.

I like that dress btw Prof - thanks. I'm inclining more towards something long as its for a very formal dinner. I could probably get away with a cocktail dress just about so I will keep that one in mind.

ProfAnnieT · 02/02/2017 18:14

Longer, with side detail?

Either of these any good? I'm trying to find one on JL that I tried on last year but was so dressy for my occasion. It took a dress size off me.

JJBlinks · 02/02/2017 18:16

Agree that Adrianna Papell def worth a look - stocked in House of Fraser and John Lewis. I've worn a lot of her dresses and am about the same as you size wise. I find that there a lot of dresses that have necklines which mean you can wear a proper bra!!

It was this in navy and was so flattering.

ProfAnnieT · 02/02/2017 18:25

This one is quite similar to one of the ones you posted earlier Emerald long dress

margaritasbythesea · 02/02/2017 18:48

I was looking at this today which I thought looked nice. Depends if simple is your style. I know it's not the colour you wanted.

GuinefortGrey · 02/02/2017 19:03

Clicked on the John Lewis links above and it made me chuckle to see the pop - up "10 people are looking at this right now". How many Mnetters I wonder Grin

Laska5772 · 02/02/2017 19:14

I have this Biba dress - Mine is more of a Colbalt blue , but HOF have other colours and black .This grey/lilac is nice. Its flattering, gorgeous and easy to wear (and dress up with lovely jewellery as its such a simple timeless style) -

Best evening gown ever, I think! (and this one is on sale! ) While you are there have a look at their other offerings!

Laska5772 · 02/02/2017 19:20

How about this Phase eight green dress? they have it in 16 and only £55! (reduced from £189!)

UncomfortableBadger · 02/02/2017 20:02

I've posted about this dress on here many many times, but I luffs it Grin

Ideal for those who are large of nork, in need of a proper bra

AutumnalLeafs · 02/02/2017 22:00

Ha! I knew you'd save me. You MNers are genuis!

I will look through these in more detail tomorrow but on a quick look - so far
I'm loving the Ariella Ray and the Adrianna and the Tahari in emerald green.

In fact I'm coming round to emerald green more as a colour. Is that a bad colour for evening wear do you think? Is it too St Patrick's day?
