Coats - settle a disagreement for me!

Hi everyone, I hope you can help me settle a long running disagreement. You know when you buy a new coat and the pleat/opening whatever it's called at the back is sewn together with a stitch, you're meant to unpick that right? I see so many people with the stitch still in and it looks odd to me, but my friend is adamant that's supposed to stay. Am I making sense?

Don't even get me started on those 'with cashmere' labels people sometimes leave sewn on the sleeves. Wink

Thanks!

Of course you unpick it, otherwise you have to take pigeon steps everywhere!

Soubriquet · 06/01/2017 20:32

Ah the funeral style woollen coats

No I don't wear that style at all

blankmind · 06/01/2017 20:34

Pic for people who haven't seen a vent-tack

80's girl here. Please for the love of christ remove the perforated size label from the back of your Levis. Nowt worse than it flapping about, with written proof of your waist and leg measurements on it.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 06/01/2017 20:47

What coats are these? Either I've never seen a coat where you need to do this, or I've been coat-ing all wrong my whole life.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 06/01/2017 20:48

Oh right that'll teach me to read the full thread first.

I'm still none the wiser

Ginkypig · 06/01/2017 20:55

Thanks blank!

Now I know what everyone is talking about.

Of course you unstitch it, unless of course your arse is too big for it and the vent gently frames your crack like one of mine. I hadn't noticed untill I was in a changing room 6 months after I started wearing the bloody thing Blush

BattleaxeGalactica · 06/01/2017 21:04

Looks like a consensus and I'm happy to join it.

Who have you been arguing with, OP?!

Purplepicnic · 06/01/2017 21:10

When I lived in London, I saw so many people on the tube escalators with the white labels still on the bottom of their shoes, I started to wonder if I'd been doing wrong all my life taking them off.

MrsKoala · 06/01/2017 21:11

I also never unpick pockets. Otherwise its too tempting to put stuff in them and look all lumpy. I like a smooth line.

The not unpicking is baffling but not as much as people who don't remove the white stickers from the soles of their shoes. I hate seeing that flash of white as they walk in front of me.

ShootingQuadrantids · 06/01/2017 22:22

My DM used to say that only 'ladies of the night' have their fee stuck to the soles of their shoes! I now always make sure that the white sticker is removed before wearing!

OutToGetYou · 06/01/2017 23:11

Yes, for the slit.

I leave pockets in suit jackets though, stops me putting stuff in them which makes them gape and spoils the line.

Kankan44 · 06/01/2017 23:13

My dads been a tailor for 65 yrs. the tacking stitches are only there to hold the line of any garment in place until brought. The vent stitches come straight out, but the pockets can be left in if you want to keep the line of the garment correct for as long as possible.

RockyBird · 07/01/2017 08:09

I leave pockets stitched to stop me using them.

I unpick vents though and always get DH to remove the labels from my shoes.

fluffypigs · 07/01/2017 08:36

I will be showing the thread to my friend and insisting she unpick her vents immediately Wink

Thanks for the picture Blank, much better than my description!

I'm a retired dry cleaner , the amount of people that use to have the sleeve label on their jackets is quite funny . I was often offering to snip if for them as it was just there for the shop etc but I was quite often told off ! Loads of people left the stitches in coats and jackets !!

frizzfactor · 07/01/2017 13:37

Sales assistants in clothes shops often wear the clothes to 'advertise' them. Hence leaving sleeve labels etc on.

I get irrationally annoyed by vent tacks too. I also leave the pocket tacks in though for the line.

Although my gigantic boobs fuck that up anyway!!

Handbaghag · 07/01/2017 14:10

As a teacher I see lots of y7 boys at the start of the year with the 2 vents at the back of their blazer still with the big cross stitch in to keep them closed when in the shop 😁

Fuckityhi · 07/01/2017 15:48

BIL had his sleeve label on his suit on his wedding day. I told him he needed to remove it but he wouldn't let me. He said how would people know how expensive his suit was if they couldn't see the brand. Hmm

CointreauVersial · 07/01/2017 17:14

Ha! That's a coincidence - I was reading this blog post a couple of days ago, and noticed on the back-view picture that she's forgotten to unpick the stitch at the bottom of the pleat!

It makes the coat hang very strangely. I wonder if she realises?

WeeM · 07/01/2017 17:21

Omg I am so glad I'm not the only person that is annoyed by this! I see folk all the time walking around with it still sewn up-it does my head in!

goinglocomoto · 07/01/2017 18:28

Just gone out for the night with new coat. Didn't unpick the pockets. The regret is strong.

CointreauVersial · 07/01/2017 19:02

Ah well, pockets, you can be forgiven, goinglocomoto. If you don't unpick the pockets you often make a coat look better, not worse (see also trousers and skirts).

But the tack at the back? Noooo.
