Coats - settle a disagreement for me!

Hi everyone, I hope you can help me settle a long running disagreement. You know when you buy a new coat and the pleat/opening whatever it's called at the back is sewn together with a stitch, you're meant to unpick that right? I see so many people with the stitch still in and it looks odd to me, but my friend is adamant that's supposed to stay. Am I making sense?

Don't even get me started on those 'with cashmere' labels people sometimes leave sewn on the sleeves. Wink

Thanks!

The vent needs to be opened so that you can walk but I never unpick the pockets of a new 'good' coat until it's being relegated to an 'old' coat. It stops me putting junk in the pockets and ruining the line.

I do this too!

ShimmeringIce · 06/01/2017 09:33

Does everyone know you're meant to remove the shaped 'genuine leather' tag from bags and shoes too? I've seen quite a few people walking around with them flapping about Shock
Take the bloody labels off the bottom of your shoes, too!

Sorry, as you were....

WhereAreWeNow · 06/01/2017 09:37

Yes to all of this! I was walking behind a woman on the tube yesterday wondering why she'd left the stitch in the vent of what looked like a lovely new coat. And I often wonder why people have the "genuine leather" labels still attached to bags and the stickers on the soles of their shoes. Glad I'm not the only one feeling unreasonably irritated by these things :)

Muppetslikecoco · 06/01/2017 09:43

Is this an expensive coat thing? I've never seen this stitch on a coat.

fluffypigs · 06/01/2017 09:46

Oh yes to the leather tags too! Wow, I've opened up a can of worms here Grin

men hadn't removed the sleeve labels on suit jackets, bizarre.

I've seen that loads. Is it a thing these days?

Soubriquet · 06/01/2017 19:15

Glad it's not just me muppets

I actually have no idea what people are talking about

CurriedEggs · 06/01/2017 19:15

What are sleeve labels?

Mooey89 · 06/01/2017 19:21

I have never ever heard of this. I've never owned a coat costing more than about £60 though - is that why?? Or am I walking around with an illegal stitch?!

Givemestrengthorwine · 06/01/2017 19:28

Weren't sleeve labels a proper design feature about 10 years ago?

Sticky labels on the bottom of shoes!!!!!!

Mothers of kids with new school blazers - please take the stitch out of the blazers and pockets! Kids are unziping the zip on the inside of the blazer, that is there to allow a tailor easy access for any repairs, and not a giant pocket for pens and books!!!!! 😂

neveradullmoment99 · 06/01/2017 19:29

I have never seen someone with a sleeve label or indeed had a jacket with one stitched on except for a cardboard one with size/price that clearly is meant to be removed. Surely that is not what is meant by sleeve label???

1horatio · 06/01/2017 19:37

Yes!! Unpick.

Idk why, but I get really annoyed when people don't do that. Especially if it's a beautiful coat/jacket.

ijustwannadance · 06/01/2017 19:37

I don't unpick pockets on nice wool type coats either.

Ginkypig · 06/01/2017 19:42

Where on a coat? Iv never heard of this.

FinnMcCool · 06/01/2017 19:44

Embarrassingly I had to sew a vent up on one of my jackets. It fitted fine from the front, even a bit loose. DH confirmed it looked good, the swine! I was happy swanking about in my new jacket. Unfortunately when I checked the back view, one day at home, my huge arse was protuding through the jacket vent which had parted like a pair of curtains! Arrrrgh!!! Blush

TentUpFirstBunkUpLater · 06/01/2017 19:52

Aah well, the one thing I don't do is unpick outside pockets. If you put shite in those pockets it can ruin the line.

Inside pockets are fair game and I also cut the stitch on a split

Thisisfourty · 06/01/2017 19:53

Yes ofcourse it needs picking, same as picking the stitching on the pocket openings !!!

HardcoreLadyType · 06/01/2017 19:57

No

ClashCityRocker · 06/01/2017 19:57

Ah.

I've just realised my work suit does have pockets and they aren't just there for decoration.....

How useful.

My DM & DF recently attended the wedding of some good friends at a nice boutique style hotel, it was a small wedding but the bride & groom had put a lot of effort into all the little details and it looked amazing. They walked into the hotel and first person they saw was the Groom at hotel reception going through a few details. His back was to them and Dm said she thought how lovely he looked - until she saw the vent of his very expensive suit still tacked together Grin she rushed over and had a quiet word. The photographer turned and took a few shots, just as DM was peering closely at the Groom's bottom Grin can't wait to see those photos!

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 06/01/2017 20:00

I once told someone on the train! ... they just looked at me as if I was insane and scuttled off.

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 06/01/2017 20:01

You get them on full length wool coats, the kind my mother used to call 'funeral coats', maybe you don't wear that style?

DagenhamRoundhouse · 06/01/2017 20:17

Another annoyance is when people don't remove the white price label from underneath their shoes. I know this is often a wedding day joke but if people ascend stairs ahead of you, you can often see labels still stuck on, all grubby and tattered! Don't people realise?

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 06/01/2017 20:30

Much mirth over simple subject, reminds of the those tags sewn onto shirts visible, with care instructions, DH thinks they are supposed to be there and wont let me take them off Xmas Grin
