Is this an impossible ask? Black dress for mid thirty year old, hourglass figure

I want a flattering dress that doesn't make me look like mutton dressed as lamb but also that I wouldn't find in my mum'a wardrobe. I'm an hourglass figure so short shift-type dresses make me look like a sack of potatoes. Please help!

Missguided is good for hourglass dresses.

ILOVEKISSINGSANTACLAUS · 10/12/2016 14:22

Shamelessly place mark

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 10/12/2016 14:35

I bought this the other day - it is very flattering on and just long enough not to be mutton dressed as lamb

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 10/12/2016 14:38

(and it's as cheap as chips)

imjessie · 10/12/2016 14:41

I got this yesterday and am
Size 10 hourglass . I'm 42 and I think it looks nice .. I bought the new look one above but it was very going even with a stitch . I am going out with a group of men and women and felt it too much .

imjessie · 10/12/2016 14:42

Lipsy are good for hourglass too

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/12/2016 14:44

What's your budget? Do you want something cheap for a few wears, or something that you could potentially get several years of wear out of? If the latter, I'd have a look at Vivienne Westwood.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/12/2016 14:49

Velvet

Mint Velvet so expensive for the quality but I like this

Pretty

PacificDogwod · 10/12/2016 14:52

Oh, what's your budget?
Are you likely to wear the dress again?

St Bustier is great for hourglass figures.

DianaMitford · 10/12/2016 15:00

Vivian of Holloway. Gorgeous dresses!

Uhohmummy · 10/12/2016 16:52

Oh wow - thanks for the replies!
Budget is moderate - I'm looking for a dress that's hopefully going to last more than a season so would be happy to pay for quality. Also I find as I get older cheap things tend to look it on me.
Love some of the choices above - I'm tall though and don't like my thighs very much so the short ones, while lovely, won't work. Will check out Vivienne Westwood - thanks. Also I found this which I like the shape of - any thoughts?

Not seen irl but this looks nice and isn't short.

Uhohmummy · 10/12/2016 17:04

Thanks Remus - like that one and I think t would be flattering too. I would really like something a bit more special and evening-y though. Sorry, I don't mean to drip feed.
LOVE the look of this which is a bit over budget- www.matchesfashion.com/products/Vivienne-Westwood-Anglomania-Vian-asymmetric-draped-jersey-dress-1071558

Does anything here appeal? - love a bit of Westwood, and she is the queen of draping, but usually have to settle for more high street prices. Ah well.
Baukjen quality is fab, the jersey dressed are double layer, so the inner layer kind of holds lumps and bumps in, and the outer layer looks slinky.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/12/2016 18:00

I like this. Reminds me of my Goth days!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/12/2016 18:02

Too short? I love it!

Uhohmummy · 10/12/2016 19:33

Yes that Whistles one is way too short sadly (I'm 5'8") - it's lovely.
I haven't looked at Baukjen for ages. I'm not keen on any of the current stuff but saw this in the sales section and really like it - do you think it would work for a Christmas party?

OP that Vivienne Westwood dress is absolutely gorgeous. I imagine it will be exceptionally flattering for your shape and heoght.

All Saints often have dresses of a similar cut too, so might be worth a look.

WhooooAmI24601 · 11/12/2016 08:43

French Connection is my go-to for dresses these days. They seem to cut for women with a bust, which I love, and their sale stuff is actually pretty decent.

WidowWadman · 11/12/2016 08:51

I'm hour-glassy and just picked up this one, very flattering www.dorothyperkins.com/en/dpuk/product/dresses-5699972/womens-dresses-5686813/black-fit-and-flare-velour-bardot-dress-5936138?bi=82&ps=20

Monsoon had a few good choices and I got this one:

Gosh that allsaints model is very thin.

LOVE the Vivienne Westwood dress. You'd definitely get more than one season out of it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/12/2016 11:14

That All Saints one is beautiful, but only for the v small of chest.
