Will someone explain Jane Norman to me?

Not one of my usual shops, but nipped in because I liked the colour of something.

Is it a teenage shop? It felt like it, and looked like it. Also had crap changing rooms, and sizes were quite small. All this would indicate a crap, cheap shop.

Buuuuuuut, prices expensive, more like Next or Principles. Why am I confused, will someone expain to me?

very much a teeny shop - some nice stuff but only good on girls size

MoosMa · 13/02/2007 21:04

Oooh, I always thought it looked a bit grown up. There's a little one in our Debenhams and I've only bought one thing (a dress which is a bit posher than the stuff I normally wear).

brimfull · 13/02/2007 21:08

teens love this shop but it can be quite tarty and expensive.
Most teens just want the plastic bag

granarybeck · 13/02/2007 21:10

I always thought Jane Norman was quite a grown up bit in Debenhams but a shop has opened near us in St Albans and is quite young. There are some nice bits in though.

TLV · 13/02/2007 21:14

material of the clothes is shite imo and it is expensive, i used to be able to wear clothes from there about 5yr ago, great to wear if you are a size 8 and yep the colours are great too

SueW · 13/02/2007 21:17

How timely. Spotted this online this weekend.

fizzbuzz · 14/02/2007 10:54

Well, thanks for all that...seems v expensive for average teenager, they must have loads of money these days!

When I was young we had to make do with C&A's sale!

ghastly IME - everything is too short, too tight, too low cut or just too obvious for me (and I am no Bodenite).

Think the Times article is spot on.

NbgsYellowFeathers · 14/02/2007 11:03

Grim grim grim.
Its like a mixture between Morgan and Select.

In fact I think MrsB got the right word for it.

Ghastly.

mosschops30 · 14/02/2007 11:11

Not my thing (and I love places like Topshop/Miss Selfridge and Oasis) Jane Norman screams cheap and teenagers.

I have a 40 year old friend who shops there and always looks like she's wearing her daughters clothes, she buys stuff that she thinks is in fashion rather than what looks good on her

Limbodancer · 14/02/2007 11:18

Crap and naff. My dd does have the must have school bag with Jane Norman all over it from there and a make-up bag again adorned with Jane Norman which she uses as a pencil case. It is just not cool unless you have a Jane Norman carrier bag - and she is only 8!

nappyaddict · 14/02/2007 11:19

i like jane norman although i am 18, but my mum also gets stuff from there and shes 49.

housemum · 14/02/2007 11:43

Somehow I missed it - when a teenager at school would drool longingly at Jane Norman but couldn't afford it and it was more aimed at the early 20's. Started job, bought first house - couldn't afford it though would have suited it. First kid mid 20's - could afford it but couldn't fit into it! Fast forward to am now in 30's and look like mutton when I try anything on! Did I blink and miss the "moment"?

(Saw a lovely V-neck crossed-over top in there, just my colours, fitted perfectly except that if you moved (you know, like breathing) your puppies were on display (which is never a good move in a late-30's owner of 2 kids!!!)

Emskilou · 14/02/2007 11:46

I like it and have bought some bits from there recently and they have been fabulous to wash and wear

monkeymonkeymoomoo · 14/02/2007 11:49

Ah NappyAddict - but you are beautiful and would look good in a sack I'm 30 and more 'wobbly'

Can't believe you are only 18, you come across so wise!

monkeymonkeymoomoo · 14/02/2007 11:50

(Sorry NA that sounded really patronising!)

margo1974 · 14/02/2007 11:54

I bought a dress there once (I was about 16 and as skinny as a rake, oh if you could see me now!)

I saved up my Saturday job money for our school leavers ball, a whole months wages went on buying it (it cost £40 AND it was half price)

That was in 1991 - I probably couldn't get my leg into one of their boob tubes

nappyaddict · 14/02/2007 11:54

not patronising at all why would you think that? and why you think i am wise i've no idea!!

mosschops30 · 14/02/2007 11:55

perhaps Jane Norman is todays version of Chelsea Girl

monkeymonkeymoomoo · 14/02/2007 11:58

NA - seen some of your other posts and it always sounds like you have your head screwed on the right way IYKWIM!

nappyaddict · 14/02/2007 11:59

oh and monkey iv seen your photo you are slim and beautiful too ... i also have wobbly bits, i disguise them well!!

if mn would allow me to put a naked picture on here you would not find me attractive .. honest.

VoodooWizbit · 14/02/2007 12:00

erm....slut clothes

nappyaddict · 14/02/2007 12:00

ah thats what mn does to you!! if you could see some of my earlier posts you would probably think what a naive idiot.

IntergalacticWalrus · 14/02/2007 12:00

Na, just looked at your pics. you are stunning

btw, i dont get jane norman either, mainly because theier trousers just about go over my big toe

nappyaddict · 14/02/2007 12:00
