Why doesn't this dress look right?

I'm shortly returning to work from mat leave and my wardrobe needs a bit of attention. Have just ordered this from Boden and not sure if I like it. I like the idea of it. Had a knitted dress for years and so easy to throw on in the morning, but it got threadbare in the elbows (😳).

So this one. Does it just need a good iron? Is it too short? Is the waist in the wrong place (never really thought of myself as long-waisted but I've had this impression a few times recently)? Are the shoes wrong? Or am I just used to seeing myself in jeans and have forgotten how to dress for work?

Help!!!

I think it's the grey/pink combo... looks too casual, would be best in the late summer with bare legs and some converse. Is there a black/dark blue option? The fit is great on you, you look fab! Smile

OlennasWimple · 01/11/2016 20:38

Actually, this is kinda sums up my recent experience with Boden - something a bit different, looks like it should work, but...it doesn't quite....

Mishaps · 01/11/2016 20:40

I really like it - it is classically stylish but with a bit of a twist. You look grand in it!

ShebaShimmyShake · 01/11/2016 20:42

Grey and pink always looks a bit 80s to me.

Bertucci · 01/11/2016 20:43

I think it looks a bit too small, too.

Jointhejoyrun75 · 01/11/2016 20:43

The pink stripes seem to be sitting in the wrong place on you. It's definitely not you, you have a lovely figure, it's the dress! Perhaps look for plainer alternative in a different colour.

purpleshortcake · 01/11/2016 20:44

Personally I think a long boot would look fab with it...perhaps a flat? I have a couple of dresses like yours and a particular Victoria's Secret bra I have thrusts my boobs upwards and makes everything the dresses hang better!

purpleshortcake · 01/11/2016 20:45

PS if you like Boden I think some of their A line skirts with a round or V neck (depending if you like to plunge!) cashmere crew would look ace with your figure!

cansu · 01/11/2016 20:46

I think it looks quite nice but it does draw too much attention to the boob area. I think for the price you have probably paid from Boden it should be perfect though.

EmpressoftheMundane · 01/11/2016 20:46

I think you look nice. You have a good figure and the dress, being made out of jersey, shows it off.

I would guess that what you don't like is the fact that it has a very high neckline. Your shoulders appear to be wider than your hips, and you have a full bust. A high neckline visually creates a big block of colour around your shoulders and bust thereby accentuating it. A v-neckline would be perfect for you. I also think the waist is about a centimetre too low. It's falling below your natural waistline. But this is quibbling!

Marcipex · 01/11/2016 20:48

The top is a bit too clingy, and yes, the waist isn't quite in the right place.

It would be smarter in a darker colour, as you said.

ToastieRoastie · 01/11/2016 20:50

I think the neckline makes you look top-heavy. You have a fantastic figure, maybe a v-neck style would work better.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 01/11/2016 20:53

OK...

-You have a lovely figure
-The dress is not too small, it's too long. The waist is about 1-2 inches below where it should be and so is the hem. That makes it look weird around the waist / hips, and it makes your legs look short (because it's too long). Do you need a petite?
-You need a better bra
-The colour is wrong. Navy would be so much better with your hair colour.

HTH

Liiinoo · 01/11/2016 20:56

You looked great but the pink band looks a bit casual. If you get another one I think boots would be nicer than heels.

I am envious of your post baby figure.

PlumsGalore · 01/11/2016 20:58

I am another one that just thinks the shoes and tights are wrong, not you or the dress. You are a great shape and it fits nice. I would wear it with boots myself.

DamePastel · 01/11/2016 21:02

You've a lovely figure but dress makes yyour boobs look like they arrived half an hour before you.

\perhaps same dress would look better with a minimiser? nothing wrong with big boobs but some outfits make them stand out so much.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 01/11/2016 21:06

The colours are too casual for such a flirty/date night style.
You look lovely.
You can find better dresses.

blueshoes · 01/11/2016 21:09

You have a great figure.

For this style, you need a darker colour for work. The light grey emphasises your boobs too much and is distracting. A dark colour will look more professional.

burnishedsilver · 01/11/2016 21:12

I think its the colour. It gives it a sweatshirt/tee shirt vibe which is too casual for your lovely high heels and your opaque tights.

Ohyesiam · 01/11/2016 21:13

Of i looked like that in a dress I'd their a party. You look great, enjoy it.

Ohyesiam · 01/11/2016 21:14

I'd have a party I mean. Bloody phone....

ThatsNotMyToddler · 01/11/2016 21:18

Interesting that a few of you have said it's too long. I certainly wouldn't go shorter for work. And I'm really not used to having big boobs - maybe that's part of the problem!!

Aagh. I've forgotten how to dress! Thanks to all of you for the comments. You've at least most of you given me confidence that I still know what doesn't work. And thanks to those of you that have been kind too. I can't take much credit for my figure - a lot of luck and two starving babies (although only one at a time thank God) are responsible for that.

I think it's just not a very nice dress, block grey is a bit blah and the length isn't flattering.

Your figure is amazing though and I love your hair!

Fuzzypeggy · 01/11/2016 21:29

I think the problem is that dress just isn't that nice. Clingy with flippy skirt and weird stripes in colours that aren't great. It just looks like a complete non event to me. You could do much better with your great figure. A stronger colour would be better on you imo too.

WorraLiberty · 01/11/2016 21:34

It looks perfect to me.
