very dissappointed with dd hair; can any bleached blondes advise please?

dd has mostly mid brown hair with light brown/dark blonde bits in it but was blonde as a child. She has wanted to be a pale blonde for some time so asked my usual mobile hairdresser to do it explaining what she wanted; dd has been saving her money for this for a while
She said it would probably need to be done over two sessions which I was fine with. DD has collarbone length fine textured hair

First session was urgh...with blonde roots and orangey, brassy tones elsewhere. Roots have come in since the last session (about 5mm) and she did her hair again. It does not look very good ...the roots are very brassy, some hair is blonde and there are still very brassy tones.

looks a bloody mess - cost far too much which I'm bloody cross about- and dd is crying her eyes out. She is adamant that she doesn't want to see this particular hairdresser again but I don't now if there is anything we could do at home

What did the hairdresser use?

It's been many years since I was blonde, but I remember it as a two-stage process - bleach first (which leaves you with orangey hair), then a blonde dye. Did she use a blonde dye and, if so, was it the right colour for your daughter's skintone?

Can you not try a home hair dye over the top? L'Oreal Preference is very good.

I currently have silver hair but have been platinum blonde, my hair has a tendency to go brassy. This is what I do:

Get a purple shampoo or toner. The purple will help counteract the brassy tones.

I like the l'oreal one but if you want something quick, pop to tesco (or any supermarket) and get Schwarzkopf touch of silver.

I put it on dry hair for five minutes, then wet, lather, rinse and then shall with it normally.

Make sure to use a good conditioner afterwards as it can be slightly drying.

Good luck, all brunette to blondes have to fight the brass at some point.

Purple toned shampoo makes a massive difference to my hair. You can also get toners from Boots which work quite well.

she used majirel? high lift with 20% peroxide. Left it on for about 35-40 minute

I have a similar hair colour and texture, and have had relatively no problems going to peroxide blonde. I say relatively because I did have a mid brown semi on the ends which didn't lighten as much as my natural coloured hair, but it wasn't orange. Touch of Silver purple shampoo wil help. Order Olaplex stage 3 from Amazon to help strengthen the hair, and lots of conditioner. Perhaps go into a Toni and Guy and ask for advice, without committing to anything.

I'll photo it tomorrow in daylight but this photo from the internet shows a similar effect, although where she bleached dd's regrowth it is gingery

It's weird that the roots were orange the second time around, because my roots lightened better than the rest of my hair.

My IPad is refusing to play the linking game, but I use Pro-voke Touch of Silver brightening shampoo combed through my dry hair to really kick the brassiness away. This isn't following the directions on the bottle at all btw. It does come out as a scary deep purple from the bottle. It isn't the daily shampoo, but the one suggested to use twice a week.

She needs a toner - I recommend Scott Cornwall iced platinum

It's a really intense violet/blue pigment. The ash toner would work too- keep conditioning, keep using masks in between and make sure you leave AT LEAST 4-5 days between each dye or you will burn the scalp

Mine went from a brassier, orange-r state than that to a crisp, cool and bloody gorgeous blonde.

Although now I'm brunette because I'm too lazy to top up my roots.

After using the toner I'd then use John frieda mousse dye in (I think 10B?) extra light beige blonde, and then more toner. It's a multi use toner so you just get a palmful, slather it on and rescrew the lid, like conditioner

Please don't let her worry too much, with the right products (and by that I mean nothing more high end than boots!) it can totally be transformed in less than two weeks, but to be fair I would stay away from the overpriced mobile hairdresser

£100 for this; dd is crying her eyes out as it was all of her pocket money she'd saved

this is excellent. The brassiness is quite bad so I'd recommend a good four or five minutes with this stuff on. But, it might come out a bit violent-thinged. If it does, this will wash out to an ashey blonde after a couple of days but still better than brassy.

I know Bertrand ...I am bloody useless with confrontation. I'd asked hairdresser several times how much it would be and got ' don't worry about it- we'll sort something out' so price only got mentioned once she'd started. She knows money is tight here and I feel very foolish . I've promised dd that we can sort it and am going to give her the money back once dh is paid

Straight to the hair dressers, find one which specialises in colour correction.

I'd be very careful of putting anything else on yourself.

I'd text/ email the hairdresser who did it and demand my money back!

Please ask for your money back.

If it helps- think of it as stopping her doing it to some other poor girl.

Take lots of pictures.

Write to her enclosing the pictures. Just say "My daughter asked you to do xxxxxxxx on xxxxx date. The enclosed photographs show that you did not do an acceptable job. Please return my money (£100) in full within 7 days or I will take you to the Small Claims Court."

I'd definately see a professional, even just for some free advice if they'd be kind enough. If you can't afford a professional to fix it then Bleach London do a good white toner, I've also heard the Scott Cornwall is good too but haven't tried that one. Plus get the intense silver shampoo no matter what you do. It's a staple for blondes nowadays! After a week I'd then be putting another colour on, l'oreal preference helped mine; their Stockholm shade is a very light pearl platinum kind of blonde that doesn't use the lightening powder, whereas the other platinum dyes usually do. (The ones with powder make my hair yellow personally.) It is the one ultra light blonde dye that doesn't give me orange hues personally (I have a honey gene in me!) And I really like the frosted/pearl blonde effect, it's very subtle and I always get compliments when I use it.

Just because the hairdresser did the work doesn't mean she has the right to be paid if she hasn't done the job well. There's a difference between it not turning out quite how you pictured, and it turning out absolutely fucking nothing like you asked for at all. I'm so sorry for your poor dd! At least she has a lovely mum who is going to help her with it though. This can be fixed with time. I hope she feels better soon, and you too op.

I loathe confrontation, but I think a letter threatening small claims court is a good idea. A decent hairdresser wouldn't have taken money for doing that.
