dd has mostly mid brown hair with light brown/dark blonde bits in it but was blonde as a child. She has wanted to be a pale blonde for some time so asked my usual mobile hairdresser to do it explaining what she wanted; dd has been saving her money for this for a while
She said it would probably need to be done over two sessions which I was fine with. DD has collarbone length fine textured hair

First session was urgh...with blonde roots and orangey, brassy tones elsewhere. Roots have come in since the last session (about 5mm) and she did her hair again. It does not look very good Sad ...the roots are very brassy, some hair is blonde and there are still very brassy tones.

looks a bloody mess - cost far too much which I'm bloody cross about- and dd is crying her eyes out. She is adamant that she doesn't want to see this particular hairdresser again but I don't now if there is anything we could do at home

That is awful.

I would recommend trying Wella Colour Charm T18 - also called white lady sometimes. It's a salon toner which I've used with great success on a bleached and brassy friend. You'll need to mix it with developer - 1 part toner to 2 parts developer. I'd probably use a 6% personally based on the colour (the brassy bit needs a bit more lift) but if her hair is feeling a bit tired you might want to try 3%.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 06/09/2016 21:54

Purple toner or shampoo is just not going to sort your dd's hair.

I recommend Bleach London White Toner (Boots). Has excellent online reviews. It's the only toner that neutralises very brassy tones without leaving a purple tinge.

I think it's worth a try before putting more bleach on her poor hair.

klch14 · 06/09/2016 21:55

Wash with a toner, will take out the brassy tones and bring the blonde out. I've been in the same situation before. It's awful!

nancy75 · 06/09/2016 22:01

I have black hair so can't help with dye advice, personally I would be demanding a refund from the hairdresser and using the £100 to pay someone that knows what they are doing

SavoyCabbage · 06/09/2016 22:05

I use the Bleach London toner and it's really good. My hair looks like your dd's after I bleach it and before I use the toner. Afterwards it's a white blonde.

teejyluigi · 07/09/2016 07:16

Hairdresser here .

She needs the ginger bits spot bleaching .
Go to Sally's and get wella free lights bleach and peroxide 30%
Apply to brassy bits
Wash off and tone with purple shampoo. Bleach London is good .
Leave on for 20-30 minutes

MargotLovedTom · 07/09/2016 07:22

Will these toners everyone is recommending sort the colour out permanently, or do they wash out?

acornsandnuts · 07/09/2016 07:25

Poor Dd.

Please text this hairdresser and ask for your money back.

You paid for X service and the hairdresser will be well aware that it didn't turn out great.

Give your Dd a good life lesson, if your not happy and you haven't got what you asked for, you don't pay.
I assume she worked hard to save for this, please don't teach her that it's ok to be walked over.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 07/09/2016 07:59

Will these toners sort the colour out permanently?

The purple toning shampoos will wash out after a couple of washes but can be used regularly without damaging blonde hair.

The Bleach London White toner is dye based so will be more permanent although you would probably want to re apply after root touch ups.

I think it's worth pointing out that platinum blonde hair is very high maintenance. Regular touch ups are needed for dark roots (monthly) and it needs a lot of extra care to avoid damage; intensive conditioners, argan oil treatments, serum and regular trims plus toning shampoos.
It's a commitment and also fairly expensive to maintain.

bestofbothhovis · 07/09/2016 08:03

Keep toning it. I know a PP said it won't work but I've been bleach blonde (only going back to my natural hair colour last week). I managed to go from a very brassy orange to a silver using toners. I also used a dye (think it was Clairol) which was a really light ash blonde dye. It had a purple base to it so really really took any orange or yellow out of my hair

Indecisivejo · 07/09/2016 10:20

Why is everybody saying buy this or do this?! It needs to be rectified by a hairdresser, I'm even more surprised a hairdresser has also posted telling you to follow that procedure yourself! You will end up doing more damage than good! Definitely ask for your money back and use it to go to a different hairdresser who is confident she can fix it! Please don't attempt to do anything yourself, take it from someone who had a home hair disaster and has spent about 6 months of regular hairdresser visits to get it back on the right path!

Gatekeeper · 07/09/2016 13:01

thank you everyone for advice and soothing words. I have contacted original hairdresser to let her know we are unhappy with the results and she is coming over at the weekend to 'resolve things'

Fingers crossed

Oh blimey, I'm not sure I'd let her anywhere near my hair again! I think I'd insist on my money back and go elsewhere.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 07/09/2016 16:29

I agree with Dame some hairdressers are useless with colouring hair, even if they are brilliant at cutting and styling.
I suspect she will just put more bleach on your daughter's hair. That will lighten it but it needs to be in good condition to handle the repeated bleaching. That is why I suggested using a white toner first, to avoid all the chemicals.
Perhaps ask what the hairdresser's plan is first and ask her to assess the condition of your daughter's hair using a strand stretch test.

It is awkward but getting a refund and going to a salon that has a colourist trained in colour correction might be the safest option.

BertrandRussell · 07/09/2016 16:30

Well, so long as "resolve things" means "give you your money back"

Do not let her anywhere near your dd's hair. Print off plenty of pictures of how it looked "before" you tried to sort it.

If you think you're not strong enough to stand up to her, either don't let her come round- just write to her saying you want your money back OR get your toughest strongest friend to come round to back you up. She has stolen your daughter's hard saved £100. Do not let her get away with it!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/09/2016 16:55

£100 for a mobile hairdresser is ridiculous moneyShock

I get mine cut and coloured for £85 in a really swanky salon.

Ohb0llocks · 07/09/2016 17:14

That is absolutely extortionate for a mobile hairdresser. Agree with PP she needs to spot bleach and then tone.

Indecisivejo · 07/09/2016 17:15

I agree definitely do not let her touch your daughters hair again age clearly doesn't have a clue as she left happy to take ur money for that result! As someone else above said if your not "tough" enough or feel uncomfortable get someone round who is and tell the hairdresser it's non negotiable you want your money back-all of it, or u will take it further..this will be enough for her to cut her losses and give you your money! Don't let her talk you in to only giving you some of it back be very firm u want a full refund! Then use it to go somewhere else!.....gosh I wish I lived near u I would so come and be the "tough" one ha ha

MiniCooperLover · 07/09/2016 17:35

Don't be ridiculous and don't be a wimp !!! Do not let her touch your daughters hair again, she clearly doesn't have a clue. Get the toners ASAP or get her to a hairdresser tomorrow.

Gatekeeper · 07/09/2016 17:48

I am a wimp though Blush

OP posts:
BertrandRussell · 07/09/2016 18:01

Nothing wrong with being a wimp. But if you are, don't talk to her face to face. Send her a letter something like the one I suggested earlier by recorded delivery. Don't engage with her by any other means.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/09/2016 18:17

Try and see it as a good lesson in assertiveness for dd so she knows what to do when she's older. I'm quite shy naturally but usually become overwhelmed with a sense of outrage which helps me get my point across. I'm a funny mix of the two so I know where you're coming from.

Good luck!

nancy75 · 07/09/2016 18:26

Just text, tell her there's no need to come round, hair is really bad and not acceptable, you want your money back, ask her to transfer it to your bank so you don't have to discuss it face to face

BishopBrennansArse · 07/09/2016 18:28

Go to a salon. Those aren't mobile prices!!!
I have turquoise hair, to pre lighten mine to platinum blonde without damaging it they use a high lift toner. Much less damaging than bleach.

mumofthemonsters808 · 07/09/2016 18:30

Don't put any product on it, she really does need to come back and rectify this.Im amazed that she thought your Dd would be happy with the end result and any proper hairdresser would gladly return if her valued customer was unhappy.IF you can't bring yourself to phone her or send her a text, ask a friend to do it for you.The only other option is to go to a reputable salon for advice, but the odds are, you would be parting with another hundred quid if you go ahead with the treatment.Im sorry for your Dd, she really is a crap hairdresser.
