Does anyone else look young?

user1471888857 · 25/08/2016 15:01

I'm 31 this year and look 19/20 no joke.
I hate it.
I get patronised and spoke down too all the time in shops/cafes etc.
I was in a shop and I was looking at a jumper and a very very snooty assistant said "oh dear I think that would be more suitable for you when you get a bit older"
Also I joined a counselling course and the course was ladies probably 25-45 and nobody let me speak.
A woman was 41 and everytime I spoke she rolled her eyes ..or butted in then had the cheek to say .."your young what do you know"
I'm so very annoyed with it.
I was in a taxi with a friend going to a pub and didn't have id and taxi man said .."you might get lucky tonight, door staff not on till late, you young girls today"
I'm 30 years old !!!!

Putting £100k+ worth of groceries through the checkout with two KS2 DC at my elbow and then having to leave the bottle of wine behind because I didn't have my driving license with me, was the one that really made me fume. That happened a few times.

Just5minswithDacre · 25/08/2016 16:33

Oh and the same with teaspoons in a weekly shop. Bloody teaspoons!

FoolandFitz · 25/08/2016 16:34

FloraFoxglove

Care to explain what you mean?

MotherOfGlob · 25/08/2016 16:36

I don't look particularly young but do sound young. My job involves speaking to people on the phone. The amount of patronising comments I've had about being young is unbelievable, I'm bloody 40 ffs!

FloraFoxglove · 25/08/2016 16:41

Fool - what part of it didn't you understand? People believe they look young. Most of the time they're deluded

Just5minswithDacre · 25/08/2016 16:44

Why would anyone want to delude themselves that they look callow and underage Flora?

How do you delude yourself that you're being IDed if you're not Confused

rightknockered · 25/08/2016 16:45

I used to have this problem.
The solution is just to keep a resting bitch face on and not be too friendly
Then you just get called snooty, but at least no-one messes with you

Deadnettle · 25/08/2016 16:51

Flora last easter someone asked me what I was studying for my A levels! I was 30 at the time. Trust me I'm not deluded about the age I look.

user1471888857 · 25/08/2016 16:54

Also I have a young voice ...answered the phone..."hiya hunni is your parents at home"
It was telesales so I said no sorry and hung up Smile

I used to look young before dcs thanks, kids and once had a make up consultation specifically to make me look older, as clients weren't taking me seriously at work.

We found that dark pink/purple lipstick is quite ageing on me, but also quite hideous in itself.

Have you seen the last Harry Potter film in which they are all 20 years older at the end? It was all scarves, "mum clothes" and hair up for Hermione and Ginny iirc.

HitsAndMrs · 25/08/2016 17:01

Yep! I'm 29 and get patronised all the time. I've been told I look 15 but mostly get 18/19. I've been told recently by a 30 year old 'oh, well you're a lot younger than me.' Even if I was younger, why do people think it's acceptable to talk down to a person like that?! I have two kids and if I'm with them, people seem to realise I'm older and speak to me with a bit more respect.
I always get asked for ID, I understand those who may feel complimented by this, but like you, I feel embarrassed.

Believeitornot · 25/08/2016 17:03

I did look young until the last few years after sleep deprivation meant I aged a decade overnight.

How I miss those days

FoolandFitz · 25/08/2016 17:15

flora but we're not talking about people who think they look young. We are talking about people who actually look young.

Wooftweetwooftweet · 25/08/2016 17:25

When I was about 16 and feel very insecure about my greasy and spotty skin, a women on a beauty counter made me feel much better by saying that when all my friends are getting wrinkles, I won't, as I'll have beautiful skin from the extra oils.
How right she was, at 35 I have non-spotty wrinkle free skin and look much younger than my friends.

GreatPointIAgreeWithYouTotally · 25/08/2016 17:27

Flora

It's things like people point blank don't believe you are old enough to have children who have left home and declare 'you must have been a child bride'..er no, I was 26 actually.

goose1964 · 25/08/2016 17:32

I'm im my early 50s & often get mistaken for 10 year younger, when my grandson was a baby (now 4) people never knew if I or my (young looking daughter) was the mother - it was so funny watching them trying to work it out

Just5minswithDacre · 25/08/2016 17:35

Yes Great the amusement factor of being told that I 'can't be' my older DCs mother wore off a very long time ago. It's so rude when you stop to consider it.

allthebeesisded · 25/08/2016 17:36

I went to Lisbon on holiday some years ago. We were met at the airport by a man who was going to take us to our hotel. Wagging his finger at me in a jokey manner, he asked me why I wasn't in school? Because, I replied, I am 29.

Then, when I was in my 30s, I was asked in a bank if I would be interested in a young savers account. When I said probably not, as I was over 30, the woman got very quiet and embarrassed.

Fuckoffdailymailyoufuckers · 25/08/2016 17:39

I'm 33 in a couple of days and a woman came to read the electric meter today and asked if my mum or dad was in when I opened the door. Made my day!

ThomasHardyPerennial · 25/08/2016 18:04

31 in a month, and the other day I got asked when I was starting college! It makes me cringe so much, makes me feel so awkward Blush.

Aoibhe · 25/08/2016 18:11

I used to look young but aged very suddenly when I turned... Wait for it... 31! I have photos of myself at 30 and again at 31 and there's a huge change in my appearance 😭 I'm not quite sure what it is exactly, I weighed the same but face suddenly seemed gaunt.

Enjoy it while you have it OP!

oldlaundbooth · 25/08/2016 18:22

'I'm sorry, exactly what did you say?' with a quizzical eyebrow raise usually makes people have a re-think.

I got ID'd for the Lottery when I was 30 Grin

PrincessHairyMclary · 25/08/2016 18:23

The head master at the Secondary school I work at mistook me for a student when I first started last year.

Student often try and guess my age and don't believe I'm nearly 30.

The most annoying thing is a colleague I work with has a daughter of a similar age and she treats me like a child and whenever something hasn't been done properly will actually tell me off. Normally it is something that is nothing to do with me that the HoD has brought up with her and she passes the buck.

I went out with my parents (first time without DD) for a meal and the waitress wouldn't serve me Angry

Why do you think you look young? I don't eat overly healthily but I put it down to not smoking or drinking much nowadays. And I've alway moisturised and so far the wrinkles haven't developed yet.

TutanKaDashian · 25/08/2016 18:28

I'm 33 and got asked for ID to buy a lottery ticket last week! GrinGrinGrin

Amanda89x · 25/08/2016 18:28

Yes! I'm 26 and look about 18 and I always get comments (usually door to door salesman) "you don't look old enough to live alone" is a phrase I've heard on more than one occasion and doormen always look at my driving License as if it's fake Confused
