I've cut my own hair and fucked it up

So I've done the mumsnet hair cut a few times, usually with good results. However today I was feeling saucy and decided to lop some off the length as well by putting my hair in a ponytail at the nape and cut some off.
It's not good. I'm going to have to wear my hair up until I can afford a hairdresser to sort it. It's going to be an embarrassing cut of shame.

Oops. I'd probably keep hacking bits off until it was nearly all gone. And then invest in a hat.

I'm sure it's the law that we need a photo too.

My moto is, Its only hair and will grow back. There isn't a rule that you have to go to a hairdresser. I cut mine all the time. I cut my kids. Its not always that great but i try to make it straight and passable.
It kind of annoys me that i need to fork out SO much money for a haircut when its so cheap for men to go to a barbers. I also hate going to the hairdresser. I hate the pointless chit chat, Most of the time, i dont like the haircut either!!!

I hate going to the hairdresser - cut my own about once a year. I used to faff but now I just pick up the nearest pair of scissors (often small ones) and roughly part it down the middle and cut it the same length- ish on each side. And people have said 'have you had you hair cut? - it looks really nice'
Last time I messed up and made it too short to tie back...I cut it wet before and it was a tiny bit too short when it was dry. This time I did it on impulse - dry - before a shower (the shower was running) I stupidly thought - wet it goes shorter - so dry it will go longer - hacked the first bit and thought -Nooooooo -what were you thinking? but had to do the rest the same length...but as someone else said - it grows....

I did exactly the same thing a few months back op. I saw the threads about the haircut and thought "that sounds simple enough!". My hair is curly and ridiculously thick. It did not turn out well! But not one person has noticed it went a bit wrong. DH didn't even notice it had been cut. So it probably seems worse to you than it actually is.

My DH cuts my hair for me, In fact he's doing it tonight, no major problems so far...

I was expecting some mad cut close to the skin!
It's actually not that bad, especially as it looks like it's wavy/curly and you can get away with it not being cut perfectly straight.

That looks OK to me op! Personally, I've stopped dabbling in hair since my friend ran off crying after letting me take scissors to hers. I was trying to straighten it but of course I had to keep chopping until it was up to her ears. She'd only wanted a trim. . I was about 13 then but still feel bad.

I did hairdressing when I first left school,your hair looks fine there's no disaster there major or otherwise so you really don't need to see a hairdresser.

Looks okay to me. I have a habit of cutting my own, then I usually have to text hubby at work to 'play hairdresser' to level the back for me. However, the last time, I was convinced it was still a bit wonky so I had to go to the hairdressers for a dry trim & she did it exactly how I wanted it, still £16 a bit steep for a dry trim but I love it.

I did this cut a month or so ago, you need to straighten your hair, do the ponytail again and if you're not confident get someone else to cut straight.

Once you've done that your hair is quite thick so you'll probably want to thin out the ends, the easiest way to do this is to take a very little section at a time and twirl around so its tight, then take a razor and about an inch and a half up start shaving down. You'll lop loads and loads off it'll seem but that's normal, there's tonnes of tutorials on YouTube.

Dont stress, it can look amazing.

The other thing to do if you want a few layers is the pony tail diy haircut (is that the mumsnet one you mentioned?) I've done it on shorter length and it's gone well! Good luck and don't give up!

That's completely fine! I thought you were going to say you'd done it with pinking shears or something mental like that!

Oh, I've done that. I just let it dry curly (because when it's curly it doesn't show) until it's long enough to fix. But then I am someone who will bleach my own hair and dye it all sorts of colours without getting too het up about it if it all goes to pot. I certainly have my hang ups but hair isn't one of them.
