Can you recommend a good nail polish brand?

I bite my nails. Blush I'm trying very hard to stop and find if I paint them, I am less likely to nibble them.
I have a few nail polishes (not many because they are usually too short to paint!) but when I got them out the other day, they are rather old and claggy/gloopy now so I want to treat myself to some new ones.
I'd like a gel-like one (but not gel) and have tried a Lottie London one from Superdrug which is fab. But I don't really like the range of colours they do, I've got a lovely dark red and that's the only one that appeals. I have an essie one which I don't like and a Leighton Denny one which was ok but didn't last long.

Nails Inc do 'gel-effect ' ones. They last a bit longer than LD, but not cheap.

biscuitkumquat · 22/01/2016 10:36

I wear gel all the time these days, but when I used normal polish, I always rated OPI. And their base & top coats are fantastic.

polyhymnia · 22/01/2016 11:06

I'm a great fan of Essie. Also have a few Chanel ones and Jessica and OPI also good but always return to. Essie.

CoteDAzur · 22/01/2016 11:24

OPI is the best. It's far superior to Chanel imho.

Pinkvici22 · 22/01/2016 11:25

Essie, OPI or Sally Hansen gel effect

Leviticus · 22/01/2016 11:34

Essie

TheGreenNinja · 22/01/2016 11:36

I've got an essie one already and am not keen on it. It seems a very thin texture (and brush) and I can't get a good finish with it. Doesn't help that I really don't like the colour either, don't know why I bought it.
I'll have a look at the OPI colours...

I love Essie. I bought a couple of Opi colours recently and am surprised at how quickly they chip, I'm sure it used to last longer.

Budget wise you can't beat Rimmel - great brushes too

PiratesLifeForMe · 22/01/2016 12:11

Eddie for me too, good quality & affordable

LBOCS2 · 22/01/2016 12:14

Budget: use rimmel.

Essie and Nails INC for mid range.

TK Maxx usually have nails inc ones in stock, essie are available on Amazon at a discount.

The trick to making them last is a decent top coat. I use a cheapy Sally Hansen, but lots of people swear by Seche Vite.

polyhymnia · 22/01/2016 12:19

Agree Chanel aren't as good texture wise as Essie, OPI, Jessica but do sometimes get tempted by the colours.

Ludways · 22/01/2016 12:34

I've always rated Rimmel or Number 7, applied very thinly with more coats. This comes from being a swimmer in my youth and this way lasts better being constantly immersed in water. Applied thicker or posher thicker nail varnishes, these don't last well In water and come away from the nail quicker.

SnookyWookyWooWoo · 22/01/2016 12:51

Jessica all the way for me - gorgeous range of colours - not cheap but lovely

Westielove · 22/01/2016 13:42

Revlon gel envy are very long lasting, and quite often on some type of offer.

FauxFox · 22/01/2016 13:44

OPI are my fav but Seiche Vite top cat makes any brand look 'gel' high shine finish.

Deianira · 22/01/2016 13:50

Essie is quite thin, and does chip - so two coats and a decent base/top coat are important. But I find them really easy to apply because of their thickness, and the range of colours is great.

Aquamarine70 · 22/01/2016 13:51

Revlon or OPI are good.

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 22/01/2016 13:54

I love the little Mavela varnishes. I find they go on really well and are pretty good against chips

burnishedsilver · 22/01/2016 14:08

I've tried all kinds of brands and keep coming back to Rimmel. The oringinal smaller bottles seem to wear better than the newer Salon Pro range.

TheGreenNinja · 22/01/2016 14:42

Thanks for the suggestions, I've ordered a rimmel, a Nails Inc and the Seche vote top coat so will see how I like these before I order any more!

Vite, not vote!

A England. Beautiful colours and the base and top coat are ace. I don't get on with OPI due to the stupid giant brush being wider than some of my nails.
Agree with pps on Rimmel, all my polishes are A England, Rimmel and Essie (though my all time favourite polish is Chanel Fire which is discontinued Sad)

splodgeness · 22/01/2016 15:31

I used to use Nails Inc, Essie etc. But recently been converted to Rimmel 60 second super shine. The brush is brilliant and it lasts a week.

Dreamqueen · 22/01/2016 15:36

I bought the Ciate advent calendar when it was reduced in TK Maxx. Never used that make before but I love it. Polish lasts really well.
