Pinafore dresses for an adult

i.e. me? I'm quite old though 40 - would I look too sad for words?

Something like this? Please be nice - I genuinely have no taste so always go for safe options.

About 5 ft 7 very slim and I guess a casual style, if you could remotely call it that.

I can't get the link to link to the exact dress. It's the one called denim pinafore dress, if you didn't guess.

I think you can get away with it because your'e slim (not too big chested) and quite tall..I looked at one like this that was black corduroy material and chickened out of buying it beacause I'm 40.. Let me know if you get it and maybe I'll buy mine!

Nabootique · 18/01/2016 16:24

I think they're lovely. I like the Lyla one on that page too. I really wanted a burgundy corduroy one I saw in Topshop but then my colleague got it and I didn't want to copy her so I didn't buy it Sad I saw some other ones in Urban Outfitters where the colours were nice but they looked like they would be a bit sack-like on.

HesterShaw · 18/01/2016 16:24

Ha! Thanks ILostIt.

I'm to be the pinafore 40 guinea pig.

I like the Lyla one too Nabootique, in fact I like it better than the actual pinafore but they don't have any 8s left. Looks like they're winding that line down, which is a pity. I guess I could get the 10 and see if I'm still full of post Christmas pudge

I don't have any experience with Fatface sizing to know if they come up big or small. Might be worth having a look on eBay for one in your size though. I've had the same problem before on the actual website with a couple of bits but eBay has come up trumps.

Lucymatilde · 18/01/2016 16:31

I love it and also the dungaree dress. I never know what to wear under on top though.

HesterShaw · 18/01/2016 16:34

Not at the moment but thanks for the suggestion.

A Fat Face dresses search on ebay is currently yielding some rather nasty creations.

I'm fairly reliably an 8 at FF - they seem quite standard. As opposed to White Stuff where the 6s hang off me.

Lucy I reckon a nice Breton top and some thick tights and boots.

As I said earlier, I a very safe dresser!

Lucymatilde · 18/01/2016 16:44

Hester I like that look. Thank you.

Lucymatilde · 18/01/2016 16:45

Boots with heels or flats by the way?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/01/2016 16:48

I vote flat boots and a plain top and thick tights

HesterShaw · 18/01/2016 16:48

Up to you. I never wear heels as I simply fall over.

Hark at me, handing out sartorial advice :o

I love it. As long as you don't have large boobs, it should look good. Dungaree shape isn't good for large chests.

Lucymatilde · 18/01/2016 16:53

Ok for me then. I'm not overly too heavy. I can negotiate heels though. Perhaps that's why....

Lucymatilde · 18/01/2016 16:54

Sorry not too heavy, top heavy.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 18/01/2016 16:56

DD(17) is rocking a lot of pinafore dresses, polo neck jumpers and platform shoes at the moment. She looks like my 70s junior school teacher. It's a nice look though.

HesterShaw · 18/01/2016 17:00

Oh I'm not top heavy. No danger of that

Tinkly I'm sure your DD looks amazing. But that was what I was a little concerned about - trying to look 17! I'll give it a go though. What's the worst that could happen?

OP posts:
Lucymatilde · 18/01/2016 17:00

Fantastic! Wish I could be back then.....

HesterShaw · 18/01/2016 17:03

Where's the Lyla dress gone?

It says NEW but they've taken it away! Maybe I'll phone up.

Elledouble · 18/01/2016 17:04

I've got a black cord one from New Look, which I wear with stripy long-sleeved t-shirts, black opaque tights and DM-type shoes. It's quite short (I'm 5'9") but I like it. I'm 30 Smile

Lucymatilde · 18/01/2016 17:04

Don't let them take the dungaree dress too!!

HesterShaw · 18/01/2016 17:14

Thanks for your replies everyone. I was expecting to be told "Have some dignity, woman."

Re the worrying about looking 17 thing. I'm in my mid-50s and wear skinny jeans, shirts/jumpers, boots, cardy's etc. It's the same thing as a lot of 17 year olds might wear. But I don't wear ripped jeans, any top with pictures/writing on, nothing cropped, nothing grungy etc. That way I (hope) I don't look like I'm trying to be a young-un. I'm absolutely sure that the dungaree dress can look cool, current but not teen-y, depending on what you wear with it.

Lucymatilde · 18/01/2016 21:30

Time - do you wear these nice pinafore dresses?
