Anyone have any suggestions on hair dye for under 16's

My dd wants to dye her hair black with a semi permanent dye but everything in the supermarkets states not for under 16's, are there any makes of dye available for younger ages that anyone knows of ?

I dont know, didnt even know there was an age on it!!!
A little girl i know had her hair with pink streaks. She is 9. They were permanent. They looked shit. Personally i wouldnt dye my dd's hair [ but then she is only 9 and i think that its too young]. I have bought her some hair chalks. No idea how good they are!

What age is your dd?
Is she in her teens? If so, Im sure you could probably do a strand test to see if she is allergic to any of the ingredients. She could also use a semi. Much kinder chemical wise or what about colour effects from superdrug. Its a wash in wash out. Not sure you would get black though.

She is 10 with very dark brown hair but wants it totally black

I don't have a problem with her dying it and although we did an allergy test with a supermarket hair dyethat was fine I was still a little unsure with it specifying not for under 16's

Would rather get something semi permanent specifically made for her age if I can rather than use an adult version that may be ok but may not

There's a reason they don't make hair dye for ten year olds

Will this be ok at school?

Do you agree it's a good idea?

It's fine, my dd uses permanent dyes and bleach.
She's 14 and I had no idea of any over16 rule.

I dont want to be preachy but she is still very young. I was thinking maybe she was around 13,14 or 15. Personally, I am sure she is beautiful as she is like my dd. I think i would promote that instead.
Maybe ask a hairdresser if you want her to have it.

10 is very young for dying hair isn't it??

Can't see that it would be a problem at school as totally black wouldn't be that much darker than her very dark brown standard colour, just even and uniform in colouring

Quite happy for her to dye it as it will then wash and brush as normal

She has coloured it before with sprays from Claire's accessories but then it is a nightmare to brush afterwards, and I guess red or green probably wouldn't have been suitable for school but I am happy for her to do it if she wants it all black with a semi permanent dye that will wash out in 9 or 10 washes

Try vegetable based dyes maybe, like manic panic or crazy colour. Or you could try henna and indigo.
As with anything though, do an allergy test first. Just dab a small amount in a small inconspicuous area on her skin and wait a day or two.

Superdrug do a wash in/wash out colour for about £1.50. I'd use that (I used it today to dip-dye the ends of my 8 yo DD hair today). No harsh chemicals and will wash out. I wouldn't use bleach/semi or permanent dye on a child though. I'm sure I was using Shaders and Toners when I was 10 (shows age)

Will in the meantime take a trip to super drug for a wash in wash out for her to try the colour

I've never noticed an 'over 16 only' on any hair dye and I've been dying my hair for almost 20 years (since I was 14)

That aside, wtf would you allow a ten year old child to dye their hair?

Triptrap, because she wants to, why would I not let her do something she wants if I don't have a problem with it

Get something very temporary. If she colours her hair semi permenant and above, it'll take years and years to get rid of especially on virgin (as in never coloured before) hair. If her hair is in good condition, which I assume it is being 10, the very gentlest of colours only.

I feel like she's about 2-3 years too early, at least, for hair dying. I started at 15 with those wella wash in mousse things but no proper dyes until 20's. It just seems a shame to colour undamaged, naturally beautiful hair at such a young age. I'd steer her towards learning how to care for it properly first. Hair masks and that kind of thing. Then she feels like she's doing something with it without any potential damage.

I really am all for hair colouring and make up etc, I love it. But not so young.

At that age and if you are intending to dye right up the scalp rather than just dip dying then I would be worried about sensitising her to allergens - that would really restrict her dying options in her adult life.

If you and she really want to do this then avoid anything with PPD in it.

Manic Panic/ Directions/ Stargazer/ Crazy Colour are vegetable dyes which will do no damage (they make a HUGE mess though and will stain EVERYTHING they come into contact with) but you should be careful with black in particular as they are not meant for 'virgin' hair. As a pp has said 'virgin' is unbleached hair. So a black in one if these dyes will be based on blue or green and on bleached hair will come out black and fade to either blue- pastel blue or green- pastel green. But on virgin hair the pigment won't take so well so may just go a horrible green tint but would fade very very quickly especially if washed with very warn water and using certain types of shampoo like Head and Shoulders. She is unlikely to get a true black using these but do not let her use Henna! A wash in/ wash out colour might be better, but anything semi perm will have some peroxide in. Up to you if you want that but you will never truly wash out a 28 wash semi perm, it will lift some colour to deposit the colour on the box.

Don't be daft. She's 10. School are quite rightly going to kick off about it too.
