Anyone have any suggestions on hair dye for under 16's

My dd wants to dye her hair black with a semi permanent dye but everything in the supermarkets states not for under 16's, are there any makes of dye available for younger ages that anyone knows of ?

I don't think anyone would say anything at my school, well not to the child or her parents anyway, there would be raised eyebrows in the staffroom though.

She wants to is not a reason for doing it though. She's 10. My oldest wanted to dye her hair from a young age and at the age of 14 I let her. I have a 10 year old too. There's no way I'd dye her hair.

I think completely black will look awful anyway, very few people can carry it off.

Tell her no and you'll rethink when she's 13 or 14.

Such hysteria over a colour which is only a shade darker than than her natural colour anyway.
It's hair, it grows, or can be changed, and btw my dd can carry off blonde and black and everything in between.
I'm sure the op has checked with school too.

Zombies I can suggest 2 products that I sometimes use, both semis that last "up to 8 washes"
Because my hair hasn't been chemically dyed or bleached they wash out super quickly though (after about 2 washes) and your daughter would probably have the same problem.
One is Adore, which is the same kind of vegetable dye as Crazy Color/Manic Panic etc but it comes in "natural" colors.
The other is Wella Color Fresh (there are other Wella dyes with a similar name, but this one is the 8 wash one.
Neither of these have any peroxide, they just coat the surface of your hair, so WILL wash out!
I've got light blonde hair, so use different shades, but both of these come in black (I think Adore has at least 2 different blacks)
You can get them online, but the price really varies. I get mine from a big hairdressing supply shop where they're cheaper!

Thanks for the helpful replies everyone I have enough info to go on here

My wife did an allergy test with the supermarket bought dye she originally got to do it and although it was fine I wasn't happy about using it when it clearly stated not for under 16's

I have learnt more about hair colouring from this thread than I knew before and started it for safe suggestions which I am grateful for from those of you who have taken time to reply with helpful advice

You're welcome Zombies I think it's very sensible to steer clear of anything with peroxide (and a lot of things labelled semi permanent do have peroxide in them - the clue is when they say they last for anything more than 8 washes, the peroxide opens the hair shaft slightly to make the dye last longer)
The ones I suggested would be safe for your DDs hair (though I believe you're supposed to do a patch test for any dye) but could work out quite expensive if she has long hair (like I do) and she wanted to keep using it, as they wash out so quickly on virgin (meaning untreated with chemicals!) hair. Smile

zombiesarecoming · 03/01/2016 15:01

Yes she does have long hair and I was only after something for upto a few washes so if it washes out after a couple due to her hair being Virgin hair then it isn't a problem.

I may suggest she waits until half term and tries another colour instead of black first though, although I am pretty sure she was hoping for a Wednesday Adams look

I would LOVE to look like Wednesday Addams myself, she's one of my role models! Grin

CremeEggThief · 03/01/2016 17:01

There is a BIG difference between very dark brown and black, and I am not sure there's such a thing as a temporary black hair dye. I too think 10 is far too young.

IsadoraQuagmire · 03/01/2016 17:14

creme Yes there are more or less temporary dyes, the brands I mentioned. Not real "temporaries" which wash out next wash, but true semis which have no peroxide and can last up to 8 washes on bleached hair and a couple of washes on virgin hair.

bumblebeerat · 03/01/2016 17:41

I don't know anything about products to use on someone so young but just wanted to say be careful of some semi permanent black hair dye. I first died my hair black with that stuff and it didn't wash out well. It also completely ruined my hair. I did go from blonde to black but just wanted to say be careful.

bumblebeerat · 03/01/2016 17:42

Wednesday Adams is my role model too. Always wanted to be her as a child never really had the look with my curly blonde hair and chubby red cheeks.

itsbetterthanabox · 04/01/2016 23:38

I dyed my hair from about age 12. Permanent dyes and non permanent. Casting creme gloss are nice semi perms or take her to a hairdresser who can advise you and use a suitable dye.
Just make sure to do a patch test. That's the most important thing.

itsbetterthanabox · 04/01/2016 23:40

I used to dye my blonde hair black at age 12 btw. It didn't go green! It went black.

ALadyHippo · 04/01/2016 23:54

A friend of a friend dyes her six year old's hair. My friend commented on a Facebook post of hers so it came up on my feed. Mad. Apparently she really loves it so it's ok...

burnishedsilver · 05/01/2016 00:18

She might find she's very pale looking with black hair - perhaps a spray tan to go with it? Hmm

Devora · 05/01/2016 00:24

My 6yo has been asking me if she can bleach and straighten her (black Afro) hair. Yet another thing I didn't think I would even be discussing until after puberty...

unimaginativename13 · 05/01/2016 00:59

Basically not suitable for under 16s means if anything goes wrong it's your fault, no back up etc should she have a reaction (you can still react even if you've done a skin test)

Salon dyes are exactly the same, salons therefore aren't insured to colour anyone's hair under the age of 16. (If they follow that is another issue)
So think twice before you let an uninsured hairdresser loose on your DCs
