Can anyone tell if my MAC lipstick is fake?

I bought a MAC lipstick on eBay (yes I know) and comparing it to my old one I think it might be fake. The base sticker is different and the new one only says MAC on on side of the barrel. I'm not going to be able to get to a MAC shop for a few weeks. Anyone hazard a guess? Thank you.

Real is on the left, fake on right in photo.

Can anyone tell if my MAC lipstick is fake?

If it was really cheap, I would sau fake.

BettyBlueToo · 12/12/2015 21:46

It was £15ish. I'm really not sure. It's a good fake if it is.

If you got a bargain, you bought a fake.

Kbear · 12/12/2015 21:53

Just looked at DD's MAC lipsticks - they look like the one with smaller print

BettyBlueToo · 12/12/2015 21:56

Yep, I have a few proper Mac lipsticks and the print isn't like the possible fake sticker. Just wanted a few more opinions before I contact the seller.

Swap the lids... Do they fit on each other?

MrsGradyOldLady · 12/12/2015 23:33

I bought a mac lipstick last week in selfridges and it does say mac in red on the side.

southeastastra · 12/12/2015 23:36

Whats the quality like smell etc

LoadsaBlusher · 13/12/2015 00:11

Was also going to say swap the lids
Fake lids don't fit on genuine lipstick bases.

Swapped the lids and they do fit each other. Hmmmm.

Pretty much all makeup on eBay is Chinese fakes

BettyBlueToo · 13/12/2015 12:48

I have had genuine Mac off eBay before. And sold it too. I'm really not sure with this one. Will just have to get to a MAC counter at some point.

If the lids fit each other it's it's not fake. The lipstick containers are designed with a specific mould that isn't easily reproduced.

I have dozens and dozens of mac lipsticks, some of them have different labels and I only buy from Mac stores; I travel a lot and buy most of my mac makeup at airports and different malls across the globe.

The lipsticks with mac written in red are either special edition lipsticks, viva glam or christmas specials.

I'm happy to post pictures as support. hth.

WhyDoesGastonBark · 13/12/2015 17:00

If the lids fit that is a good sign. I have at least 24 mac lipsticks, all bought instore from mac or online from mac the labels so vary on the bottom.
£15 is only 50p cheaper than if you bought instore so it would be a very expensive fake!

If the tubes are the same colour its a good sign too as fakes apparently are a slightly different colour!

These brands change their packaging all the time. I ordered Laura mercier tinted moisturiser from the house of Fraser website recently and I thought it was fake because it wasn't as good as the old one I had and the packaging was different. Also the use by date has changed from 18 months to 12. Obviously it just turned out that they changed what was a good product into a crappy version, so I won't be buying it again :(

Whatsername24 · 14/12/2015 21:01

In future, if you're prepared to pay £15 on Ebay you might as well just pay the extra 50p and order from Mac online - and if I remember correctly you can get free delivery if you select click and collect.

BettyBlueToo · 14/12/2015 23:01

I know, I just wanted to use my PayPal balance and it's so easy and clicky quick on eBay :) I tried it today and I do think it may be genuine. It has that nice Mac smell. I'll still take it and get it checked when I can but won't be for a while yet.

I have 2 MAC lipsticks bought in the last year from the MAC store - the labels are more like the one on the left with the name of the colour in small print - same size and font as the number but different to the print round the edges of the circle. The one on the right looks like somebody stamped the name on a blank label and I can't see the shade number properly - not just different size print but a bit smudged looking. Mine have MAC on both sides of the lid in silver and the texture is different , not just printed on, you feel an indent in the surface where the silver is if you rub your finger nail over it. MAC is printed in black on both sides of the silver barrel under the lid.
Mine aren't diva though so maybe packaging is different for diva? Otherwise I'd say fake, sorry.

WhyDoesGastonBark · 15/12/2015 09:47

Some examples of the differences in labels...
Top two were from the same House of Fraser store - fonts are different.
Bottom left was sent to me by MAC customer services following a complaint and has no code on it.
Bottom right was from John Lewis online ... Again a different font.

All the rest of mine are the same style as the ones here.

Can anyone tell if my MAC lipstick is fake?
WhyDoesGastonBark · 15/12/2015 09:49

In fact your "fake" is in the same style as my Sin which was sent direct from MAC about 6 months ago so maybe it is a newer style label

WhyDoesGastonBark · 15/12/2015 09:51

But just checked and all mine say MAC on both sides

rubyflipper · 15/12/2015 10:59

You can use PayPal on purchases on the Mac website.

BettyBlueToo · 15/12/2015 13:49

Gaston, that does look like my "fake" label. The only thing I'm unsure about is why it only says Mac on one side of the cap. I will get it checked but won't be able to for a while.

WhyDoesGastonBark · 15/12/2015 17:29

Yes that is the only bit that makes me wonder as I haven't seen it only on one side before
