Do you prefer the way you look in the mirror or on photos?

Someone mentioned this to me recently and it'd never really crossed my mind before!
Apparently we tend to prefer the way we look in a mirror because it's what we are used to seeing and photos are the true way people see us as mirrors obviously reverse the image.

When I look in the mirror I see a fairly delicate face with big eyes and plump lips, when I see photos of myself I see someone with a wonky face and big ugly lips!

Do you feel the same about yourself?

Absolutely! Also look much fatter in photos.

7Days · 11/12/2015 22:17

mirrors, definitely, specifically the mirror on the door of my wardrobe. Nice lengthening effect and good lighting on that one. Sashay out pumped & confident then look at the photos and wonder who is the troll squeezed into my dress with her arms around my husband!

Lottapianos · 11/12/2015 22:18

Mirror, by a long way. I think I'm pretty attractive but I'm extremely unphotogenic! I usually look pissed or like I'm having some kind of psychotic episode in photos

darksideofthemooncup · 11/12/2015 22:18

Definitely prefer mirrors to photos. In fact I can't bear seeing myself in photos especially as I have got older and fatter

abbieanders · 11/12/2015 22:19

Mirror. I can stop making that face in the mirror, but once a photo is taken, you can't change it.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 11/12/2015 22:20

Definitely the mirror. I look fucking awful in photos... but loads of people (including some I don't know) have seen some photos taken of me recently and said I look really pretty!

Go figure....

honeylou42 · 11/12/2015 22:20

Mirror i look crap in photographs , but what do other people see ? Mirror image or photograph . I guess its one of those strange things Smile

CremeEggThief · 11/12/2015 22:21

Mirror. I am NOT photogenic.

nancy75 · 11/12/2015 22:22

I prefer the way I look with a bag over my head at the moment! I look alrightish in a mirror but photos are a bloody horror show

ProfessorPickles · 11/12/2015 22:23

I really hope the only reason we prefer the mirror is because it's what we are used to, and that we are equally as attractive normally but we just hate how we look because we aren't used to it clutching at straws, i'm just ugly

I have that too where people say I'm pretty or stunning (gobsmacked at that one) but I look at photos of myself and I'm there with a wonky face and look really overweight.
It's baffling!

Definitely mirror. I think i look fairly pretty with nice eyes and decent bone structure. In photos I've got a squint eye, fat face fat as fuck body and I'm genuinely hideous.
I feel sorry for DH and anyone I've ever flirted with

Diggum · 11/12/2015 22:38

Mirrors definitely.

I asked DH (photograpy buff) once about why it was my landscape photos never look as breathtaking as the real scene in front of me- the mountains looming in front of me looked much further away, the dramatic scenery flatter. He explained it's because our eyes are round and so our brains actually alter the images the eyes receive in 3D to accommodate for this. Hence mountains loom larger to us in real life, and faces appear beautiful that can then look oddly plain in 2D.

Sooooo- photos are not what we see in the mirroelr (which does allow depth perception) and nor are they what other people perceive us to look like.

Which is a long winded way of saying I'm not photogenic but I comfort myself that I'm pretty decent in 3DGrin!

Diggum · 11/12/2015 22:40

"Mirror". No idea what a mirroerl is. But it'll be better than a photo anyway is all.

MrsDiesel · 11/12/2015 22:42

Definitely the mirror. I can pass as fairly attractive in the mirror but look awful on photos.

DramaAlpaca · 11/12/2015 22:45

Definitely in the mirror. I think I look terrible in photos, I'm just not photogenic, sadly.

Though I look back at photos of me when I was in my teens & twenties and I think I look lovely, which I certainly didn't at the time!

Whatsername24 · 11/12/2015 22:47

Mirror too, I look dreadful in photos - it's not just me being sensitive, my husband agrees that I'm not photogenic Grin

ClaudetteWyms · 11/12/2015 23:48

This is odd, as I definitely look better in photos than in the mirror! I'm not at all attractive, but when I see photos of myself I'm always pleasantly surprised I don't look as rough as I thought...

Just me then?!

WipsGlitter · 12/12/2015 08:04

Mirror. In it I look good. Photos - fat preying mantis with bad teeth.

Youvegottobekidding · 12/12/2015 08:10

Mirror - I'm thee most unphotogenic person on the planet.

VulcanWoman · 12/12/2015 08:11

Who is that person I see in the photo Confused

Humptythenumpty · 12/12/2015 08:19

Mirror. Mine is on an antique wardrobe and old so gives me a slight tan. In the mirror I am looking head on. Unfortunately photos see me as everyone else does.
In photos I am fat, have a double chin and I am so shiny. That's struck me recently. On a night out with friends I haven't seen for years I look as though my face has been in an oil slick. No one else was shiny . Dreadful.

metimeisforwimps · 12/12/2015 08:20

Mirror, try to avoid seeing photos of myself as it shatters my comfortable illusion that I am quite pretty and have so far aged well Grin

friedafilmer · 12/12/2015 08:43

Mirror. Hands down. Especially now that I gained weight.

SquadGoals · 12/12/2015 09:11

Definitely the mirror.

I used to be really photogenic and then put on 2 stone and I am no longer.

Although I've lost 2.8kg so far this week, so hopefully I will be back to being photogenic sooner rather than later Grin

Tate15 · 12/12/2015 09:34

I am unable to answer this as when I look in a mirror it immediately cracks. :(
