Why do shops try and persuade us we live in the Arctic at Christmas

looking at boden front page... its as if we are in sub zero temps all December, not in a wet country prone to milder winters recently.

Why dont they make lots of stylish rainwear rather than endless pom pom knittedy things that you might wear for a week in January?

Yes!

Things than you could wear in the rain, without looking like you're off to quickly scale a munro before lunch, that don't make you sweaty. Or rustle. That's what winter needs.

Right now I'd happily put on their entire range of pom pom knittedy things - am bleeding freezing.

Where do you live op? I'm in the north east and we get lots of cold days. Wet ones too so I'm with you on the rain gear!

All the snowflake jumpers. Cutest hats. Winsome models in cashmere shorts and slouch socks. You know.

I take it you're in the south OP? Up north there's been plenty opportunity for winter jumpers and and hats. You're right about the rain though. Coats that are warm and waterproof would be good as it seems you can have either or unless you want to look like you are walking up a mountain.

Blankets on top of duvets, and cashmere socks underneath sheepskin slippers!

The bloody Toast catalogue is the worst as if we are all living in ruined manor houses in the north of Scotland with nary a radiator in sight.

I layer. And wear those hideous socks made by JML they advertise on the tv in boots. Heat catchers or something

I love the Toast image. However in Scotland it is plain wet and windy. Where is the snow????

And at the opposite extreme, why do they assume that our summers are always hot and never cool and rainy. When DD was little I couldn't make a waterproof coat/cagoule last long because she grew out of them too quickly. I could never find a waterproof coat for her in the summer.

yes - sister used to live in Scotland and said summer clothes were utterly unnecessary - you just took your jumper off for a couple of hours in the middle of the day.

Even in the south I have worked out that i wear summer clothes proper for about 8 weeks of term

Not where I live. I have a lovely winter coat that hardly ever gets warm because I can only wear it in dry weather.

Completely with you. I'm looking for Christmas jumpers / tops for me and DCs for Christmas jumper day. I can only find really super thick, would be worn for all of 5 mins, type Arctic weather style jumpers. Everywhere has central heating. It's no colder than April unless you are outside for hours.

I'm in Scotland and it is freezing, and wet. My work heats the building to the legal minimum of 16 degrees, so I live in Uniqlo heat-tech tops under jumpers. I teach, and generally have students sitting in class in coats and hats!

It's 23 degrees in our bedroom. Ive got two duvets on, a hot water bottle and a sea salt woolly pulley and im drinking a hot drink and I'm just to say warm

2 mins after DH gets in bed, I'll be flinging off the pulley and sticking my arms out of the covers.

Where do you get these extra warm layers.

I'm not in Scotland btw.

even in canada you don't need warm jumpers cos the houses are so warm

I remember trying to find a nice jumper for dh there yrs ago and couldn't find any..then realised all the men in my family wear flannel shirts and ultra warm winter coats

As you've invited me ggirl, I am indeed a jumper (all called sweaters here) wearing Canadian resident Grin My office was so cold last week I got chilblains! But then I liked wearing warm knitted stuff in the UK too. I hate getting cold!

That's pretty warm for a bedroom. Do you have medical issues that require so much heat and so many clothes and covers?

It's not really a matter of temp as. Much as the styling of it all. Unless I'm watching rugby I'm not wearing bobble hats all winter, or snowflake jumpers or fur hats.
