Why do shops try and persuade us we live in the Arctic at Christmas

looking at boden front page... its as if we are in sub zero temps all December, not in a wet country prone to milder winters recently.

Why dont they make lots of stylish rainwear rather than endless pom pom knittedy things that you might wear for a week in January?

I live in Alberta, Canada and it's been bloody 'warm' here last few days, in the pluses! So god knows it must be warm back in the UK!!

BrendaandEddie · 06/12/2015 04:04
  1. But no cold wind in the south. You could leave a cost open

Bunbaker I presume Dowser means 23F? Agree 23 is boiling!
OP I definitely agree with you. I go to a church that is freezing in winter (and pleasantly cold in summer) even with the heating on and have a couple or Arctic weight dresses or jumpers so I can feel like "look, I am taking my coat off and feeling at home". Don't wear them the rest of the time and people at church must think I own 3 outfits!

Layering systems, surely that's where the money is....

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 06/12/2015 05:45

Right, you OPEN the bedroom windows and you layer lightweight cashmere.

What the hell is wrong with you all?

Natural fabrics in increasing weights is the way to go.

CheerfulYank · 06/12/2015 05:59

Bun 32F is freezing so I doubt she meant 23F! :o

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 06/12/2015 06:04

23f is -5C!

23C is pretty fucking warm.

So what did you mean??

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 06/12/2015 06:07

I think Dowser meant 23C, pretty sure it's not minus five in her bedroom.

Turn the heating off woman and open a fucking window.

CheerfulYank · 06/12/2015 06:29

Sorry, my message was to Peas.

In the US "room temperature" is generally set at 20-22.

goodnessgraciousgoudaoriginal · 06/12/2015 07:56

Christ, it's beginning to get bloody freezing here and it's not even officially winter yet!

A couple of years ago it was regularly minus 12 when I was leaving work (although admittedly that was outside the UK, but only by a couple of hours, and not even a couple of hours north!)

I agree there should be way more waterproof stuff, but YADBU about not needing clothes for bloody cold weather.

BrendaandEddie · 06/12/2015 08:25

We did used to have much colder winters didn't we? Ten years ago or so.

but as I keep saying. It's the Nordic styling that's more annoying

As if we're all about to go on a skiing holiday c.1965 before thermals and sportswear were invented.

Sloachie · 06/12/2015 11:26

I agree mostly! It has rained here every day for at least 2 weeks.

But temperatures have swung between 1 and 14 degrees so sometimes the woollies are needed! But no good in the rain.

this year I have a 'thinner' winter coat and it's much more versatile. If it's freezing I just wear more layers or a thicker jumper. My DS is also right into thermal t-shirts under clothes in cold days. Much comfier than thick jumpers!

Orangeanddemons · 06/12/2015 11:34

Out of the last 6 years here, all the winters have been bloody freezing except one. The last one was v cold despite it seeming to be a mild winter in the press and met office Hmm

I'm in S. Yorks and we get tones of snow too

BikeGeek · 06/12/2015 12:24

Funny, I was just looking at some sites and wondering why there's so much sleeveless stuff.

OnlyHereForTheCamping · 06/12/2015 14:15

Scandi boiled wool shot in glittering snow with Apple cheeked families etc = aspirational
Gortex clad women shot forlornly in the grey at the side of a rugby field = not so much

OnlyHereForTheCamping · 06/12/2015 14:19

I suggest the op wears a dressing gown and rusty crown to the rugby next week, it's a thing appaz

I'm in the south east and I wish it would bloody get cold. We've had two properly cold days, the rest have been damp, windy and mild. Outdoors I've been living in a waterproof trench coat with blouses or long sleeved tshirts underneath, anything more and I end up disgustingly sweaty within five minutes of setting out to walk anywhere.

I'd love to wrap up in warm jumpers, feel all cosy and go out for walks on clear brisk cold mornings. Instead I constantly feel damp, windswept and sweaty.
