Can I ask you what you think of these dresses?

Apparently velvet is in ( again )! Saw these dresses on eBay and I quite like them but since I wore velvet the first ( and second ) time round, they look dated to me! Wondered what the style gurus though of them? I love the style as they would suit my body shape, it's more the fabric.

Also, why are they so bloody cheap..?

Anyone ...?

patterkiller · 03/11/2015 20:21

Are you young and slim? Other wise they are very Margot from The Good Life.

Creatureofthenight · 03/11/2015 20:22

They do look dated.

reuset · 03/11/2015 20:24

I'd go further and say young or old, slim or not, would still look like Margot. They look a little like fancy dress too.

I'm glad to hear velvet is back in though

Destinysdaughter · 03/11/2015 20:25

Oh dear. Well it was news to me that velvet was in again, but maybe it will take off..?

I still have some black velvet dresses from the 90's. Maybe I can eBay them now...Smile

Velvet is lovely if it's proper velvet. I think they'd turn out to be a polyester nightmare.

I quite like the shape. Margo from the good life is bang on trend with the 70s revival.

Destinysdaughter · 03/11/2015 20:45

I don't think I've ever been 'bang on trend' in my life, maybe now's my time..! Smile

Anyone wanna buy a slinky black velvet dress..?

The colour style and elegance of the dress can not be faulted in anyway but I really do not like velvet. It's ghastly.
In another material tgey would be stunning, but thatsd just my opinion though.

ENtertainmentAppreciated · 03/11/2015 21:14

Whatever that fabric is, some kind of mock-velvet because of the way the light reflects and the swish of the skirt, it's not going to be flattering or live up to expectations.

You'd never use that much velvet fabric in a garment unless you're in a Scottish Widow advert of yore.

A velvet dress should be more sleek and luxurious; quietly understated and with an air of quality.

Orangeanddemons · 03/11/2015 21:18

They're velour not velvet. Velvet is much heavier, and wouldn't hang like that. The "velour described as velvet" thing really pisses me off. They are completely different fabrics and behave in different ways. Those dresses are what Juicy Couture trackies are made from

Destinysdaughter · 03/11/2015 21:20

I know but... Is it really so much worse than all the horrendous polyester that's been so prevalent these last few years, which really does look cheap and tacky...? ( grasping at straws) Smile

velourvoyageur · 03/11/2015 21:22

Sorry OP, I do like velvet but those dresses look like fancy dress to me....I think they're cheap because the quality will just be bad and thematerial thin.

Rufuswetwipe · 03/11/2015 21:23

Are you tall? I think velvet + maxi is very daring. You'd need to be 5"7 at least. Or comfy in ginormous heels?

Rufuswetwipe · 03/11/2015 21:25

Also how much are they? I can't see the price?

PacificDogwod · 03/11/2015 21:25

I like the shape of those dresses, but the material looks nasty and like a fire-hazard Grin. Sorry.

Personally, I am also reluctant to order from China for various reasons.
What is your budget?

There are some nice velvet (or velour Wink) dresses around at the moment.

Destinysdaughter · 03/11/2015 21:27

I'm quite busty so that style would actually suit me ( I think ), v neck, fitted waist and a long skirt. This is the problem in buying things off the internet. You can't feel the actual quality of them.

Desmoulinsonatable · 03/11/2015 21:28

I bought one of these for a theatre show. They are much less tailored than the picture suggests, bit more limp tbh. The material is awful - practically gives off sparks when you touch it. Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.

PacificDogwod · 03/11/2015 21:29

You need to have a look at St Bustier

Destinysdaughter · 03/11/2015 21:30

I literally had no idea velvet was fashionable again till today, so was intrigued to see what was out there and came across these dresses. I do still have some velvet from days of Yore, may have to dig it out so I can be 'bang on trend' Lol!

Desmoulin thanks for the heads up! Knew it was too good to be true...
