If you have long hair do you use things to put it up?

That doesn't make sense, I know! I have long hair. I keep a clip in my bag and put it up at times, also sometimes I do a pony tail, but it doesn't suit me to have my hair scraped back. Are there any alternatives?

I was in the habit of having mine in a loose French plait that came around to one side, over my left shoulder. Until bloody frozen!

My hair is very thick and curly, so needs heavy duty clips etc. to stay up. I often keep an "emergency hair bobble" round my wrist if I wear it down, so I can put it up if rain/wind/humidity does its stuff on my curls. I have a butterfly (?) clip which means I can twist it up, but really it's getting too long for that.

I cut my hair after years because it seemed pointless to me to keep tying it back so I now have shoulder length hair which I never tie back unless I'm washing my face or putting make up on.

I have very long thick hair but rarely do anything with it other than use a head band and a hair clip when its in the way.

Sometimes I do the half up half down thing but not often anymore.

No, I usually have it loose. Unless it's really windy or raining.

I have below shoulder length curly hair, and think curly hair is much easier to put up than straight! I sometimes ponytail with a bobble, but if I want to look smarter I tip my head upside down, and use a big hair slide to put it up, then go right way up and do the same with a smaller slide. Looks quite smart but a bit eighties! I also use scroopins to hold it if I twist it from the neck upwards in a chignoney type affair, as two scroopins do the job of about 20 normal hair pins!

Second the hair screws... holds securely. In boots.

I use a pencil, a chopstick or a biro.
I grab my hair as I I was going to do a ponytail, roll into some sort of bun and plant my pencil it.
It's great, quick to do and looks quite good I think.

These. I also like ... not sure what they are called .,, they are two snapon bracelets linked together with cloth. You have them straight at tje bottom of your hair... roll up and release they snap together to form a bun. Poundland do them.

I'll check out some of these ideas. I keep my hair down if I'm at work or out or socialising. I love my long hair and how it looks, but if it's windy, rainy, or I'm doing chores or whatnot then I pull it up. Sometimes at work if I'm at the computer a lot and it's a hot day I put it up too. It's a habit. And that's when recently I saw myself in a mirror at work and I didn't like the look. My hair is full looking when it's down, but it's thin and when I put it into a grip or pony tail it ages me. I used to know how to do a chignon when I was young but somehow got out of the habit. I had wondered if I just needed to wean myself off the feeling that I need to put it up on these occasions but I feel silly walking around in on a windy day with it flying in my face!

Then I lost a Lot of it through illness and now it's growing back I am determined to make the most of it, so will watch this with interest.

What I do now:

-Sometimes DH puts it in two French plaits for me
-I use a retro style bun cover with a pin through it (I like late 50s/60s style so this fits in with my clothes although it's old fashioned)
-I sort of pile it on my head neatly and secure with two long beak pins
-If I can't wash it, I tie a hair scarf around the top of my head as though I'm in a 50s convertible car

• I still like "ballet" buns but large and worn at the top of the back of my head
• I divide it into two low bunches below my ears, twist the ends of them while pulling upwards towards top of my head and pin them on top (hard to describe)

-old favourite of messy bun

Useful items for me are hair coloured kirby grips, the clips that "snap" close, beak clips at least 13cm long, hair coloured elastic hair bands and hair sticks.

If you have lots of hair, the "Ebuni" range are good.

Oh and I also dyed it violet when it grew back - I LOVE it.

I use all sorts, hair fork things, claws.....but I love Invisibobbles. If you get the clear ones they don't even show and they don't seem to scraaaaaaape the hair back as tightly. They really keep it up though. And don't leave a horrible kink when you take it down.

Either loose or just spend about five seconds putting into some sort of vague loose messy bun/ponytail type affair, with lots of bits falling out. Use just basic non-scratch hairbands. Very low-maintenance I don't like the totally scraped-back smooth look much.

I've now done some practice buns, I don't seem to suit the loose bun (falls out) with loose bits falling about (which get caught in the wind and just create an overall dishevelled in an not-cool way look). And although it looks like I have a lot of hair, it's fine so can't hold a pencil type thing, which I would love. It could be that I need to get used to the different look so I may try a bun as an actual all day do tomorrow. The gadgets could be good though and I'd hoped to get to a shop on the way home and buy some of these but I didn't have time so hopefully it will be a lunchtime trip tomorrow!

I do the messy bun. Today I had two slightly tidier buns atop my head, like Mickey Mouse ears! I use those screw pins, they are fab.

As an aside, do you ever find that if you just screw you hair up really quick to get it out of the way. It can look almost perfect... But then when you try to recreate the look a bit tidier and with more time it somehow never looks quite as good...

Bloody hell, I have bra strap length hair that is thick and wavy and it stays all screwed up in a bun scraped off my face at ALL times!
I have never heard of any of these implements, nor would I know what to do with any of them.
I have no natural skills for doing anything with it, have had very short hair (total disaster, too thick and wavy) and couldn't wait for it to grow again so I could just shove it up.
I wish i could learn some new styles but even after watching some YouTube videos I'm at a complete loss as I don't have octopus arms and I can't seem to work with my hands above AND behind my head

Mine is bra strap length, wavy layers. I use the screwpins for both messy and neat buns at the nape of my neck, with a long sideswept fringe loose. Although it looks as though I have masses of hair, it is fine and with the layers it only makes a small bun, so I sonetimes use a small donut, but make sure it is well disguised. I don't suit scraped back hair, but if I really want my fringe off my face I twist it up and clip it with one of those flat springy clips into a small quiff, which covers my parting, gives a bit of height and doesn't look scraped back. I do that a lot when the rest is down too. I am rarely eithout an emergency bunch band on my wrist and use them for messy buns, often as a pp said, they look better than ones where I've tried hard.

Alpaca yes! Some of my best hair dos are when I'm not paying attention to how my hair looks!
