If you have long hair do you use things to put it up?

That doesn't make sense, I know! I have long hair. I keep a clip in my bag and put it up at times, also sometimes I do a pony tail, but it doesn't suit me to have my hair scraped back. Are there any alternatives?

Im useless with hair but i can do this easily with my straight hair easy twist, half up half down

ScienceRocks · 11/06/2015 07:32

Thecatsm0ther, the slide thing is a bit like doing half up, half down , but once with your head tipped forward so you out the bottom half of your hair up and then again with your head in a or Al position and putting the front bit of your hair up.

NoIsNotACompleteSentence · 11/06/2015 07:49

Alpaca YES. I've lost count of the times I sweated and swore for ages to get something half decent on my head. Then at the end of the day I would just tie up my hair to go in the bath and DH would come in and say "your hair looks nice" Angry Smile

For people who find it difficult, for various reasons ATM DH has to do my hair a lot (he has mastered French plaits and fishtails which the teenage DDs like) and finds getting RL people his sister to demonstrate "up dos" , much easier than watching Internet/you tube tutorials.( The look of concentration on his face when he does it is very sweet - sorry, vomit alert Smile!

SpecificOcean · 11/06/2015 09:21

Sometimes in a pony tail with some long bits at the front or a couple of very thin plaits at the side or half up half down with a couple of grips or loose.
My hair does messy but "done" iyswim very well!
I straighten it sometimes but often leave it natural which is slightly wavy. Ideas;

Hahaha chchchange I think it's a rock with Quartz in or something. She's quite Woo but her products are great Grin

thecatsm0ther · 11/06/2015 12:32

Thanks ScienceRocks, I'll try it. I'd love to put my hair up, but don't like my face with all the hair pulled out of it Blush

EthelCardew · 11/06/2015 13:58

Ah, I need to sort my rat's nest hair out, will try some of these implements.

I have bit below bra strap length curly hair. It's getting coarser as I get older and is harder to tame.

Same as you OP, it's nice and full when down but squashes to almost nothing when tied up and makes me feel all naked!

I usually tie it in a messy bun (I wish it was as effortless as it sounds) or half up in a band or mini claw clip as it makes my curls waterfall nicely.

When it's being a beast, I brush it slightly and the top to straighten it smooth and do a side plait to keep it all together.

I wish I could master more styles to add to my repertoire but everything I like seems to involve back combing, sprays, or lots of pins that never stay in.

How come no one uses Kirby grips and bobby pins any more? They're increasingly hard to track down in the shops

NoIsNotACompleteSentence · 11/06/2015 14:22

Closer, I use them. (Although I thought kirby grips were the same as bobby pins, are they different?)

I find old fashioned high street chemists stock kirby grips and other interesting hair items. Think I have also seen them in Boots too.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 11/06/2015 14:47

Gah - you're right. I meant these pins

Nolim · 11/06/2015 14:51

I love the spin pin. Holds my hair better than a ponytail and looks more sophisticated.

DextersMistress · 11/06/2015 14:54

I've started wearing my very long hair like this.

Closer Boots sell them - I've just bought a box of 100 for DD's hair. She had the awesome ability to list them, But they're cheap as, so not a massive pain in the grand scheme.

I second hair forks too. Brilliant for putting DD's almost waist length hair up in a chignon type thing

MsBojangles · 11/06/2015 18:38

I really like that look, DextersMistress. How do you do it?

DextersMistress · 12/06/2015 09:54

I throw my head forward and start brushing it into a ponytail, but not tight to the head iykwim. On the last go don't pull the hair all the way through I'm not explaining this very well so when you put your head back, you will have a loose loop at the top.
I then pull the sides of the loop around to the front so it's a kind of donut shape and use loads of pins to keep in place.

I've made that sound really complicated but it takes about 2 minutes Confused

SophieHatters · 12/06/2015 10:37

Mine's sort of bra strap length but sadly it isn't very heavy - it's a bit fluffy, a bit wavy, and sort of in between colour.

Often I leave it down, which doesn't look great but it keeps my neck warm (hate having a cold neck!) and is easy.

Often I pin a bit to the side, using a little slide or those hair-coloured wiggly pins (not the pylon ones, the grippy ones with bumps) or sometimes I use a few of them to stick it up in a sort of bun at the back without really looking.

I grab it and twist it round a few times and just bung some pins in.

My late Grandmother used to use the pylon shaped ones. She had loads of very long auburn hair. I remember seeing her one night in bed wearing a nightie with her hair down, it was like a different person - I stared and stared! Smile

SophieHatters · 12/06/2015 10:38

BTW I can't wear my hair up on top or in anything tight - it hurts the roots. Feel so sorry for little children with pineapple hair styles. It makes your head so sore Sad

MsBojangles · 12/06/2015 11:07

No, I get what you mean DM Grin

I stick mine up like that too but without the brushing and pins - maybe that's where I'm going wrong Hmm

Becauseicannes · 12/06/2015 11:15

Yes, I use an oversized foam ring and thread hair through to make oversized bun. I get lots of compliments on it as it looks like it takes a long time to do. I also have used hair pieces or straightened it for when it's down.

Becauseicannes · 12/06/2015 11:17

Whoops, it's similar to dextersmistress pic but bun is tighter. My hair is long and thick.
