Basic t-shirts for Spring

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/03/2015 18:17

I need plain t-shirts in black, grey and maybe navy. Good quality cotton, possibly with a bit of elastane. Not too short and boxy. Scoop neck. Maybe three quarter length sleeves. Real shops, not Primark or supermarkets. Not too expensive.

Lots of the ones I've had in the past go all short and wide after a few washes, and the neck line goes saggy - any that avoid that, please?

Thank you. :)

I got a good one from M&S a couple of weeks ago. Fitted, round neck, sleeves to mid upper arm. Cost £8.
Has been washed 4 times, still perfectly in shape. Will be buying more.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/03/2015 20:59

Thanks for the warning, IG.

Don't like the Wallis one, sorry, KV.

Will look again in M&S - it's the sort of thing that they ought to be able to do perfectly, yet rarely get right.

Boden no good - cba with online.

I am so rubbish at doing links on my iPhone sorry Hmm a bit pricey but a very nice style and good quality.

i LOVE Remus old skool shopping thing

its so bonkers.
Grin
I went shopping ( well met for lunch) yesterday and the rl shopping thing seems so archaic. All that traipsing and queues etc

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/03/2015 22:38

I can be anything from a size 8 to a 14 in tops, depending on the cut/shop. It's easier to try on in store than it is to faff around with returns. I quite like shopping tbh and go early so queues are minimal.

I've just bought 4 (£4 each) from Next, exactly fitting your description & I'm a 12 too. They are v flattering. Can't comment on how well they last though cos the Great British Summer has launched in its usual fashion & I'm in a chunky jumper Hmm

Eustasiavye · 30/03/2015 08:39

I bought 2 from cotton traders. 1 in white and 1 in green.
They wash very well and have decent length sleeves.

Oly4 · 30/03/2015 08:54

White Company do the colours you want with elastane. Pricey but great quality

wrenster · 30/03/2015 12:30

I too have been after basic summer tshirts for as long as I can remember, but never find the fit/quality quite right.

However this morning my Boden order came and OMG I think I have found them! I ordered several of these in different colours and they are exactly what I'm looking for. Good quality, nice shape and fit, no lyrca and a variety of colours. I'm a size 6-8 and normally tshirts hang off me but these are great. Obviously not sure how they will wash yet, but certainly the nicest fit I have found ever probably!

I have news!
For years I have bought and binned and finally given up on Gap t shirts ad then last week I needed a little something to get to the £50 free postage so I chucked in a 'modern v neck' in navy. And its brilliant. Cotton/ modal, fitted without permitting medical examination through it, good length sleeves, not too long or short, proper v wihout flashing bra. Its perfect. Have washed once and its fine.
I know Remus wanted a scoop neck so I'm way off message here, but just to say, Gap may be back on the radar ... Its as good as my 8 year old long sleeve v neck which is STILL going and gets worn about once a week.
Otherwise, I too like the Boden ones but they are sometimes slightly short -depends on the year I think!

BikeRunSki · 30/03/2015 21:17

Interesting SonotKylie. I picked up a couple of long dleeved scoop neck Ts in a Gap Outlet store a couple of months ago and they've been great. At the time I was if the opinion that Gap T's were a bit pants, and thought "ah well, they're only £4", but I'm really pleased with them.

QueenCardigan · 30/03/2015 22:23

I have a few Dorothy Perkins cotton tees and vests from a year or two ago and I find them great. They've even accidentally gone in the tumble dryer and not shrunk.

QueenCardigan · 30/03/2015 22:23

Have you looked at fatface? I find their tees last well but not sure if they have plain ones.

SpaghettiMeatballs · 30/03/2015 22:40

Cos are quite long aren't they? That might work for me!

I've given up on Boden as they always come up shirt.

Excited to read sonotkylie's post about Gap. Gap tall tops are a great length on me but I've not liked the quality in recent years.

mewkins · 31/03/2015 17:12

I have a few from gap last year. Cotton modal mix, really nice quality with a wide neck. I think look out for cotton and modal mix as they hold their shape better.

MadameJulienBaptiste · 31/03/2015 17:24

I have several of the m&s elbow length sleeved, scoop neck t shit's and they would be perfect if only I was 8 inches taller.

I am 5 foot 2, curvy size 12/14 top. I've been bra intervention ed and I have a waist but unfortunately a tum too. So straight up and down tee tops are no good as I want tops that finish on my hip bone. Petite length. in several colours to wear with skirts in summer. 100% cotton, scoop or boat neck (not crew, look awful on me), long med or short sleeve but not cap sleeve. Bit of waist shaping if poss. No pockets, trims, faff or embellishment.
I've tried m&s, Wallis, boden, gap, asos, new look, small Debenhams near us, Dorothy perkins....... Help! !

sphynx · 31/03/2015 19:39

Jigsaw have some nice plain t shirts.

Discounted · 31/03/2015 19:49

I've got some "modern tees" from Gap that are lovely quality (same range as Sonotkylie's V-necks) . I went for the tall ones for extra length and they are mid hip on me (5'7"). Crew neck though.

BlueEyedWonder · 31/03/2015 21:01

Another Boden fan here. Crew neck and v neck both fit really well. Lots of colours. Wash well.

Boden are doing free delivery and returns so order a couple of sizes for a good fit?

FunMitFlags · 31/03/2015 21:18

I'm really disappointed with this year's Boden ones. Much thinner material than previous years and really see through. I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing them without a vest top/camisole underneath.

Ordered lots but they're all going back Sad

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/04/2015 16:20

Thanks all. None of them are, 'The ones' yet, sadly. I like the Whistles seam-back ones but they are £35 a pop and I'm not convinced that they are THAT good.

southeastastra · 01/04/2015 16:25

best are French connection and american apparel

MonstrousRatbag · 01/04/2015 16:39

These are very good, and wash well. I've got both the black and the white.

EsmeOz · 08/04/2015 18:03

Reckon that my best fitting t-shirt is a 'Pima cotton tshirt' from Jigsaw. V flattering and lovely material. Bit on the pricey side at the moment but I got mine for 17 quid in the sale.

Petit Bateau do adult clothes (not sure if that's a new thing?) and the t-shirts are fabulous - good length (not too short), fit really well, lovely colours (I bought bright-ish pink, navy and grey). They wash well too, although we haven't had the weather to test them out loads!
