I succumbed to the marksies 70s flare following a thread on here baaa baa baa. I now have them, tried them on, and convinced they look good. BUT the proportions are so different to anything else I have. So how do you get wearing flares right ?

I'm thinking:

  • always wear heels ( I'm 5 ft 2 so that's a given)
  • tops need to be fitted/cropped ( and def not the volume stuff you'd wear over skinnies)

Any other rules or ideas? Belts? Silk blouse? Coats, so they have to be short?

Pinterest links gratefully received!

Mary the M&S ones are proper flares. I tried a boot cut (gap) a few weeks ago and they felt complete mum jean whereas the flares feel entirely like I could be in that Gucci marketing photo that's all over the place. I am 5 ft 1 and am wearing them with a pair of block heel ankle boots which are maybe 2.5 inches but comfy enough for all day wear. I think I need them shortening by an inch. It was inconsiderate of marks not to do them in a short leg though.

Mary I'm a shortie and River Island do them in a short, I have the Brookes ones, they are not super long but you will need to wear heels with them. Or have them shortened if you want to wear with flats.

these are mine they are very flattering too.

MaryWestmacott · 22/03/2015 12:06

rubbish - went to try ordering the M&S ones and they've gone off the website Sad

RingtheBells · 22/03/2015 13:42

just picked mine up and had a quick try on, I'm 5"10 and 14L was about an inch longer than I normally wear with flats so will dig out some small heels to try. I am wondering if I'm a bit old for all this, but i am going to wear them with my knee length Next cardigan which I recently got in their tall section as it will hide the quite tight thighs. Bit concerned about looking 25 from the back and 60 from the front Grin

I did get the Next black flares but they are much more subtle than these Mark's ones.

I kept mine from the mid 00's. I think I'll leave them at tge cupboard a bit longer, though and get the most wear I can from the stuff on its way out first.

M&S ones appear to be back in stock in all sizes. I have 14L and they have a 34.5 inch leg.

I am wondering if it's no coincidence that these flares were removed from the M & S website yesterday when they had a '20% off everything' day... and they are back today & in stock. Then again, I am the world's biggest cynic, so it's probably nothing....

MaryWestmacott · 24/03/2015 12:58

been out all morning, just seen this, they are now out of stock again in all sizes. I think it's not meant to be!

I tried them and they made me look dumpy (I'm 5ft 9) - so sad as I love them on others

wasabipeanut · 24/03/2015 13:36

I bought that Next pair last week. They are so much better than their last round of skinnies and boyfriends. Wore them with navy knee high boots (underneath obvs) which have a 2 inch chunky block heel and it looked great - navy all blended and even DH said they looked great. Wore camel coat open on top. I rocked.

Trouble is I live in a small market town so no bugger noticed or appreciated it.

MaryWestmacott are you sure? Click on the colour first, I am seeing sizes in stock.

MaryWestmacott · 24/03/2015 16:04

oh, maybe it was a glitch as I can see it now! Will get some ordered...
