I succumbed to the marksies 70s flare following a thread on here baaa baa baa. I now have them, tried them on, and convinced they look good. BUT the proportions are so different to anything else I have. So how do you get wearing flares right ?

I'm thinking:

  • always wear heels ( I'm 5 ft 2 so that's a given)
  • tops need to be fitted/cropped ( and def not the volume stuff you'd wear over skinnies)

Any other rules or ideas? Belts? Silk blouse? Coats, so they have to be short?

Pinterest links gratefully received!

I reckon if they're skinny enough at the thigh, and not too long, they can look good with trainers (not running-style ones though, more chunky sole or converse). I wore some with Ash ones like these today.

oigetoffmycheese · 18/03/2015 20:29

I agree. The trainers have to be chunky and have a bit of height. They work well.

hmm2 · 18/03/2015 20:30

Defy chunky trainers or wedges heels look a bit naff and unbalanced in most cases

TheCowThatLaughs · 18/03/2015 20:33

I didn't say it would be easy but there are some good examples on Pinterest (imo anyway). The only problem is you might have to be kate moss to pull it off but apart from that, totally possible Smile

TheCowThatLaughs · 18/03/2015 20:33

I also think they look nice with flat sandals

oigetoffmycheese · 18/03/2015 20:37

I think you need to be a reasonable height to wear totally flat shoes with flares or really skinny. It's all about proportions after all

SconessMcFloness · 18/03/2015 20:40

VB is a bit footless too!

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowIt · 18/03/2015 21:00

Loving my flares. They seem to need a very high heel though.

So far I've found they've worked well with my tan biker jacket (with a slightly longer top underneath) and also with a longish unfitted jumper.

Looking forward to wearing them with summer heels.

Want to experiment also with more flares of different sorts ...

NoRockandRollFun · 18/03/2015 22:09

This made me cackle and reminded me of all the jeans threads on here at the mo. I'll be wearing culottes from now on I think!

I love that manrepeller thing. Heheh.

Floisme · 18/03/2015 22:57

I normally hate heels but I'll wear flares with platforms, which I love because they're so ridiculous, they make me smile every time I see them.

Love2Dance · 19/03/2015 00:17

Cold weather:
Skinny rib polo neck.
Fitted velvet or tweed blazer or fitted leather or suede jacket.
Poncho or at a push, open cocoon coat.

Warm(ish) weather:
Trench coat. Must have belt, either worn tied or with coat open and belt tied or looped through rear belt loops.
Slinky blouse, pussy bow for day, satin or silk and partly unbuttoned for night.
Fitted T-shirt or vest with skinny rib cardie.
As long at cut is right (i.e. not too long and not too voluminous) and boobs are on the small side: a smock-type top.

Fitted suede shell top or shirt.

I could go on...

MagicCarpet · 19/03/2015 09:10

I wear flares all the time. I'm slightly uncomfortable with the idea that I'm now doing something accidentally fashionable! Grin

Cold weather - skinny rib polo or spacedye knit. Blazer, camel coat. If Ali MacGraw would wear it, I probably would consider it.

Warm weather - fitted vest/top. A looser shirt, smock or something works, but tuck it in a bit at the front, or belt it.

Clogs, wedges, desert boots...

I just picked mine up from M&S and I LOVE them!
They remind me of the jeans I wore from Topshop in the early 00s - they were flattering then and now that they have a lpvely high waist they're flattering now too!

I will be wearing with heels as to get them turned up would ruin them for heels forever. Perhaps after the summer when they're not so new ill tut them into every-day-with-trainers jeans.

I just tried them on with a close fitting black and white striped top and they looked great.

FrugalFashionista · 19/03/2015 18:02

I just packed my Marrakech! Tried on a few outfits and they looked great both with this lacy top and this lightweight shirt. If it's cold, cropped sweatshirts and a navy cropped trench work really well as outerwear.

Tanaqui · 19/03/2015 21:07

I looked hideous in the m and s ones so thanks for the link to next- any other good ones?

Anjelika · 20/03/2015 10:18

I didn't like the M&S ones on me and bought the £28 Next ones instead. I also bought these from River Island which I really like. They had similar in Top Shop too. Also saw some pale ones in the window of H&M this week.

Has anyone resurrected their old flares? I've uncovered 3 pairs in the depths of my wardrobe, all of which are too short for heels, so I will be wearing them with flat shoes. I know some people are saying this is a bit of a no-no but I don't want to be in a position where I can only wear flares if I'm wearing heels. I am wearing one pair today with smart trainers.

I've bought some J brand love story and Paige flares on eBay. I still have the Reiss Angels from 2012 (summer) and some J crew high heeled flares. Wear them with trainers!

almondcakes · 21/03/2015 16:33

It fills me with rage that Next are calling a 33 inside leg extra long!! Has anyone seen decent flares for sale with a 34 or 35 inch inside leg?

thestylethatdecadesforgot · 21/03/2015 18:50

almondcakes, yes Topshop has flares in a 34" inside leg, just bought two pairs yesterday!

almondcakes · 21/03/2015 19:09

Are they nice Decades?

Trills · 21/03/2015 19:13

Those Next ones look a lovely shape, but I'm not keen on the pre-weathered paler bits dowt he front (or the whiskering at the top).

I'd like them in solid dark denim really.

oigetoffmycheese · 21/03/2015 21:31

Asos has some lovely flares and they are properly long

MaryWestmacott · 22/03/2015 08:20

ooh, I love the M&S ones, but I'm only 5' tall, think they will be far too long, has anyone short of arse seen some good ones? the closest I can find is the Gap bootcut, which don't seem flary enough. (the River Island ones are sold out in the short leg except for the size 6)

am I really just looking for bootcuts?
