Lipstick - is it worth splurging on?

I am trying to resist paying £17.50 for my favourite Clinique lipstick (creamy nude) but it seems the only one that is going to be suitable for me now. I used to like a No7 one but their lipsticks are all loud and bright now that they have revamped them, apart from the gloss ones which are fine and I do have a light pinky nude colour in one of their crayons but it doesn't stay on me long and my hair sticks to it when I have it loose.

Creamy nude by Clinique is THE perfect nude but the price goes through me. I have looked around other beauty counters in Boots which are reasonably priced and can't see anything to match it. Maybe I just need to persevere with the No7 crayon, people have given me compliments when I wear it.

It is worth it yes, do it.

I have loads of lipsticks but tend to wear Clinique Chubby Sticks everyday.

I have Medieval by Lipstick Queen which is my red & some No7 ones but they are mostly too bright for the school run. I also have some Max Factor nudes & only one of them really suits me but went through a bit of a nude obsession last summer & am done with it now :)

I like Lancome, Christian Dior and Estee Lauder. They are worth the money. Did try a couple of Bourgeois ones though and like them (aren't they made by Chanel?). Expensive brands just seem to have the edge on colour, staying power and finish.

Tom Ford lipsticks are my favourite and they're £37!

But I also love the Maybelline 16hr lipsticks at the more purse friendly £7.

squoosh · 01/03/2015 03:39

And Chanel, Chanel lipsticks are amazing.

kandyutt · 01/03/2015 07:00

Never wear it.

I do spend lots on lipstick. For some reason, even brand new cheaper lipsticks bring me out in cold sores. More expensive ones don't. I buy Estée Lauder lipsticks, and I think they're the same price as Clinique. I've also hot a nice Nars crayon which was around the same price but doesn't last anywhere near as long. I paid an eye steering £28 of so for a Chantecaille lipstick too, and that is amazingly creamy.

But yes, I also remember when a Clinique lipstick cost £10.50 (2000 or so?) and can never quite believe the price now when I buy.

For me the advantage with pricy lipsticks is that you get to try them on before you buy - I have so many cheap lipsticks that I was convinced would work but the back of the hand is sadly not a good substitute and I never wear, what a waste. I also like getting the sales assistant to choose a colour for me - sometimes they come up with a real beauty. The thing I need to stop is impulse buying, try the lipstíck on and leave the counter look at yourself in different lights before committing to the purchase.

Viviennemary · 01/03/2015 12:10

If it's the perfect lipstick then just buy it. Because it's not as if it only lasts a few days. I might try it myself. Grin I've yet to find the perfect lipstick.

There is a relatively cheaper brand called Kiko, it can now be bought online with free uk delivery I first bought some in Italy, from the shop. Look them up the texture is nice, i just orderded some recently and waiting on them I am very fussy too and love C.D. and Estee lauder but simply could not justify the price. Hate Loreal Maybellene etc, the texture is terrible.

woodhill · 01/03/2015 13:25

I'm sure Clinique lipsticks were still only £10.50 in about 2008 as I remember treating myself to one with a voucher. Have you noticed how all the Clinique stuff has really crept up in price.

I do like their make up though and I don't know any other makes with a similar texture to the buttershine one. I don't like alot of lipstick now and prefer a sheer look.

JAC25 · 01/03/2015 15:46

Most of it is full of toxic caarcenogenicstuff including formaldehyde and mercury. Lavera is organic and there are a few others.

flashystars · 01/03/2015 16:07

you can get new Clinique on ebay. They might have your shade?

ImABigOleBadLass · 01/03/2015 16:17

Love Lancome ones - have a brick red and the depth of pigment is amazing. i need a new lipstick presently and have a £20 voucher. I might try Chanel this time.

SASASI · 01/03/2015 16:57

I have loads of lipsticks - mac, Clinique, Estée Lauder, bobbi brown, bare minerals.
I have yet to find my holy grail lipstick - depends if I have fake tan on & what I am doing ie I might wear fuschia pink for a night out but a nude for day time.

At moment my fav nude is bobbi brown 'tulle'

I havnt seen / worn Clinique creamy nude in years, I had forgot all about it! It was always fav, def just buy it.

anya79 · 02/03/2015 09:51

If you have enough money to spare buy it. I think there is a difference between cheap and expensive lipsticks, in staying power and moisturising ability, plus the range of colours, but id still buy a cheap one if i.loved the colour.

Clinique are amazing for moisture and any lipstick regardless of price lasts for ages so i think the cost is worth it.

I prefer glosses but i have a habit of impulse buying. I.love mac lipstick colours so i bought a batch of them, i dont shop every few wks or season like many folks i know,so i see it as a good investment...least thats what i tell myself lol

anya79 · 02/03/2015 09:59

If u buy clinique or toiletries from boots a lot get an advantage card. I get clinique moisturiser its the only one that doesnt irritate my skin id love a cheaper one but yet to find something that works for me. Anways its almost £30 so i save my points and i get a few bottles free with the card.

Alternatives i use escentuals website, cheap smells (think they have a new name google old one it comes up) and strawberry net via ebay they often have deals on clinique look for your lipstick there. Online u need to be careful too many fakes especially on ebay.

XLIX · 03/03/2015 02:02

So my Clinique chubby sticks arrived today, love the colour but they seem smaller than I remember...

louwn · 03/03/2015 06:36

The MUA matte ones (a pound!) have excellent staying power.

auldspinster · 03/03/2015 07:44

I love mantrap too, except it's my idea of a muted colour. I've found a seller on ebay that sells Guerlain testers for a tenner so i'm in posh lippy heaven.

MsAspreyDiamonds · 03/03/2015 11:24

I bought Vamp by Sleek recently. It's the perfect my lip but better shade for me & it's only £4.99. It has staying power and can be layered up for a more intense colour.
