Lipstick - is it worth splurging on?

I am trying to resist paying £17.50 for my favourite Clinique lipstick (creamy nude) but it seems the only one that is going to be suitable for me now. I used to like a No7 one but their lipsticks are all loud and bright now that they have revamped them, apart from the gloss ones which are fine and I do have a light pinky nude colour in one of their crayons but it doesn't stay on me long and my hair sticks to it when I have it loose.

Creamy nude by Clinique is THE perfect nude but the price goes through me. I have looked around other beauty counters in Boots which are reasonably priced and can't see anything to match it. Maybe I just need to persevere with the No7 crayon, people have given me compliments when I wear it.

I love Chanel lipstick as well. Lovely hues, both muted and bright, and not too drying. I prefer Coco Rouges, have broken two Rouge Allure Velvets.

maybemyrtle · 27/02/2015 18:57

Yes. I didn't wear lipstick for years because my lips got horribly dried out or the colour faded unevenly or stained weirdly. Tried loads but the 3 that work are by Chantecaille, By Terry and Edward Bess. Blow both high street and Chanel, Dior etc out of the water.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 27/02/2015 21:06

Dior's nude lipstick range are the lipsticks for me. The perfect texture, not so thick that I feel clowny, not jammy & so glossy that it all comes off within minutes but with a sheen that doesn't settle into lines and creases in lips and isn't at all drying. Just smooth, light feeling lip colour in flattering shades. Lovely.

Lipstick is the one thing I'll spend on. Always worth it to have the perfect one!

woodhill · 27/02/2015 21:16

I just bought a clinique buttershine one. look out for John Lewis price matching 10% off which may have ended plus free gift with 2 products.

I remember when the lipsticks were £10.50.

BirdyArms · 27/02/2015 21:44

I rarely spend money on lipstick, have a few cheap ones and Clinique gift with purchases. But I did buy one horrifyingly expensive Chanticaille lipstick last year and think it is the first time in years and years that I have finished off a tube, so I am going to buy it again. Another vote for expensive lipsticks.

LadyB49 · 27/02/2015 22:28

I've never had an expensive lipstick. Wear Rimmel amethyst for years and wear it all the time, even in the house, always one in my pocket. One at the computer, one in the kitchen, one in the bathroom, one in my handbag. Use them down to the stump.

XLIX · 28/02/2015 03:18

Just spent a terrifying amount of money on Clinique Whole lotta honey and fresh lip treatment in honey tint. These are my go lippies. I try to go in the cheap and it never works, I have a make up bag full of rejects.

BritabroadinAsia · 28/02/2015 06:35

Elliptic, I havent, but a friend who loves her makeup was raving about her Charlotte Tilbury lipstick - she said best ever in terms of texture, colour etc

Brandnewattitude · 28/02/2015 06:42

If I buy an everyday reasonably priced lipstick I never seem to like it and it's a waste of money.

The only three I really like and would replace if they ran out are from Estée lauder, Mac and Bobbi Brown. And I don't generally spend a lot on make-up/skincare.

Notonaschoolnight · 28/02/2015 08:02

Elliptic be careful the tilbury stand is insanely popular with all the staff doing people's making leaving no one to just help customers left to my own devices I chose bitch perfect and now my 11 year old daughter has it as it's far too brown for me. I snarl every time I got past the stand now

Elliptic5 · 28/02/2015 08:39

Thanks Britabroad and Notona. I was interested in the limited edition Confession at Christmas but it wasn't available here, I certainly don't want anything too brown (not sure how wise it is to start an 11 year old with expensive make up tastes Grin - I know from experience as I have two, now grown-up, girls).

Think I'll have to plan a day in Edinburgh just for lipstick shopping. Smile

bigbuttons · 28/02/2015 09:19

CT does good eye shadow sticks, but the eyeliner is the worst I've ever used. The stand is always crazily busy, I agree. I don't know what their lippies are like. I think CT is very hit and miss.

ZaraW · 28/02/2015 10:07

Becca have some really nice natural lipsticks in the sale on Strawberry Net at the moment for US$12.

midnightmoomoo · 28/02/2015 10:23

Have a look on eBay! I often buy clinique lipsticks from there, sometimes they're the green ones from the offers but I figure no one sees me put it on so it doesn't matter that it's not the posh silver packaging.

avocadotoast · 28/02/2015 10:37

I never wear nude lipsticks, but I have a lot of reds/pinks that I've spent varying amounts on.

The most expensive was an Estée Lauder one I bought for my wedding. It is very, very good and it did stay in place most of the day.

But then I have some of the Rimmel Kate Moss ones that cost like £6, and they're great too!

So, I'm not sure whether price point has any impact on quality. I do often read reviews before I buy things though. And I think, OP, if there is one particular thing you really love then it's worth splurging on if you can afford it.

KatyS36 · 28/02/2015 10:47

I am a huge fan of having one or two of something that you really love and are perfect. That to me is far better value than lots of items that are not quite right.

That justified my 30 chantacaille lipstick :)

windchime · 28/02/2015 10:57

I buy Clinique when it is Bonus Time so I get some goodies too and that takes the edge off the price! YANBU. I only wear Clinique.

ChilliAndMint · 28/02/2015 12:18

Chanel is the best lipstick I have ever used . It costs a fortune I cant afford it mow, but in terms of staying power, intensity of colour it is worth splurging.

There's a clinique bonus time in boots in the not so distant future and there's currently one at John Lewis. John lewis also has ten percent off at the moment

Mixtape · 28/02/2015 17:30

My favourite lipstick is a Soap and Glory one - MantrapGrin
Anyone that doesn't dry my lips out, however I need a more everyday shade- it is a lovely red but sometimes a bit full on!

Generally I do think there is a difference in quality with the more expensive brands, or at least I tell myself that so I don't waste loads of money on stuff I don't need!

Lardylassnomore · 28/02/2015 17:47

Ten percent off at Debenhams too!

minipie · 28/02/2015 17:57

for those who like MAC - if you bring in 6 empties (of any product) you can choose a lipstick for free. a few exclusions (like the viva glam ones) but most are included.

Anonimousy · 28/02/2015 18:26

I only ever use Chanel. It's so expensive but I can't find anything else as good.
