Can I accessorise this dress the way I want or will it look ridiculous?

Bought this dress for a holiday Im going on soon. Its very bright yellow...tried it on, the colour looks good was very happy.
My friend (who I was shopping with), said it was a ridicuolous colour to purchase as Ill never find anything to accessorise it with/dress it with/make up to go with so it was a waste.
I have a lovely pair of silver strappy heels that I love, thought I could do strappy silver heels, silver clutch and necklace.
Make-up, simple black eyeliner and bright red lipstick.
I thought that combination would be brilliant but my friend just laughed and shrugged and said "well go ahead if you want to look ridiculous".
So, does it? Am I being ridiculous? My confidence feels a bit wobbly as Ive recently lost a load of weight and have now, just started to take an interest in fashion/clothes (now I can wear nice things and not tents).
So have I got it so wrong so soon?

Can I accessorise this dress the way I want or will it look ridiculous?

Your friend sounds horrible.

I love yellow, id wear it with a big statement necklace, the bigger/brighter the better! In fact I have a similar colour dress which I've worn to two weddings, both with different brightly coloured necklaces, shoes and clutch bags.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 17/02/2015 20:22

It seems your friend doesn't know as much as she thinks she does about color matching.
Navy blue accessories, would go gorgeous.
Well wear navy with my yellow dress and yellow with my navy dress

TallulahTwinkletoes · 17/02/2015 20:27

Sounds strange tht a friend would say such things. Is she definitely your friend?

I'm not of a tone that can wear yellow so no experience. Rita ora would wear statement lips with yellow. I'd wear a natural look. I agree navy looks great with yellow. Otherwise I'd keep low key as yellow is statement ebough Grin

Your friend sounds jealous. Congratulations on your weight loss. Have a fab holiday and don't send her a postcard. On second thoughts, send her a picture of you looking lovely in your new yellow dress!

HappyGirlNow · 17/02/2015 20:38

Love yellow.. Metallics will go great with it. And I love the idea of the red lippy Grin

brakespeare · 17/02/2015 20:45

Your friend? Maybe something to think about there.

Yellow is awesome. Go for it. Silver shoes go with pretty much everything.

MilkThistle187 · 17/02/2015 20:53

I love the sound of your dress with silver heels and red lips. I think your friend is jealous, poor thing!

weaselsquirrel · 17/02/2015 21:17

I agree that I think she may be a little jealous. I like the dress, perfect for a holiday Smile

winkywinkybumbum · 17/02/2015 21:45

Sounds great. I wish I could wear yellow. It just washes me out.

Agree about friend being jealous.

RockMummy · 17/02/2015 22:29

Wear it and have fun. I'm sure you will look amazing with your chosen accessories.

trufflesnout · 18/02/2015 02:03

Sounds great! Pink lips would be good for a contrasty statement too

Datahub · 18/02/2015 02:07

It's a vile dress

JeanSeberg · 18/02/2015 04:55

That's helpful Datahub.

I can't think of any colours you couldn't wear with it.

Nothing wrong with the dress, nice colour and I agree that you can accessorise it with silver, although personally I think gold would work better with it. Navy also good, and even white (although I think white shoes are still considered a bit naff, aren't they?)

Your "friend" though - can you get a different one? She doesn't go well with your outfit at all!

askyfullofstars · 18/02/2015 06:40

sugarfree I got it in the h&m sale.....reduced from £20 to £4!!!

Thanks for all your reassurances, I just feel really new to this and I finally found the right styles to suit and am now loving experimenting with colours and accessories.

We have been friends for about ten years and I think shes just adjusting to my new found confidence. While I was overweight I was so shy and nervous all the time, I hated myself.

Love the colour for a holiday dress. Silver or pewter would be a great accessory colour. A long chainy style silver necklace. Something silver with big white beads/feathers included would be lovely. enjoy the hol!

littlesupersparks · 18/02/2015 07:07

I'm not too sure about silver but red would probably be ok - I'd probably go a bright pink to contrast personally. Agree that navy would look very classy.

MaryWestmacott · 18/02/2015 08:35

oooh, that will look lovely with a bit of a tan! I'd go for navy accosories, but silver or tan might work. Teal would as well. Not sure about red lipstick, will depend on your colouring.

Sounds like a good bargain holiday dress though!

Shonajay · 18/02/2015 08:43

Silver accessories and sandals. Data hub, is that the "friend" we are talking about? The jealous one?

itsaysonthetin · 18/02/2015 08:47

I think red would actually look very good, providing it wasn't like - stripper shoes with a dress that tight.

But red flats, a red bag, red nails, but more natural make up would look fantastic. I wouldn't do both red, yellow AND silver, as it might seem a bit much.

A bright yellow dress like that would look nice with a navy blazer.

TheChickenSituation · 18/02/2015 08:47

Your outfit sounds absolutely gorgeous!

Your 'friend', not so much.

McFox · 18/02/2015 08:56

I've just bought a similar dress for going out this weekend and I'll be wearing it with matt silver heels and accessories, a black blazer and hot pink lips - your friend sounds exceptionally jealous to me, sod her, you'll look fab!! Smile

Datahub · 18/02/2015 13:11

its banana coloured,

SuperFlyHigh · 18/02/2015 13:16

Your friend sounds jealous...

You could do it lots of ways:-

Gold accessories, bronze accessories or even try some light yellow/lemon accessories. on the other scale try it (just try on in shops) with bright green (the bold sort of green) (on trend now) or pale green (prob won't work) and even orange.

I don't think I'd dare to wear bright yellow (got a H&M striped sun top though) - lemon/light yellow is my limit. but maybe as I suit bright red I should try a yellow top.

and what a bargain well done you! Smile
