Can I accessorise this dress the way I want or will it look ridiculous?

Bought this dress for a holiday Im going on soon. Its very bright yellow...tried it on, the colour looks good was very happy.
My friend (who I was shopping with), said it was a ridicuolous colour to purchase as Ill never find anything to accessorise it with/dress it with/make up to go with so it was a waste.
I have a lovely pair of silver strappy heels that I love, thought I could do strappy silver heels, silver clutch and necklace.
Make-up, simple black eyeliner and bright red lipstick.
I thought that combination would be brilliant but my friend just laughed and shrugged and said "well go ahead if you want to look ridiculous".
So, does it? Am I being ridiculous? My confidence feels a bit wobbly as Ive recently lost a load of weight and have now, just started to take an interest in fashion/clothes (now I can wear nice things and not tents).
So have I got it so wrong so soon?

Handminis necklace sounds great with it too!

bawabod · 18/02/2015 13:20

Fabulous dress and will go well with metallic accessories, and hang around with people that are happy about and will boost your new found confidence not those trying to dampen it.

Doobigetta · 18/02/2015 14:14

Lime green accessories would be good with the yellow.

AgathaF · 18/02/2015 14:40

Wear it with your silver shoes and enjoy it. You will look amazing. Well done on the weight loss. Perhaps time to reevaluate your friendship though?

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 18/02/2015 14:43

A light denim jacket would look nice over it, on cooler days.

JeanSeberg · 19/02/2015 03:55

its banana coloured

10 out of 10 for your observation skills data! And the point of you on this thread is?

BallroomWithNoBalls · 19/02/2015 12:30

Oh dear, I'm afraid I do have to agree with Datahub.

I like yellow but the shape and fabric looks really cheap and tacky.

What about this ? Comes in a lovely pale yellow.

BallroomWithNoBalls · 19/02/2015 12:42

Or this accessorised with a long silver necklace, silver strappy flats and a thin tan belt would look gorgeous on holiday.

BallroomWithNoBalls · 19/02/2015 12:51

Gorgeous

polyhymnia · 19/02/2015 13:35

Don't like yellow myself but only because my colouring means I can't wear it. Silver, pewter, navy all good.with that. Perhaps darkish tan too.

Guess you're going to wear it in the evening if you're thinking high heels not flat sandals as can't envisage any daytime holiday activities that could be done in heels - but perhaps that says most about the sort of holidays I go on and my own dislike of / discomfort when wearing heels!

Pootles2010 · 19/02/2015 13:39

I have no clue about clothes but it looks nice to me! I think the weight loss is telling here... your 'friend' is used to a fat friend, and doesn't like you as 'competition'. Time for new friends maybe?

TheHandbagOfGlory · 19/02/2015 13:45

I was watching a woman on YouTube earlier from Australia who was wearing yellow with a red lip and she looked amazing! Now you can wear what you want so have fun, don't let someone bring you down.

It makes me so sad that someone would say something so cutting to a friend, I just don't understand why people do that.

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/02/2015 13:49

I really like that, though it would make my waist look lumpen, I m off to look for a yellow dress to suit me now, for spring/summer daytime.

TSSDNCOP · 19/02/2015 13:51

On holiday I think it'd be lovely. I'd wear it with tan leather sandels, gold accessories like thin gold hoops. Make up would also be light.

Greengardenpixie · 19/02/2015 15:59

I agree, think your friend is jealous. Its not my colour as i am sallow but think it will look lovely with a tan and metallic sandals. Would be tempted to try both bronze and gold rather than silver. Silver is quite a cool colour. Not sure about that contrast but it may look fine :)

BallroomWithNoBalls · 19/02/2015 16:42

I can only assume myself and Datahub are looking at a totally different picture to the rest of you Confused

I agree your friend sounds like she was being nasty, but honesty is best and honestly that dress is dire, it wouldn't look good on a size 6 ultra cool teenager.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 19/02/2015 16:46

personally I'd wear a little dress like that dressed down - so tan/brown sandals and a denim jacket. But I am an old gimmer. Silver goes with everything though. I have a pair of silver shoes and a pair of pewter ankle boots and I don't think I'll ever have to buy 'going out shoes' again, they go with everything!

askyfullofstars · 19/02/2015 18:15

Thanks all. Grin Never thought of some of the combinations suggested before I might give them a try.
I know its not very clear in that (somewhat awful) picture, but its not a fitted dress, its fit and flare, something Ive found to be just perfect for (my new) bodyshape.

Your friend sounds mean, but, honestly, I think that dress will be very difficult to wear and to make look nice, unless you are very, very slim and quite flat-chested.

Please don't wear it with lime green, or red, or loads of make up, unless you want to look like Carmen Miranda.

A faded denim jacket, flat tan sandals and v natural lipstick 'might' work.

trufflesnout · 19/02/2015 22:52

I wouldn't wear a denim jacket with it, if you want to dress it down I'd go with an oversized & slouchy grey cardigan. If you're dressing it up, don't wear it with a jacket. And still prefer pink to red if you want bright lips Grin

Amethyst24 · 19/02/2015 23:16

There is nothing wrong with the colour of that dress - yellow is fab. However if you've lost weight recently and are still bigger than about a size 10 I'd worry about what bra would go with it and also about how short it would be if you're even slightly tall. But given you've bought it, I assume you've taken those things into account, and agree with PPs that your friend is jealous and nasty.

Kikiw123 · 19/02/2015 23:47

I would go for silver for the holiday and then wear it with navy here, perhaps a nice fitter blazer and navy wedges?

askyfullofstars · 20/02/2015 06:38

Im now a 14. But the dress is literally just above my knee (im a shortarse). The criss cross at the back goes between two straps so an ordinary lemon coloured bra looks fine x
