What's wrong with jeans and sparkly top for a night out?

I have a rare night out this weekend and bought a pair of pale grey skinny jeans and a sparkly top yesterday to wear with heels. Got home, tried it on, fine.

On a thread I read later, someone said something like, oh that's better than going out in jeans and a sparkly top. Now I feel like taking it back!

What's wrong with it and what's the alternative when a dress is too dressy?

It's a bit bridge and tunnel, but much better wear something that suits you and you like than something hip just because it's hip.

This was my christmas top worn with black skinnies and boots and got LOADS of attention Wink. I'm into serious sparkles though. Love me a sequin.

Where I go the women tend to be v dressed down in jeans, or tube minis, with boots or DMs and the men tend to look like this.

Love the MV Victoriana!

Greenstone I was shocked I tell you at how nice the MV stuff was! Smile

I wear leather look jeans, a gold sequinned slouchy vest top and high court with a fitted leather biker jacket - I might be wrong but I think it looks good and I'm 40 but tall and size 10

In the interests of research, I have just been to the pub. I was wearing skinnies, black boots and a black cashmere jumper. Most other women seemed to be in jumper dresses and knee high boots. It is very, very cold out and it was just the local - more in the way of pints than cocktails, to set it in context.

not a fan of anything sparkly on me as I think it looks cheap. probably just me though.

BlueEyedWonder · 07/02/2015 07:28

What people are snooty about is they think such an outfit smacks of "a mum on a rare night out".
Since having children, and getting older, my social life has changed. I no longer buy "going out" clothes. Instead I will change an outfit from a day to evening look by changing shoes, accessories or make up.
I often wear pleather skinnies and a jumper to the pub, or jeans and a blouse. If you're happy with your outfit, go for it!

BrandyAlexander · 07/02/2015 07:45

There is absolutely nothing wrong with sparkly top and skinnies. The majority of women I work with are in their 20s and on a night out that's precisely what some of them wear.

Being put off an outfit by the caustic tongue of a random stranger where you have no idea what they look or dress like, is, just, well odd. Seriously, have more faith in your own taste.

Inthedarkaboutfashion · 07/02/2015 07:53

There is nothing wrong with skinnies and a sparkly top but I personally wouldn't wear that combo on a night out mainly because I wear skinny jeans most days as casual clothes and I like to dress differently when I go out.

Armpitt · 07/02/2015 10:53

NEVER a wrap dress for going out, or anything from White Stuff, I would have said Boden until recently but they have a few plain tops that might be ok.

That said, I saw a woman out in her version of a 'naice top' the other night and it was the Boden Ravello that is my work wardrobe staple

AmberNectarine · 07/02/2015 12:26

Well, I don't tend to wear skinnies/sparkly top on a night out but then on my last night out (Tuesday) I wore a leopard mini skirt, a grey marl tee, a black suede fringed jacket and ankle boots - probably not for everyone! I don't really have a 'standard' going out look, but that is because I go out quite a lot and I have a lot of clothes so I'd get bored quickly.

I think jeans and a sparkly top is a good fail safe outfit that works in a lot of situations.

Armpitt · 07/02/2015 14:25

Ooh Amber. Your Twitter has been hacked btw

Bodicea · 07/02/2015 14:47

In my head it is a bit noughties. It was all I ever wore in my Uni days. Dresses just weren't as common then. Saturdays were spent shopping in river island for a new cowl neck top for next night out ( to go with low rise/ it off waist jeans).
Now it's a bit mum going out - ( probably as mums in their 30s prime time for going out was the noughties and they are dressing like they did then )

GuiltyAsAGirlCanBe · 07/02/2015 14:51

Black skinnies, heels and a nice top is my uniform for going out especially if it's not a big do...

LeahSmith · 07/02/2015 14:54

That's what I would probably wear! People look ridiculous shivering in a tiny dress in this weather!
As long as you are comfortable with what you're wearing who cares what anyone else thinks? Xx
