What's wrong with jeans and sparkly top for a night out?

I have a rare night out this weekend and bought a pair of pale grey skinny jeans and a sparkly top yesterday to wear with heels. Got home, tried it on, fine.

On a thread I read later, someone said something like, oh that's better than going out in jeans and a sparkly top. Now I feel like taking it back!

What's wrong with it and what's the alternative when a dress is too dressy?

I wouldn't take fashion advice from here either, but you'd all probably hate my outfits too. That dress is revolting though.

Skinnies and a sparkly top? If it looks great and you're happy then go for it. Don't worry about 'our' opinion! I'd wear similar for afternoon drinks (a'hem, getting slaughtered in 'spoons with mil) but not on a night out, probably as it's not exactly right for a mosh pit Grin

I have never worn jeans and a sparkly top together, because for me, jeans are "dressed down" and sparkly top is "dressed up".

Then again, I don't really wear jeans at all, because I feel self conscious that my legs are short in comparison to my body and a jeans / top combo only accentuates that.

I'll wear jeans with a t-shirt occasionally for every day stuff when I don't care how I look, but otherwise it's dresses all the way for me. They don't have to to be dressed-up dresses (and for what it's worth that black dress is really tacky). I lean towards jersey wrap knee length dresses, which flatter my figure.

Body shape has so much to do with it IMO. If you feel confident in jeans and a sparkly top, don't worry about it.

I don't do 'sparkly' tops but skinnies and a 'nice' top (usually a silk t-shirt, or Whistles t-shirt) is one of my favourite going out to the pub outfits. I'd look too dressed up in a dress.

SuperFlyHigh · 06/02/2015 13:44

To be brutally honest if I go out, I wear dark navy skinny jeans or black ones (stretch) and depending on time of year/mood:-

posh stretch black v-neck sweater or black tie back neck top/t-shirt and H&M black leather biker jacket and converse. always pretty pendant (bird one) over top.

OR - tops like my Warehouse silk/oriental long sleeved top or other evening tops. I don't do sparkle much though in evenings. I sometimes do. oh and always ankle boots or knee high.

In fact new favourites of mine for evening are black harem trousers (Warehouse) with variety of tops (Miss Selfridge, various like strappy sequinned, Aztec brights strappy or silver foil short sleeved cropped t-shirt (surprisingly flattering and the sequinned and silver both bought in sale). again add boots

Well the new skinny jeans were a lovely fit but dip dyed which I only noticed in the light and looked a bit 70s. So I took them back. The sparkly top again lovely but maybe I have got too many and it's time for a change.

So I am having a trying on session with a few dresses. I know young people don't care but I am worried about being cold.

I go out so rarely that I don't think I know what to wear. But from everyone's comments I think I can wear anything (except that boohoo dress.)

I feel a bit sorry now for the op of the dress thread because now there are 2 threads saying how much they hate her dress

pootlebug · 06/02/2015 14:06

Where do you all get your tops-for-wearing-with-jeans-and-going-out-in? I end up going out in a dress because I can never find dressy tops I like…

SuperFlyHigh · 06/02/2015 14:21

pootlebug

I get my tops from Zara - having a brain fog now - also Warehouse - also friends get theirs from Mint Velvet but I don't like those...

SuperFlyHigh · 06/02/2015 14:22

depends on dressy pootlebug - I have a gorgeous metallic animal print with chiffon sides Zara one (£19.99) that I got last Xmas. I consider that dressy and evening though.

When ai think of jeans and sparkly top I would think of middle aged women, size 14/16, short hair, going for a pint in the local. That is the group I see in those outfits where I am. That isn't really the group I am in so would dress very differently.

Floggingmolly · 06/02/2015 14:31

I must be somewhere totally different then, kirby

kirbymaster · 06/02/2015 14:33

I don't know when the sparkly top and skinnies combo became the middle aged uniform. If you look around on a night out entire women groups are all wearing similar combinations of it.

NickiFury · 06/02/2015 14:48

I live in West London and see all the beautiful young women wearing skinnies, sparkly tops with boots rather than high heels usually. But then these same girls are all wearing the dresses/tunics/long tops with leggings and boots that is so frowned upon here. I think there is a "uniform" that a large number of MNetters like to wear and I don't think it's as stylish as they think it is Wink.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/02/2015 14:50

I'm middle aged and have short hair, but am a size 12. Clearly I need to invest in sparkles immediately. Hmm What do the middle-aged women who have long hair wear then?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/02/2015 14:50

And since did women become a 'group' because they are a similar age, or size, or have a similar hair length?

TheCowThatLaughs · 06/02/2015 14:51

I'm middle aged with short hair and I haven't even got a sparkly top Shock

Nextwednesday · 06/02/2015 14:52

I'm really put off now.

I meant that go out in groups. Surely you must have them in your town? 6 or 8 of them out in a group in a sat afternoon drinking the wetherspoons wine deal in the day. They nearly all have the above size/hair/outfit combo going on.

NickiFury · 06/02/2015 14:54

I think that might just be where you live. Where is that by the way?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/02/2015 14:56

'That isn't really the group I am in' suggests that you see yourself as separate from some dreadfully unstylish 'group' of others.

Puts on sparkles and leaps out to Wetherspoons.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 06/02/2015 14:57

Hmm, no such goings on in my neck of the woods. We're all vair classy birds and have a mixture of long/short hair, different shapes and sizes, too.

NickiFury · 06/02/2015 14:57

OP, this is the kind of look I see when I am out and sometimes wear myself.

Frumpy? Middle aged? Size 14/16?

I think not.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 06/02/2015 14:59

Remus, are you meeting your group of similarly-clad middle-agers Wink

Greenstone · 06/02/2015 15:00

Please can we have some links to great going out tops. My preferred style is kind of in my dreams luxe grunge. The Maje kind of look but preferably not with the price tag.

Night out coming up and was thinking of distressed slim boyfriend jeans with these shoes and some kind of black top with sleeves...

dexter73 · 06/02/2015 15:00

Remus is off to Gala Bingo I reckon Wink!
