Coat for 3yo boy this season...any recommendations please?

I've seen some really nice ones on the next website but as I'm ordering from abroad I can't go in and try. Looking for something warm and dry with a bit of style for a little blondie boy!

Any recommendations from experience of either this year's Next or any other good coats available this year would be much appreciated. Price range 20-40ish pounds. I.e. Not Polarn o Pyret!

Go go go mumsnet!

I got DS this one from Asda. It's lovely and warm and covers his bum. Plus the bright orange colour means he is very easy to spot!

Mountain Warehouse or Lands End are pretty durable.

BigRedBall · 27/10/2014 08:32

Watching this thread closely as I can't find a nice warm waterproof coat for my almost 3 year old DS.

I didn't like the colours and feel of the coats in Next. They were way too rigid on DS on the arms and weren't allowing him to move around freely.

wonkylegs · 27/10/2014 08:37

DS has the yellow version of that Asda coat and it's been fab. His is a year old, has worn & washed fabulously and is still going strong (I bought it a bit big).
It's lovely and warm too. It's better quality than the M&S one he had the year before.

ThisBitchIsResting · 27/10/2014 08:40

Try TK Maxx - I got a fab Quiksilver ski coat for my DS.

foxybingodotcom · 27/10/2014 08:50

Oh but but but, I have a 3yr old blondie boy, tried on every coat in Next (lovely in the book, horrible on) every coat in Debenhams, M&S, everywhere. Then I ordered this one from Polarn O Pyret with a discount code it in budget - in Dark Storm, it is beyond gorgeous on.

foxybingodotcom · 27/10/2014 08:50

yy BigRedBall - every one made my DS walk like a robot.

ProveMeWrong · 27/10/2014 08:55

Right you've all put me off the Next ones, thanks! He is already a coat avoider, so definitely don't need one that makes him move like the Michelin man!

I do like that Polarn o Pyret one, but the Asda one seems such a bargain too! Thank you! So much better with recommendations than going in blind!

We have the blue version of that asda coat for DS1 :) in fact we've always got his winter coats from there. They are warm, wash well and come in some great colours. Even DS likes it!

itstheyearzero · 27/10/2014 09:01

It really is lovel, and quality wise its definitely as good as Next and M&S. Plus it washes really well too!

startwig1982 · 27/10/2014 09:03

I've just bought ds the 4 in one coat from Jojo's. We went on holiday last week and it was perfect. Warm, waterproof and with lots of room for growing.

I'm not sure if they deliver abroad, but I've bought the dinosaur print one for DS. Really pleased with it. Longer at the back to keep bottom warm, decent hood and feels like it'll last well.

Magpiemystery · 27/10/2014 09:07

Another vote for the 4 in 1 coat from Jojo, it actually waterproof and can a lightweight jacket next spring. Perfect

Our DSs both had mountain warehouse ones last year that lasted surprisingly well.

We splashed out on Didriksons ones this year which are brilliant but a bit more £££ (I think they were £50 each), but we have a long school run and no car now.

evertonmint · 27/10/2014 09:10

The Jojo ones are brilliant. First year my DS is too big for them and I'm gutted as he's had various designs of them for 5 winters now. DD has had his hand me downs each winter and they'll be good enough for DS2 as well. Brilliant coat.

LesleyKnopeFan · 27/10/2014 09:12

I saw some lovely kids coats in Monsoon the other day, not sure if they ship to where you are. Also, m&s do some pretty good coats too, not sure about the boy range though.

My go to is always H&M, reasonably priced. Nice styles. I also like Zara, their girl coats are super warm and well made.

I love coats, me. I've bought my kids 2 so far this year and they already have immaculate ones from March this year.......I'm currently sourcing 2 for myself......

ProveMeWrong · 27/10/2014 09:17

Ooh I might buy one from JoJo in the next sale for next year in a bigger size then. Delivery is 13.50 to here which seems very steep when for that price I can almost pay for the Asda coat and delivery! (£17 in total). Sadly Polarn o
Pyret don't deliver outside of the UK I have now discovered. Keep them coming. I like the Asda but not sure orange will look that great as he is so very pale and blond with brown eyes.

I've always found lovely coats for DS in Sainsburys and Mothercare. He did have the Jojo one when he was younger and they do last and wash well. The only problem I found was that the front is shaped and it got short on him very quickly.

Agree that Next coats tend to be stiff and a bit too solid for small kids.

wonkylegs · 27/10/2014 10:03

The asda coat isn't just in orange other colours include: green
Or
grey and blue
Or
blue
Or
dark red

ProveMeWrong · 27/10/2014 10:12

Ah no, delivery for Asda is £10 too! Thought it was £5! Can't decide now whether it's worth £10 delivery although it is still cheap. It just seems a waste when Next delivers for about £3. Hmmm.... It is all cheaper than buying anything in this country though!

Ds chose this from next, and he seems really happy with it, he is older than your ds, but is a coat hater!!

We get ours from Trespass, about 25 on Amazon. DS has a blue/white one and DD has a white one with big spots on. She looks fab. They're padded/fleece with detachable hood andthey're waterproof. They also come down to mid thigh, at least to start with.

yazzy85 · 27/10/2014 11:07

We bought a quilted navy one for ds from m&s but its more of an autumn jacket not very warm. Likewise had problems with thr next onee being too stiff. I am liking the look of that Asda one, doesn't look too bulky.

ProveMeWrong · 27/10/2014 17:53

I looked at Asda but given its only in Orange in his size and postage is a tenner, that doesn't quite work.

Anyone actually bought a decent code from Next this year for boys that they like and looks good? Everywhere else seems to be charging me between 8-15 pounds for delivery so Next would be far and away my preference if there's a good warm none stiff one. I really don't like the Trespass for a 3yo, I think they look a bit too grown up ifyswim says she, desperately clinging to babyhood

These are great jackets, my DC have had many of them. They are warm but light, the sleeves are great because they are not too tight when you have jumpers or fleeces underneath.
