Here we are again.....

HerbsGrin at beardy philosophers. Seriously though well done on teaching adults - even more nerve wracking.

NUFC69 · 06/11/2014 19:22

Sorry you're feeling down, Herbs, just hang on in there. It will be worth it all in the end. What have you done to your foot?

Stropps, what a shame about your DD's DFr, she obviously has problems of some kind. I am glad that DD's coping.

Rose, well done to your DDs.

I am replete: just had a lovely beef and mushroom fried rice for dinner, followed by strawberries and salted caramel ice cream - never tried the ice cream before and can highly recommend.

bigTillyMint · 06/11/2014 19:38

Herbs, wishing you strength. PGCE's are notoriously challenging.

Stropps, sounds like there must be something behind all the stealing. Having pots of money does not equal happiness. Do you know her parents?

NU salted caramel ice-cream is the business, isn't it? Had it en France for years!

I am whacked and boggled after the sixth form evening at our local comp. About a million people there. And apparently you can't get in to do A'levels there unless you get an A in most subjects - hence their pass rateHmm

NUFC69 · 06/11/2014 20:47

Sympathies re your evening, BTM. Schooling is so much more complicated than it used to be. There was never any question with the DC that they wouldn't just continue on at the local comp.

hattymattie · 06/11/2014 21:05

BTM - if it's your local comp aren't they obliged to take you?

I love Haagen Daz salted caramel - it may have even passed pralines and cream in my affections.

bigTillyMint · 06/11/2014 21:09

Hatty not for sixth form in London. You have to apply and wait to see if you get an offer - conditional or unconditional. Apparently!

bigTillyMint · 06/11/2014 21:11

NU that is exactly what DDs friends parents and I were saying. So much stress nowadays.

addle · 06/11/2014 22:33

blimey BTM, this has all gone over my head for the last few weeks. will have to ask your advice. does your DD have a preferred destination?

Herbs and Stropps, I am so impressed with what you're achieving - sounds incredibly hard but worthwhile.

MI - when are you off?

may I add my name to the list for 5/12 please?

CointreauVersial · 06/11/2014 23:29

BTM - the DCs' current school has an Outstanding 6th form, and won't take anyone, even if they are already in the school, unless they have xx points. I'm trying not to think about next year.

Strops - awful about the stealing. Sad, though. There is obviously an underlying reason.

You mentioned Barbara Woodhouse....funnily enough, she approached DM back in the day, wanting a couple of outfits (DM was a fashion designer). But she turned out to be so unpleasant and demanding that DM eventually told her she just couldn't work with her, and it would be better if she took her business elsewhere. I think that is one of only two occasions in DM's working life that this happened. DM's other "famous" customer was Terry Wogan's wife, who was lovely apparently. Terry used to sit outside the house in the car while she was having her fittings Grin.

Herbs - I don't know how you do it - I think I'd just curl up in a ball if I had all that on my plate.

Actually, I'm a bit close to the edge myself - workwise I have just had two monster high-profile-short-leadtime projects dumped on my desk, which will consume all of next week and I haven't planned for. And I am approaching a complete melt-down about the new bathroom. The plasterer is AWOL, I forgot to order a skip, the wet-wall panels we chose are out of stock, the plumber is being so laid-back he's virtually horizontal and the flooring company have decided they can't now fit us in until after Christmas. Meanwhile the bathroom supplier is champing at the bit to deliver everything. I have had a tension headache for the last two days. Why didn't anyone tell me that this is the busiest time of year for tradesmen? Why didn't we wait until January? It all kicks off next Thursday (if I haven't had a stroke by then).

Oh, and the gas company, having titted about under the road outside the house for the last month, have chosen the current cold snap (i.e. tomorrow) to cut the gas off. Angry

Small world CV - my Dad's secretary used to babysit for the Wogans!

I am off to Pareee on an ungodly hour Eurostar. It seemed a good idea when I booked it...

Blackduck · 07/11/2014 06:05

CV I remember that! I lived with the bathroom in the dining room for three weeks.....
Luckily skip ordering was done by my builder - I lived with old bathroom on the patio for three weeks (no point getting the skip until you have finished!)

Enjoy Paris MrsS...

Here I and one member of my team are trying to write an audit report (the second report is being written by a team of 6) and am receiving unhelpful conments from the co-ordinator. To my question 'what goes here?' The answer was 'I don't know' AHH!!! May be find out?!

hattymattie · 07/11/2014 07:19

Next time if you've got time for coffee or lunch Mrs S let me know. Have fun (although it's a horrible rainy day.).

motherinferior · 07/11/2014 07:20

I've just realised I have double the work I thought on the week I return and am panicking. I'm quite good at panicking. Fortunately some of it is doable in advance and some other bits I may beg and plead for extensions on.

bigTillyMint · 07/11/2014 07:26

Addle, great to see you and great that you can come on the 5th! Any suggestions for venue? I expect it will be chokka with Christmas parties by then.

CV sympathies on the bathroom front, but did you have to mention TW? That photo is burned onto the backs of my eyes for posterity!

Hope Paris trip is an R+R one, MrsS!

MI, GET ON WITH IT!

I am feeling 195 again todaySad

NUFC69 · 07/11/2014 07:32

CV, that sounds awful - having any work done is invariably stress inducing.

Enjoy your trip to Paris, MrsS. Very envious. I have never been, mad I know. DH used to go a lot for business so I guess it wasn't exciting for him. He does occasionally say we'll go soon....

MI, I sometimes wonder how any of us get away when everything seems to build up before you go. You will breathe a big sigh of relief when you're on the plane.

Still in bed, cat on one side and DH on the other, the room is full of extra furniture from bare one next door. I can only cope with the disorganisation for so long and will be screaming by Monday if we are not straight.

Rosebag · 07/11/2014 08:50

Herbs good luck with all that PGCE work. It will get done, but don't you think you ought to get that foot looked at?
CV thats awful re the bathroom but sadly par for the course these days or so it seems with "having work done" in the house. Breathe, breathe…We once had a new boiler installation by a bloke who was so laid back stoned, actually he had a permanent smile on his face and kept meeting men wearing gold chains in big white cars outside the house. They were all dealing and DH and DFil had to frog march him out of the premises in the end.
Tilly why…is it all the running around to sixth forms? How did it get soooo stressful? I'm sure my parents didn't bother anything like as much. Ive noticed that DS's school which does have a sixth form has stealthily sneaked in a requirement for GCSE As in certain subjects, if you want to do the A level!
I have just watched the new John Lewis advert and am all misty eyed. But it's not a patch on the first one…the one with the snowman and his sweet little snowman girlfriend. What am I like?

Yes Rose, that and all the footy ferrying and kit washing and preparing meals in advance and DD stressing about exams and and and...

Rudy, that sounds like it will be interesting! Linky to the poncho pleaseSmile

Blackduck · 07/11/2014 09:28

Ooh Rudy I like that....it's not bulky at the front.... And it's long too. Might have to look seriously into that.
tilly that's a lot !! you need a spa weekend methinks....
I am not working today. I have taken the advice of crepeys and am having a couple of dinner parties over the next few weeks to build up confidence. The friends coming this Sunday are veggie. I have decided to make...apple and parsnip soup with croutons, a kind of deconstructed mushroom and chestnut pie, with the filling in a cream, garlic sauce, with a puff pastry rectangle balanced on top, and boring but nice, sticky toffee pud for dessert and fresh fruit for light relief. Wibbling a bit. When I tell DM my menus she always says something like " very nice...not gourmet, but nice..." Confused

Blackduck · 07/11/2014 12:16

Ohh Rose can I come ;) I'm a veggie (kind of) and that sounds delish.....

NUFC69 · 07/11/2014 12:20

Well your DM might think that it's not up to scratch for a dinner party, Rose, I do! What a shame that you live at the other end of the country, otherwise I would be there like a shot. I have just made a Chilli beef for tonight for dinner and Mrs S's almond and poppy seed cake for the weekend. I think I got a bit carried away with the poppy seeds. Shock Oh, and any suggestions for a new food processor, mine appears to be on the way out.

The bedroom carpet has been fitted and now makes all the other ones look old and tired. Sad We bought a new bookcase yesterday from Ikea so that needs putting together and then all the furniture wants moving back.

NUFC69 · 07/11/2014 12:21

Yes, I like the poncho too, Rudy.
